Book Synopsis Forensic Analytical Methods by : Thiago R L C Paixão
Download or read book Forensic Analytical Methods written by Thiago R L C Paixão and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2019-08-13 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forensic analysis relates to the development of analytical methods from laboratory applications to in-field and in situ applications to resolve criminal cases. There has been a rapid expansion in the past few years in this area, which has led to an increase in the output of literature. This is the first book that brings together the understanding of the analytical techniques and how these influence the outcome of a forensic investigation. Starting with a brief introduction of the chemical analysis for forensic application, some forensic sampling and sample preparation, the book then describes techniques used in forensic chemical sensing in order to solve crimes. The techniques describe current forensic science practices in analytical chemistry and specifically the development of portable detectors to guide the authorities in the field. The book provides an excellent combination of current issues in forensic analytical methods for the graduates and professionals. It will cover the essential principles for students and directly relate the techniques to applications in real situations.

Book Synopsis Reducing the Threat of Improvised Explosive Device Attacks by Restricting Access to Explosive Precursor Chemicals by : National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
Download or read book Reducing the Threat of Improvised Explosive Device Attacks by Restricting Access to Explosive Precursor Chemicals written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2018-04-19 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Improvised explosive devices (IEDs) are a type of unconventional explosive weapon that can be deployed in a variety of ways, and can cause loss of life, injury, and property damage in both military and civilian environments. Terrorists, violent extremists, and criminals often choose IEDs because the ingredients, components, and instructions required to make IEDs are highly accessible. In many cases, precursor chemicals enable this criminal use of IEDs because they are used in the manufacture of homemade explosives (HMEs), which are often used as a component of IEDs. Many precursor chemicals are frequently used in industrial manufacturing and may be available as commercial products for personal use. Guides for making HMEs and instructions for constructing IEDs are widely available and can be easily found on the internet. Other countries restrict access to precursor chemicals in an effort to reduce the opportunity for HMEs to be used in IEDs. Although IED attacks have been less frequent in the United States than in other countries, IEDs remain a persistent domestic threat. Restricting access to precursor chemicals might contribute to reducing the threat of IED attacks and in turn prevent potentially devastating bombings, save lives, and reduce financial impacts. Reducing the Threat of Improvised Explosive Device Attacks by Restricting Access to Explosive Precursor Chemicals prioritizes precursor chemicals that can be used to make HMEs and analyzes the movement of those chemicals through United States commercial supply chains and identifies potential vulnerabilities. This report examines current United States and international regulation of the chemicals, and compares the economic, security, and other tradeoffs among potential control strategies.
Book Synopsis Disease Control Priorities, Third Edition (Volume 4) by : Vikram Patel
Download or read book Disease Control Priorities, Third Edition (Volume 4) written by Vikram Patel and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2016-03-10 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mental, neurological, and substance use disorders are common, highly disabling, and associated with significant premature mortality. The impact of these disorders on the social and economic well-being of individuals, families, and societies is large, growing, and underestimated. Despite this burden, these disorders have been systematically neglected, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, with pitifully small contributions to scaling up cost-effective prevention and treatment strategies. Systematically compiling the substantial existing knowledge to address this inequity is the central goal of this volume. This evidence-base can help policy makers in resource-constrained settings as they prioritize programs and interventions to address these disorders.

This book was released on 2016 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The WHO Expert Committee on Drug Dependence (ECDD) is responsible for assessing psychoactive substances for possible control under the international drug control conventions. The ECDD reviews the therapeutic usefulness, the liability for abuse and dependence, and the public health and social harm potential of each substance under review. After the ECDD advises the Director-General of WHO as to whether to schedule or to amend the scheduling status of a substance, the Director-General will, as appropriate, communicate the recommendations to the United Nations Secretary-General. The Secretary-General communicates the advice to the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND), as appropriate. This report presents the recommendations of the thirty-seventh meeting of the WHO Expert Committee on Drug Dependence. The report summarizes the review of nine substances and the ECDD's recommendations for the scheduling of seven substances. The report also provides updates on ketamine and cannabis, as requested by resolutions of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs. It contains updates on the work of international bodies concerned with controlled substances, as well as summaries of the follow-up discussions on recommendations made at the previous ECDD meeting, and on the discussions on criteria for assessing new psychoactive substances and on terminology.

Download or read book WHO Expert Committee on Drug Dependence written by World Health Organization and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2024-04-19 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Forty-sixth Meeting of the World Health Organisation (WHO)’s Expert Committee on Drug Dependence (ECDD) was convened from 16 to 19 October 2023 and was coordinated from the WHO headquarters in Geneva. The Forty-sixth WHO ECDD critically reviewed six new psychoactive substances: including two benzodiazepines (bromazolam, flubromazepam), one novel synthetic opioid (butonitazene), two cathinones/stimulants (3-CMC, dipentylone) and one dissociative-type substance (2-fluorodeschloroketamine). A critical review to consider international scheduling measures was undertaken for each substance so that the Expert Committee could consider whether information about these substances may justify the scheduling or a change in scheduling of a substance in the 1961 or 1971 Conventions. In addition, the Forty-sixth ECDD carried out a pre-review of nitrous oxide and carisoprodol to consider whether current information justified a critical review. This report summarizes the findings of the forty-sixth ECDD meeting.
Book Synopsis Anti-Money Laundering and the Law by : Engin Erken
Download or read book Anti-Money Laundering and the Law written by Engin Erken and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-08-27 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a distinctive and critical analysis of the anti-money laundering (AML) measures that have been put in place in Türkiye and the United Kingdom. The work presents a comparative analysis of if, and to what extent, the AML regimes in these jurisdictions are fit for purpose in countering some of the most pressing predicate crimes. It investigates the AML regimes relating to tackling the riskiest/most prevalent predicate crimes, that is, drug trafficking and tax crimes, thereby filling a significant gap within the current literature. The study provides insights into the effectiveness and efficiency of national AML frameworks adopted by Türkiye and the UK in addressing distinct crimes, thereby identifying essential features of an optimum AML ecosystem that could effectively address predicate crimes regardless of their nature. This novel approach offers a detailed analysis of the law in books and law in practice elements of the AML regimes in Türkiye and the United Kingdom which will set the tone for conducting similar studies in other jurisdictions. The book will be of interest to academics, researchers and policy-makers working in the areas of Financial Crime, Law Enforcement and Comparative Law.
