Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prairie Farming in America: With Notes by the Way on Canada and the United States The present position of the agricultural body in the United Kingdom is interesting and peculiar. The landowner and the agricultural laborer are both profiting by the same cause, a limited supply of the commodity in which they deal. So long as this country continues to prosper, the value of land must increase, for there can be no increase of the land itself. But the demand for labour varies, and the supply is subject to causes which render it uncertain. While, so long as the present system of taxation continues, there must be a continued rise in the value of land, there appears to me no equal certainty of a progressive advance in the rate of wages. Book Synopsis Prairie Patrimony by : Sonya Salamon
Download or read book Prairie Patrimony written by Sonya Salamon and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 1995 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prairie Patrimony consolidates, refines, advances and grounds recent scholarship that challenges familiar platitudes about family farming and rural life in the United States. . . . No one should doubt the great contribution that Salamon has made to our understanding of American rural life. American Studies [Salamon's] approach yields a depth of information about farming culture not usually found in the literature on rural America. Choice Takes the reader on a cultural tour of a cherished American institution and landscape--midwestern farm families and their farms. With perceptive attention to detail and knowledge borne of first-hand study over many years, [Salamon] skillfully reveals the pervasive imprint of ethnicity. . . . Prairie Patrimony represents one of those rare studies that enrich our social vision and understanding in extraordinary ways. Glen H. Elder, Jr., University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Salamon's book is a remarkable contribution to the study of agriculture and culture, and its cross-disciplinary approach will engage scholars in many areas. For historians, it is a splendid illustration that different behaviors between American and immigrant farmers, planted over a century ago in the Middle West, have endured to the present. Book Synopsis Change in Agriculture by : Clarence H. Danhof
Download or read book Change in Agriculture written by Clarence H. Danhof and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1969 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American agriculture changed radically between 1820 and 1870. In turning slowly from subsistence to commercial farming, farmers on the average doubled the portion of their production places on the market, and thereby laid the foundations for today's highly productive agricultural industry. But the modern system was by no means inevitable. It evolved slowly through an intricate process in which innovative and imitative entrepreneurs were the key instruments.
