Book excerpt: "This learning analytics study looked at the various student characteristics of all on-campus students who were enrolled in 100 and 200 level courses that were offered in both online and face-to-face formats during a two-year period. There is a perception that online education is either not as successful as face-to-face instruction, or it is more difficult for students. The results of this study show this is not the case. The goal of this study was to complete an in-depth analysis of student profiles addressing a variety of demographic categories as well as several academic and course related variables to reveal any patterns for student success in either online or face-to-face courses as measured by final grade. There were large enough differences within different demographic and academic categories to be considered significant for the study population, but overwhelmingly, the most significant predictor of success was found to be past educational success, as reflected in a student's cumulative grade point average. Further analysis was completed on students who declared high school credit as their primary major based on significantly different levels of success. These students were concurrent enrollment students or those who completed college courses for both high school and university credit. Since most of these students were new to the university, they did not have a cumulative GPA, so other predictive factors were explored. The study concludes with recommendations for action based on the logistic regression prediction tool that resulted from the data analysis."--Boise State University ScholarWorks.

Studies conducted by various researchers that have focused on the K-12 population of online learners demonstrate that certain online learner characteristics and online learning environment characteristics may impact the likelihood of students passing or failing online courses. Research has produced models that predict online course success with measurable degrees of accuracy. This descriptive study examines characteristics of students enrolled in online high school courses provided by a virtual learning program administered by a single Virginia public school district. The study determined that students' prior academic success; confidence in their technology skills and access to technology; confidence in their ability to achieve; and strong beliefs in their organizational skills proved to have a significant statistical relationship with online course success. The study developed a model with these factors that predicted success in online courses with a high degree of accuracy and predicted failure with a moderate degree of accuracy.The study has policy implications for public school leaders in Virginia as they implement recent state legislation requiring students to successfully complete a virtual course to graduate from public high school. The study indicates that additional research is warranted to further delineate learner and learning environment characteristics producing a model that more accurately predicts failure in online courses. Additional research is warranted with larger samples from single district virtual programs.

Digital textbooks are becoming more popular, and textbook publishers are shifting more of their efforts to creating digital content. This shift creates new data points that have the potential to show how students are engaging with course material. The purpose of this correlational study is to determine if digital textbook usage data, pages read, number of days, reading sessions, highlights, bookmarks, notes, searches, downloads and prints can predict student success. This study used a multiple regression to determine if digital textbook usage data is a predictor of course or quiz success in five online undergraduate courses at a private liberal arts university. The analysis used digital textbook data from VitalSource and consisted of 1,602 students that were enrolled in an eight-week online course at a private liberal arts university. The analysis showed that there is a significant relationship between digital textbook usage data and total points earned and average quiz grade. This study contributes to the limited knowledge on digital textbook analytics and provides valuable insight into how students engage with digital textbooks in online courses.

The researcher employed logistic regression analysis to determine if using online tutoring increased the students’ probability for course success. Further, the researcher also studied the amount of usage to understand if greater usage increased the probability of course success. Findings from this study indicated that, for most courses studied, participation in online tutoring was associated with a greater likelihood of course success. However, the amount of tutoring received did not typically increase the probability of course success.

Prediction markets have been introduced as a viable alternative. Utilizing inputs from various participants in game-like environments, they have been shown to produce accurate results by combining dispersed knowledge via market-based aggregation mechanisms. While most previous studies use employees or experts as a sample, we test whether online consumer communities can be used to predict the sale of new skis via prediction markets. Sixty-two users took part in the study. The prediction market was open for 12 days before the main skiing season 2010/2011 began. The outcomes of the prediction markets were compared with the actual sales numbers provided by the ski producers. The mean average errors were between 2.74% and 9.09% in the four markets. Overall, it can be concluded that the prediction markets based on consumer communities produce accurate results.

To mitigate or better understand attrition, different researchers have developed survey tools in order to try to predict student outcomes in the virtual setting. Roblyer and Marshall first developed The Educational Success Prediction Instrument (ESPRI) in 2002 and then updated it in 2008 (ESPRI-V2). This particular study built off of their work but adapted the approach to examine predictive instrumentation with a new survey tool using Carol Dweck’s research in the growth mindset. For this study, items on the Predictive Assessment for Virtual Education (PAVE) survey tool ask for ratings on a 7-point Lickert scale. Survey items followed incremental theory and examined growth and mastery oriented mindsets. Responses to the PAVE survey were examined using multiple regression analysis. Item weights were then compared to student outcomes, which were reported in the form of course grades and grade point average. Results were mixed as the data were limited by the students willing to respond to the survey; the self-selected sample resulted in most students having perfect grades. Nonetheless, there were a few response items, particularly the scenario item, which had statistical significance and could support a survey tool to examine online learning and incremental and the growth mindset construct. In the end, just as is the case with online learning as a whole, the survey tool has promise, but it does need more work.
