Book excerpt: Effects of residual stresses induced in a three-point bend CTOD specimen on brittle fracture initiation are studied on the basis of the Local Approach. Compressive residual stresses are produced near the crack tip by preloading at room temperature. The material used is a 780 MPa class high-strength steel. Fracture tests are conducted at low temperatures (-75 and -40°C) after preloading. The preloading apparently increases the fracture load and critical CTOD levels at the onset of brittle fracture from the reference levels at monotonic loading, which is due to the compressive residual stress field around the crack tip. The present study employs the Weibull stress fracture criterion to evaluate the brittle fracture resistance of the preloaded specimen. The Weibull stress is calculated by a 3D elastic-plastic FE analysis. Under the assumption that the critical Weibull stress at brittle fracture initiation is a material property independent of preloading, the critical CTOD of the preloaded specimens can be predicted from the fracture test results of monotonically loaded specimens.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A residual stress measurement method has been developed to quantify through-the-thickness residual stresses. Accurate measurement of residual stresses is crucial for many engineering structures. Fabrication processes such as welding and machining generate residual stresses that are difficult to predict. Residual stresses affect the integrity of structures through promoting failures due to brittle fracture, fatigue, stress corrosion cracking, and wear. In this work, the weight function theory of fracture mechanics is used to measure residual stresses. The weight function theory is an important development in computational fracture mechanics. Stress intensity factors for arbitrary stress distribution on the crack faces can be accurately and efficiently computed for predicting crack growth. This paper demonstrates that the weight functions are equally useful in measuring residual stresses. In this method, an artificial crack is created by a thin cut in a structure containing residual stresses. The cut relieves the residual stresses normal to the crack-face and allows the relieved residual stresses to deform the structure. Strain gages placed adjacent to the cut measure the relieved strains corresponding to incrementally increasing depths of the cut. The weight functions of the cracked body relate the measured strains to the residual stresses normal to the cut within the structure. The procedure details, such as numerical integration of the singular functions in applying the weight function method, will be discussed.

Book excerpt: It is re-emphasized here that the effect of residual stress in fatigue is analogous to but not the same as the mean stress effect from applied loads. The inclusion of a residual stress term in the stress intensity factor range of the fatigue crack propagation rate equation permits one to use the residual stress in calculations of fatigue life estimates. Using crack shape factors calculated for given aspect ratios of surface flaws and integrating da/dN, one obtains an equation for the S-N curve which includes the residual stress effect on fatigue performance. This process of calculation reveals that compressive residual stress has a much stronger influence on fatigue life than tensile residual stress does, mainly because the former decreases the stress intensity factor range and increases the critical crack size while the latter only decreases the critical crack size. Numerical solution of an example illustrates an application of these concepts.

Book excerpt: This book presents the proceedings of the International Conference on Residual Stresses 10 and is devoted to the prediction/modelling, evaluation, control, and application of residual stresses in engineering materials. New developments, on stress-measurement techniques, on modelling and prediction of residual stresses and on progress made in the fundamental understanding of the relation between the state of residual stress and the material properties, are highlighted. The proceedings offer an overview of the current understanding of the role of residual stresses in materials used in wide ranging application areas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Residual stresses are a common phenomenon in composite materials. They can either add to or significantly reduce material strength. Because of the increasing demand for high-strength, light-weight materials such as composites and their wide range of applications in the aerospace and automotive industries, in civil infrastructure and in sporting applications, it is critical that the residual stresses of composite materials are understood and measured correctly. The first part of this important book reviews destructive and non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques for measuring residual stresses. Various mathematical (analytical and numerical) methods for calculation of residual stresses in composite materials are also presented. Chapters in the first section of the book discuss the simulated hole drilling method, the slitting/crack compliance method, measuring residual stresses in homogeneous and composite glass materials using photoelastic techniques, and modeling residual stresses in composite materials. The second part of the book discusses residual stresses in polymer matrix, metal-matrix and a range of other types of composites. Moreover, the addition of nanoparticles to the matrix of polymeric composites as a new technique for reduction of residual stresses is discussed. Residual stresses in composite materials provides a comprehensive overview of this important topic, and is an invaluable reference text for both academics and professionals working in the mechanical engineering, civil engineering, aerospace, automotive, marine and sporting industries. Reviews destructive and non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques for measuring residual stresses Discusses residual stresses in polymer matrix, metal-matrix and other types of composite Considers the addition of nanoparticles to the matrix of polymeric composites as a new technique for reduction of residual stresses

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The failure of any welded joint is at best inconvenient and at worst can lead to catastrophic accidents. Fracture and fatigue of welded joints and structures analyses the processes and causes of fracture and fatigue, focusing on how the failure of welded joints and structures can be predicted and minimised in the design process. Part one concentrates on analysing fracture of welded joints and structures, with chapters on constraint-based fracture mechanics for predicting joint failure, fracture assessment methods and the use of fracture mechanics in the fatigue analysis of welded joints. In part two, the emphasis shifts to fatigue, and chapters focus on a variety of aspects of fatigue analysis including assessment of local stresses in welded joints, fatigue design rules for welded structures, k-nodes for offshore structures and modelling residual stresses in predicting the service life of structures. With its distinguished editor and international team of contributors, Fracture and fatigue of welded joints and structures is an essential reference for mechanical, structural and welding engineers, as well as those in the academic sector with a research interest in the field. Analyses the processes and causes of fracture and fatigue, focusing predicting and minimising the failure of welded joints in the design process Assesses the fracture of welded joints and structure featuring constraint-based fracture mechanics for predicting joint failure Explores specific considerations in fatigue analysis including the assessment of local stresses in welded joints and fatigue design rules for welded structures
