Book excerpt: In an effort to estimate precise satellite ephemeris in real-time on board a satellite, the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) created the GPS Enhanced Orbit Determination Experiment (GEODE) flight navigation software. This dissertation offers alternative methods and improvements to GEODE to increase on board autonomy and real-time total position accuracy and precision without increasing computational burden. First, GEODE is modified to include a Gravity Acceleration Approximation Function (GAAF) to replace the traditional spherical harmonic representation of the gravity field. Next, an ionospheric correction method called Differenced Range Versus Integrated Doppler (DRVID) is applied to correct for ionospheric errors in the GPS measurements used in GEODE. Then, Dynamic Model Compensation (DMC) is added to estimate unmodeled and/or mismodeled forces in the dynamic model and to provide an alternative process noise variance-covariance formulation. Finally, a Genetic Algorithm (GA) is implemented in the form of Genetic Model Compensation (GMC) to optimize DMC forcing noise parameters. Application of GAAF, DRVID an(i DMC improved GEODE's position estimates by 28.3% when applied to GPS/MET data collected in the presence of Selective Availability (SA), 17.5% when SA is removed from the GPS/MET data and 10.8% on SA free TOPEX data. Position estimates with RSS errors below 1 meter are now achieved using SA free TOPEX data. DRVID causes an increase in computational burden while GAAF and DMC reduce computational burden. The net effect of applying GAAF, DRVID and DMC is an improvement in GEODE's accuracy/precision without an increase in computational burden.

Book excerpt: These proceedings include most of the papers presented at the lAG Sympo sium GPS Trends in Precise Terrestrial, Airborne, and Spacebome Appli cations held in July 1995 during the XXI-th IUGG General Assembly in Boulder, Colorado. The symposium was jointly organized by the lAG and the International Union of Surveys and Mapping (IUSM). The symposium was divided into four sessions, namely (1) The International GPS Service for Geodynamics (IGS) and other Permanent Networks, (2) Spaceborne Applications of the GPS, (3) Kinematic Applications of the GPS, and (4) The GPS and its Relations to Geophysics. The main purpose was to give an overview of the state of the art in 1995 of the applications of the GPS to geodynamics, geodesy, surveying, and navi gation. The call for papers generated a flood of originally more than 70 abstracts; quite a few could be redirected to other symposia, but still 56 papers found their way into these proceedings. We thus conclude that the volume gives a rather complete overview of GPS Trends in Precise Terrestrial, Airborne, and Spacebome Applications in the year 1995.

Book excerpt: Satellite tracking techniques have traditionally been limited to ground-based stations that measure a satellite's range, azimuth, elevation and range rate, The advent of high accuracy Global Positioning System (GPS) navigation techniques, however, offers alternative methods. This thesis investigates the use of GPS navigation solutions (earth-centered, earth-fixed position and velocity information) as an observation source in a weighted least- squares orbit determination process. Such an orbit determination scheme could limit dependence upon the costly and complex ground-based tracking facilities for low and medium earth orbit satellites, while providing real-time information for on-board instrumentation and mission management. This investigation included modification of the Draper Laboratory version of the Goddard Trajectory Determination System (Draper R&D GTDS) to include coordinate systems compatible with the Fifth Fundamental Catalogue (FK5) and an inertial true equator and equinox of date frame. Solid earth tide modeling was introduced for numerical integration techniques and refined for semianalytic methods. The accuracy of the navigation solution-derived orbits (and the ability of Draper R&D GTDS to model spacecraft motion) is determined for the Ocean Topography Experiment (TOPEX), Technology for Autonomous Operational Survivability (TAOS), and Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) through comparison to high quality, independently generated 'truth' solutions (Precise Orbit Ephemerides, or POEs).

Book excerpt: Wide area differential GPS (WADGPS) satellite-based augmentation system (SBAS) services, such as the Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) in U.S.A., provide satellite orbit and clock corrections and ionospheric delay corrections. Although their corrections are optimized for use with GPS single-frequency pseudorange measurements, the satellite orbit and clock corrections can be used to improve GPS positioning accuracy for dual-frequency users. The main objective of the research described in this dissertation is the design of a GPS dual-frequency data processing technique capable of producing high-accuracy point positioning results with WADGPS corrections. In this research, three major issues were identified as the satellite clock referencing issue, the resolution of the fast clock correction issue and the residual orbit and clock issue. By considering that the ways to handle the identified issues in a precise point positioning (PPP) process are different for different position estimator and different basis observables, a SBAS PPP with a weighted least-squares approach using a carefully designed sequential forward carrier-phase smoother and a SBAS PPP with sequential least-squares approach using un-differenced dual-frequency code and carrier-phase measurements have been developed. To account for the satellite clock referencing issue, the effects of the satellite instrumental biases have been precisely investigated and the observation equations for the different observables assuming the source of corrections is WADGPS have been developed. To account for the low resolutions of WAAS (or/and any SBAS corrections which follows the RTCA standard [2001]) fast clock corrections, a weighted moving average filter was adopted and a proper smoothing factor has been carefully determined. Finally, to take into account the residual orbit and clock errors, a varying carrier-phase ambiguity concept has been applied rather than assuming the ambiguity is constant over time. This method is only applicable for the SBAS PPP with a sequential least-squares method which has an ambiguity parameter for each satellite in the observation model. Results determined via developed software indicate a few decimeter-level of positioning accuracy for both developed PPP algorithms with (real-time) WADGPS orbit and clock corrections in kinematic mode could be attainable. Although a few decimeter-level of positioning accuracy are slightly less accurate than that of using precise orbit and clock products, it will give more flexibility and chances to choose a proper positioning technique, which can meet the majority of user expectations and their application needs. Furthermore, the algorithms developed in this research can be used for seamless PPP solutions with future SBAS corrections when all the planned SBASs are in operation.

Book excerpt: The Global Positioning System (GPS) is likely to become a powerful means in precise orbit determination (POD) of low-orbiting Earth satellites as long as it can fully cover the satellites. With its continuous tracking and coverage capabilities, this system can realize not only conventional dynamic precise orbit determination, but kinematic orbit determination as well. Technically, by smoothing the pseudo-range measurement values derived from at least four GPS satellites by using the carrier wave measurement values, the geocentric position at the phase center of the antenna and the clock correction values of the user satellites can be determined. Therefore, the foregoing technology does not require a dynamic model to impose a force on a user satellite. The kinematic method is extremely sensitive to the effects from measurement models, such as the GPS sidereal error (either as a given or to be solved), signal multipath, receiver noise, etc. On the other hand, however, the dynamic method also suffers from effects caused by parameter errors and/or imperfections of the force model. With this scenario, a hybred arrangement was proposed designed for weighting the kinematic and dynamic algorithms by compensating for the process noise. Our project was focused on the investigating these orbit determination methods through a simulation and covariance analysis with several dynamic and measurement error models. The orbital uncertainty generated by these models was found to be roughly equivalent to the sidereal error estimated in processing actual GPS data. In this case, the covariance analysis, when adjusted, was able to reflect these errors and to reveal the characteristics of various filtering techniques.
