A condição de que os saberes docentes não são simplesmente transmitidos, por isso a formação inicial não dá conta de suprir todas as necessidades dos profissionais é demonstrada na obra, a qual mantém a organização em três capítulos. Desse modo, os pontos específicos da docência, a fim de diferenciá-la das demais ocupações, e também as questões referentes à profissionalização da docência estão presentes no primeiro capítulo. No segundo capítulo, a texto traz tipologias de saberes docentes, utilizando como pressupostos teóricos os estudos na perspectiva de Tardif (2002), Gauthier et al. (2006) e Shulman (2005). O conceito de desenvolvimento profissional do professor e os elementos implícitos nesse processo compõem o referido capítulo. Assim, a análise dos dados coletados nas instituições de ensino é apresentada no capítulo seguinte da pesquisa e nele estão presentes três categorias. Estas, por sua vez, abrangem as fontes de aprendizagem como forma de originar os saberes docentes; os processos formativos, à medida que possibilitam o desenvolvimento dos saberes do professor; e, como outra categoria, a prática pedagógica na qual há a mobilização dos saberes.
