Book excerpt: Second-order nonlinear models have been increasingly used in recent years model nonlinear processes in offshore engineering. We develop convenient analytic formulae to predict the nonlinearities in waves and to predict the crest height distribution in a specified wave condition. We apply such models to study the properties of random ocean waves. These include measured waves both in wave tanks and in field. Statistics comparison between model and measurements include: moment comparisons, comparison of distributions of wave elevations, crest heights, wave heights, and conditional distributions of local wave parameters, for example, crest height given wave heights, wave periods given crest heights, among others. We find the second-order model predictions to agree quite closely with the field measurements, while the wave tank statistics seem to be underpredicted by the second-order model. Finally, we solve the inverse problem, in which we identify the underlying first-order wave components, which when run through the second-order wave predictor matches the measured wave histories time point by time point.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on: (1) the physics of the fundamental dynamics of fluids and of semi-immersed Lagrangian solid bodies that are responding to wave-induced loads; (2) the scaling of dimensional equations and boundary value problems in order to determine a small dimensionless parameter ε that may be applied to linearize the equations and the boundary value problems so as to obtain a linear system; (3) the replacement of differential and integral calculus with algebraic equations that require only algebraic substitutions instead of differentiations and integrations; and (4) the importance of comparing numerical and analytical computations with data from laboratories and/or nature.

Book excerpt: Two types of linear random wave simulation methods are investigated; viz., (1) Deterministic Spectral Amplitude (DSA) and (2) Nondeterministic Spectral Amplitude (NSA). These linear simulations are extended to second-order in a perturbation expansion in the frequency domain by utilizing a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). The nonlinear interaction matrix for waves in shallow-, intermediate-, and deep-water is also investigated. In shallow water, the nonlinear interaction matrix is not as well-behaved as it is in intermediate- and deep-water. The nonlinear interaction matrix is symmetrical with respect to its frequency indices. The value of this nonlinear interaction matrix may, therefore, be calculated only from two octants in the w[subscript m]-w[subscript n] in plane. Water particle kinematics are computed from the simulated sea surface by three different Transfer Functions; viz., (1) Linear Frequency Domain (LFD), (2) Hybrid Frequency Domain (HFD), (3) Ncnlinear Frequency Domain (NFD). Wave pressure forces on a circular cylindrical pile are computed at approximately the mid-depth location in the time domain by the Morrison equation using the Dean and Aagaard coefficients. The statistics of these wave pressure forces are derived by the moment generating function approach by assuming that the initial sea surfaces are linear and Gaussian. The statistics of these simulated sea surfaces and wave pressure forces are compared with those recorded during Hurricane Carla (1961) in the Gulf of Mexico. In the sea surface simulation, the NSA method gives better agreement with the statistics from the measured sea surfaces than the DSA method does. However, there is no conclusion that can be drawn out the wave forces which are simulated from only one record (WPII No. 6887).

Book excerpt: This book is an extended and substantially updated edition of the previous book editions published in 1996 and 2013 under the same title. The 3rd edition is a one-volume, modern and comprehensive overview of the current knowledge of regular and random ocean surface waves in deep waters and in coastal zones.Since the previous editions many new theoretical advances have been made in the physical understanding and analytical and numerical treatment of various ocean wave problems. The revisions and supplements demanded by these advances have been substantial, therefore the scope of the book has been extended by adding a new chapter and substantially supplementing others. All chapters of the book have been rewritten to include and describe in detail many new discoveries made since the completion of the previous editions. In this 3rd edition a comprehensive and updated overview of the fundamentals of the regular wave mechanics, as well as the spectral and statistical properties of random waves are given. Except for the updated chapters dedicated to tsunami and extreme waves, a new chapter dealing with other types of impulsive waves starting from rest, are also included. The air-sea interaction processes as well as the last improvements in ocean wave modelling and presently available wave prediction models (WAM, WAVEWATCH III, UMWM, NEMO) are thoroughly discussed and their applications are demonstrated. The review of the present ocean observation methods encompasses the modern sea-truthing, as well as applications of data from presently operating marine satellites. In this revised edition, chapters on the behavior of surface waves in the vegetated environments such as coral reef, mangrove forest, seaweed and seagrass areas are substantially extended and updated to include the last discoveries. The explanations in the book are self-contained and detailed enough to capture the interest of the potential readers and to prompt them to explore the research literature. The list of rapidly growing number of the recent papers on the ocean waves has been extended substantially, up to about 900 titles.

Book excerpt: WAVEMAKER is a FORTRAN program used to simulate random nonGaussian ocean wave histories, to identify the underlying first- and second- order components of user specified waves, or to predict wave time histories at other user specified fixed or moving spatial locations based on the originally simulated or identified wave history. Ocean wave histories are simulated by generating a first-order (Gaussian) wave process with an arbitrary power spectrum, and applying nonlinear corrections based on second-order hydrodynamics. Inputs to the routine include the first-order spectrum, the water depth, and a set of fixed or moving locations in the along-wave direction at which wave elevation histories are desired. It may thus provide useful input to estimate loads on spatially distributed ocean structures and ships. The WAVEMAKER package includes a separate driver program, which facilitates input/output and generates several analytical spectral models. Its input is specified in command-line format, similar to that of the TF-POP program for hydrodynamic post-processing also developed in the Stanford RMS Program. Example problems are included to demonstrate the various uses of WAVEMAKER. In simulation, WAVEMAKER first uses standard frequency domain methods to generate first-order Gaussian histories at each location. For each of these, WAVEMAKER then evaluates the full set of second-order corrections according to hydrodynamic theory. Thus the first-order wave process, with N components at frequencies Wn, gives rise to a total of N2 corrections, spread over all sum frequencies Wn + Wm, and to another N2 corrections over all difference frequencies Wn - Wm. WAVEMAKER also includes the ability to identify the underlying first-order Gaussian history from a given observed time history. This feature is particularly attractive for use in situations where the second-order nonlinearity in the waves is built into the structural response calculations.

Many aspects of our everyday lives and activities may be affected by water waves in some way. Sometimes, the waves can cause disaster. One of the examples was the tsunami that occurred in the Indian Ocean on 26 December 2004. This indicates how important it is for us to fully understand water waves, in particular the very large ones. One way to do so is to perform numerical simulation based on the nonlinear theory. Considerable research advances have been made in this area over the past decade by developing various numerical methods and applying them to emerging problems; however, until now there has been no comprehensive book to reflect these advances. This unique volume aims to bridge this gap. This book contains 18 self-contained chapters written by more than 50 authors from 12 different countries, many of whom are world-leading experts in the field. Each chapter is based mainly on the pioneering work of the authors and their research teams over the past decades. The chapters altogether deal with almost all numerical methods that have been employed so far to simulate nonlinear water waves and cover many important and very interesting applications, such as overturning waves, breaking waves, waves generated by landslides, freak waves, solitary waves, tsunamis, sloshing waves, interaction of extreme waves with beaches, interaction with fixed structures, and interaction with free-response floating structures. Therefore, this book provides a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art research and key achievements in numerical modeling of nonlinear water waves, and serves as a unique reference for postgraduates, researchers and senior engineers working in industry.
