Book excerpt: "The nuclear mass is a fundamental property of a nucleus because it defines the binding energy which represents the sum of all internal interactions. Masses provide insight into nuclear structure effects and are influential in describing heavy element nucleosynthesis via the rapid neutron-capture (??) process. More nuclear data, including masses, on the neutron-rich side of stability is needed to improve upon the current understanding of the ?? process. The Canadian Penning Trap (CPT) mass spectrometer is located at the CARIBU facility where intense beams of neutron-rich nuclei are created. To take advantage of the unique beams available at CARIBU an upgrade to the phase-imaging ion-cyclotron-resonance (PI-ICR) mass measurement technique at the CPT has been completed, vastly improving the experimental sensitivity. Compared to the previous system this new technique is faster, more efficient, and offers improved mass resolution and higher mass precision. In this thesis the implementation of PI-ICR at the CPT is detailed alongside a thorough study of the associated systematic effects. A total of 54 neutron-rich nuclear masses are presented ranging between mass numbers of ?? = 104-168, including 18 which have been measured for the first time and 29 where a reduction in the mass uncertainty has been made. The majority of the new measurements are of rare-earth elements near ?? = 100. Trends along several isotopic chains are discussed and the impact of these measurements in explaining a possible formation mechanism of the rare-earth elemental abundance peak during the ?? process is given." --

Book excerpt: "The masses of 15 neutron-rich nuclei were measured using the Canadian Penning Trap mass spectrometer (CPT) located at the Californium Rare Isotope Breeder Upgrade (CARIBU) facility at Argonne National Laboratory to an average mass precision of [delta][mu/[mu][approximately equals] 10−7. This includes masses of five previously unmeasured ground-state nuclei and one of a newly resolved isomer. Generally good agreement is reached when comparing the data set in this thesis with previously established mass measurements. CARIBU provides neutron-rich radioactive beams in the vicinity of A=105 and A=140, originating from the spontaneous fission of 252Cf. In this thesis, isotopes with fission branches as low as 3.3E-4 products per 100 decays (150Ba) and half-lifes as low as 222 ms (142I) have been reached. \ This thesis provides a thorough discussion of the precision mass measurement process, from ion production at CARIBU, to detection at the CPT where a time-of-flight-ion cyclotron resonance (ToF-ICR) technique is employed to determine the cyclotron frequencies of trapped ion species. Limitations of the measurement technique with respect to the current CPT system at CARIBU are discussed, and a new phase-imaging-ion cyclotron resonance (PI-ICR) procedure is introduced." --

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extensive new mass measurement capabilities have evolved with the development of recoil spectrometers. In the Z = 3 to 9 neutron-rich region alone, 12 neutron-rich nuclei have been determined for the first time by the fast-recoil direct mass measurement method. A recent experiment using the TOFI spectrometer illustrates this technique. A systematic investigation of nuclei that lie along or near the neutron-drip line has provided a valuable first glimpse into the nuclear structure of such nuclei. No evidence for a large single-particle energy gap at N = 14 is observed; however, a change in the two-neutron separation model calculations, and is interpreted in terms of the smaller 1s12 - 1s12 interaction compared to that of the 0d52 - 0d52 neutron-neutron interaction. 18 refs., 7 figs., 1 tab.

Book excerpt: This experiment has demonstrated that direct mass measurements can be performed (albeit of low precision in this first attempt) using the M proportional to ET2 method. This technique has the advantage that many particle-bound nuclei, produced in fragmentation reactions can be measured simultaneously, independent of their N or Z. The main disadvantage of this approach is that both energy and time-of-flight must be measured precisely on an absolute scale. Although some mass walk with N and Z was observed in this experiment, these uncertainties were largely removed by extrapolating the smooth dependence observed for known nuclei which lie closer to the valley of .beta.-stability. Mass measurements for several neutron-rich light nuclei ranging from 17C to 26Ne have been performed. In all cases these measurements agree with the latest mass compilation of Wapstra and Audi. The masses of 2°N and 24F have been determined for the first time.

