Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While preparing the first edition of this textbook I attended an extension short course on writing agricultural publications. The message I remember was "select your audience and write to it. " There has never been any doubt about the audience for which this textbook was written, the introductory course in crop breeding. In addition, it has become a widely used reference for the graduate plant-breeding student and the practicing plant breeder. In its prepa ration, particular attention has been given to advances in plant-breeding theo ry and their utility in plant-breeding practice. The blend of the theoretical with the practical has set this book apart from other plant-breeding textbooks. The basic structure and the objectives of the earlier editions remain un changed. These objectives are (1) to review essential features of plant re production, Mendelian genetic principles, and related genetic developments applicable in plant-breeding practice; (2) to describe and evaluate established and new plant-breeding procedures and techniques, and (3) to discuss plant breeding objectives with emphasis on the importance of proper choice of objec tive for achieving success in variety development. Because plant-breeding activities are normally organized around specific crops, there are chapters describing breeding procedures and objectives for the major crop plants; the crops were chosen for their economic importance or diversity in breeding sys tems. These chapters provide a broad overview of the kinds of problems with which the breeder must cope.

Book excerpt: Plants have been successfully selectively bred for thousands of years, culminating in incredible yields, quality, resistance and so on that we see in our modern day crops and ornamental plants. In recent years the techniques used have been rapidly advanced and refined to include molecular, cell and genetic techniques. An Introduction to Plant Breeding provides comprehensive coverage of the whole area of plant breeding. Covering modes of reproduction in plants, breeding objectives and schemes, genetics, predictions, selection, alternative techniques and practical considerations. Each chapter is carefully laid out in a student friendly way and includes questions for the reader. The book is essential reading for all those studying, teaching and researching plant breeding.

Practical classes, with lesson numbers have been fitted, immediately after theoretical discussions, in different sub-chapters in Chapters, on the same studies. The lesson, has been divided into 'Introduction', 'Objective', 'Materials required' & 'Procedure'. In some cases, 'assignments' have also been given.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agronomy: A Course in Practical Gardening for High Schools This book has been prepared to meet the needs of high schools in cities and towns where agriculture is taught, and in which the problems that confront the teacher are in some respects different from those that come up in rural communities. The environment of the city child makes it undesirable to emphasize in his case the growing of stock, the production and care of milk, the breeding of animals, and the cultivation of field crops. There is, however, much information of a practical nature regarding the cultivation of plants which he finds necessary for the fullest enjoyment of his surroundings. Though not engaged in growing crops for ft livelihood, he is, nevertheless, interested in the cultivation of vegetables and flowers, the making of lawns and their care, the planting of shrubbery, the trimming of trees, and similar matters. In the present volume it has been the aim, therefore, to develop the subject of agriculture from the urban viewpoint, though the matters discussed are fundamental to any system of cultivating plants and are as applicable to rural communities as elsewhere. Furthermore, it is expected that the book will also serve as a practical guide to that part of the general public which, though no longer in school, takes an interest an the cultivation of plants in lawn, garden, and orchard. Agronomy, as outlined in the following pages, is regarded as a division of agriculture coordinate with animal husbandry.
