Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Zoology Ideas differ considerably as to what constitutes the best course in zoology for secondary schools, but we cannot be far wrong if we succeed in combining a general knowledge of animals and of zoological principles with a discussion of the relations of animals to man, in such a way as to interest the students. The constant references to the relations of animals to their environ ment and the selection of common animals, especially those of economic importance, for illustrative purposes tend to stimulate the natural interest of boys and girls in animal life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Zoology: An Elementary d104-Book Treating of the Structure, Life, History, and Relations of Animals The subject matter has been so treated as to adapt the book to schools giving either a half or whole year to the study of zoology. Those preferring it can begin the study with the Protozoa and proceed to the higher forms, instead of=following the order given in the text, as the chapters in Parts I and II are so written as to be largely independent of each other. Teachers having only a half year for Zoology will perhaps find it wise to omit certain chapters in order that the time which ought to be spent in studying the animals shall not be devoted to the study of the book. It is not expected that most schools will be able to give careful attention to all the subjects treated, but the numerous forms and phases of animal life have been presented in order to allow some choice on the part of the teacher desiring to emphasize special features of zoological study. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Course of Practical Zoology IN the early part of 1897, my brother and I had arranged to collaborate in writing a practical text-book of Elementary Zoology, adapted more particularly to the requirements of Students pursuing courses in the subject as laid down by various examining bodies. We had, however, only reached the stage of deciding on a general plan at the time of my brother's death in November of the same year. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Course in Practical Zoölogy The principal change from the earlier edition consists in the addition of directions for field study and for the laboratory study of the live animals. In the nature of the work these directions must be somewhat general, and Should be modified by the teacher to suit local conditions and the requirements of the class. Because of the fact that conditions greatly vary in different localities, it is not to be supposed that each teacher can accomplish all the work here outlined. It is hoped that there is variety enough to suit most localities. Other types may often serve the purpose better than these here presented. The work must also be adapted to the age and experience of the students and to the time allotted to the subject. The author's reasons for the order of study here presented are given in the preface of the descriptive part of the book. For convenience, the practical part follows the descriptive text, but, of course, the actual study of the types Should precede any assigned lesson or reading in reference books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Zoology: Descriptive and Practical, Descriptive They should be studied before the season Of frosts. On the other hand, fishes can as well, or better, be studied later. Since the natural history point of view is prominent, the general principle regulating the order of study should be, follow the season. The birds, too, should receive attention during the first part of the term, for many of them migrate early. It is not necessary, nor always desirable, to complete the study of one group before beginning another. Two lines of work can profitably be pursued on alternate days or weeks. For fall work, the order here given has been found satisfactory. But circumstances call for considerable variation; it is not necessary ta follow any given order with slavish fidelity. If the work begins in th spring, the teacher may prefer to begin with the crayfish, clam, fish, or frog. There are some advantages in beginning with the lowest animals and studying them in the ascending order. This gives the clearest idea Of the natural sequence Of the animal kingdom. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Zoology: With Directions for Practical Work (Invertebrates) IT is desirable, perhaps, to give some reason for adding another book on Natural History to the many that already exist, and to indicate in what way the book is intended to be used. The danger of the multiplication of small text - books is that they may conceivably be used in place of that firsthand investigation which must form the basis of all scientific work nevertheless, so long as the time allotted to Natural History is as limited as it is in the ordinary curriculum of school and college in this country, it is necessary to use to the best advantage the hours which teacher and pupils spend together, and I suggest that this time can at first be most profitably spent in practical work, during which the teacher directs and supplements the observations of the class, leading his pupils to reason about the facts they observe, and to record them by means of clear accurate drawings with brief explanatory notes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Directions for Laboratory and Field Work in Zoology: For Use in Connection With Practical Zoology There are two chief reasons for separating the labora tory exercises from the textbook: (1) the pupils should not be tempted to depend upon their textbook to answer the questions that are asked in the laboratory, but should make original observations and then arrive at their own conclusions; and (2) teachers do not as a rule agree as to the order of the exercises or their contents, hence it is better to have the laboratory guide separated from the textbook in such a way as to enable the user to modify the order of procedure with the least possible confusion. The great amount of material available for laboratory study has of course necessitated a selection of subjects. The animals included have been chosen with the idea of combining interest with profit so that the pupil may be come acquainted with the common animals which he encounters more or less constantly in his daily life as well as with those that are of particular economic importance. Zoological principles, however, have not been slighted, but have been introduced in their appropriate positions. Many of the animals that are important economically are very difficult to obtain, and directions for the study of these have, of course, been omitted. These animals should, however, be demonstrated to the students when ever possible. A list of species suitable for laboratory study may be compiled from the textbook, and specimens may be obtained from the dealers whose names appear in the appended list. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Zoology: Practical, Systematic and Comparative; Being a Revision and Rearrangement of Orton's Comparative Zoology The first thing to be determined about a new specimen is not its name but its most prominent character. Until you know an animal, care not for its name: agassiz. The great benefit which a scientific education bestows, whether as training or as knowledge, is dependent upon the extent to which the mind of the student is brought into immediate contact with facts - upon the degree to which he learns the' habit of appealing directly to Nature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Steps to Zoology All these animals it is the business of the zoologist to divide into groups, so that those may be placed together which are alike, and those may be separated, more or less remotely, which are different. The task is one that no single individual could accomplish by his own efforts 3 but it has been done by the combined and successive labours of many. In this way the entire animal kingdom has been divided into a number of great groups, distinguished from one another by peculiarities of structure. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Text Book of Vertebrate Zoology Within recent years the laboratory method has become the basis of instruction in every science. The student is expected to find out a certain number of fundamental facts directly from nature, but while this has in itself great value as a training in observation, the fullest benefit of the study is not obtained unless there be a comprehension of the bearings of the facts observed. Observation and uncorrellated facts do not make a science. Attention can be directed to the relations and significance of the facts ascertained in the laboratory by means of lectures, but a somewhat extended experience has shown that the average student needs something more than his lecture notes, at least when beginning any subject. The present volume is intended to supplement both lectures and laboratory work, and to place in concise form the more important facts and generalizations concerning the vertebrates. It is also hoped that it may have some value for students of medicine in explaining many peculiarities of the structure of man which seem meaningless unless viewed in the light of comparative morphology. When once their meaning is comprehended it is easy to remember them. The first part of the volume is devoted to an outline of the morphology of vertebrates based upon embryology. This treatment has been adopted, since the author believes that in this way the bearings of the facts can be most clearly shown and most easily remembered. The remainder of the volume presents an outline of the classification of vertebrates, a subject which, in recent years, has been too much ignored in college work. Here the fossils are included as well as the recent forms, since the existing fauna must be studied in the light of the past. Numerous generic names have been mentioned without characterization; they have been inserted in order that the student may be able to ascertain the relationships of the forms he may find mentioned in collateral reading. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Principles Zoology But meanwhile the subject of Zoology has widened 1, for, apart from its relations to man, Zoology has to explain the organization of animals and their relations to one another. This is a rich field for scientific activity; its enormous range is a consequence, on the one hand, of the well-nigh exhaustless variety of animal organization, and, on the other hand, of the different points of view from which the zoologist enters upon the solution of his problem.