Book excerpt: This project was directed toward the study of neutron-rich nuclei using the experimental facilities at LAMPF, which is a part of LANL. The principal results of the investigation include the discovery of many new isotopes along with a measurement of their masses and in particular those nuclides in the Z = 7--19 and 14 --26 regions of the chart of the nuclides. Thirty-four new nuclides were detected and studied with their masses being measured with relatively high accuracy, and an additional twenty-six that were previously known and measured were remeasured to an improved accuracy. Besides providing new information about the mass surface in new and extended redons of the chart of the nuclides, this investigation enabled properties and previously unknown structure of some of the nuclei to be determined such as nuclear deformation among some of the nuclides. Also a study of the neutron pairing gaps and the proton pairing gaps among these nuclides was made. Other developments also achieved included instrument (TOFI) improvements and upgrades and theoretical investigations into the masses of the hadrons.

Book excerpt: The Sixth International Conference on Atomic Masses was held in East Lansing, Michigan, Sept. 18-21, 1979. The conference was initiated, organized, and sponsored by the Commission on Atomic Masses and Fundamental Constants of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics. The members of the conference committee are listed below: W. Benenson, Chairman Michigan State University R. C. Barber University of-Manitoba E. R. Cohen Rockwell International Institute of Chemical Physics, V. I. Goldanskii Moscow J. C. Hardy Chalk River, Canada W. H. Johnson University of Minnesota E. Kashy Michigan State University Orsay, France R. Klapisch J. A. Nolen, Jr. Michigan State University R. G. H. Robertson Michigan State University E. Roeckl G. S. I. , Darmstadt B. N. Taylor National Bureau of Standards O. Schult IKF, Julich A. H. Wapstra IFO, Amsterdam N. Zeldes Racah Institute, Jerusalem The conference was a little different from the preceding one (in Paris, 1975) in that the fundamental constant aspects were limited to those directly related to atomic masses. The gap is to be filled by the second International Conference on Precision Measurement and Fundamental Constants which is now scheduled for June 1981 in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Only one of the seven sessions in this conference was devoted to fundamental constant determina tions. The conference was very strongly supported by the Department of Energy, the National Science Foundation, and the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents two significant results in the field of precision measurements in low-energy nuclear physics. Firstly, it presents a precise half-life determination of 11C, leading to the most precise ft-value for a beta decay transition between mirror nuclides, an important advance in the testing of the electroweak sector of the Standard Model. Secondly, it describes a high-precision mass measurement of 56Cu, a critical nucleus for determining the path of the astrophysical rapid-proton capture process, performed by the author using the LEBIT Penning trap at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory. This new measurement resolves discrepancies in previously-reported calculated mass excesses. In addition, the thesis also presents the construction and testing of a radio-frequency quadrupole cooler and buncher that will be part of the future N = 126 factory at Argonne National Laboratory aimed at producing nuclei of interest for the astrophysical rapid-neutron capture process for the first time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A small revolution in our ability to perform mass measurements of light-mass, neutron-rich nuclei has occurred during the last five years with the extension of the direct, total mass measurement method to fast recoiling nuclei. To date the work of two groups, one using the SPEG spectrometer at GANIL and the other using the TOFI spectrometer at LAMPF, has yielded over 85 mass measurements of which 62 had not been reported previously. Extending from the neutron-halo nucleus 11Li up to 66Fe, a region relevant to the astrophysical r-process, these measurements have provided a valuable first glimpse into the interesting nuclear structure present in many of these exotic nuclei. Herein we highlight the nuclear structure insight which as been gained from these measurements, especially that learned from a comparison to recent shell model calculations. Attention is given to: (1) the binding of loosely-bound neutron halo nuclei; (2) the N=14--16 region in the neutron-rich isotopes of O, F, and Ne where the strong two-body interaction plays an important role; (3) the deformed intruder state region around 31Na of long standing interest; (4) the neutron-rich isotopes of sulfur and chlorine; and (5) the question of the isospin dependence (or independence) of neutron and proton pairing energies in the fp shell. Only the briefest account of this work can be given here; emphasis is placed on the most recent results. 24 refs., 3 figs.
