Book Synopsis Practical Intranet Development by : John Colby

Book excerpt: An intranet can be a powerful tool. A well-designed intranet becomes the key resource and communications platform for your organization, used by members of staff as their first destination for information. In contrast, a poorly designed intranet will sit unused, accumulating useless information, and eating up IT budgets. So, how do you avoid this situation, and make sure you design the most useful, and usable, intranet? This book takes you through the steps you need to take to make an invaluable intranet, from identifying your users' needs and building an indispensable tool, to marketing the results. It guides you through the problems that may occur, passing on invaluable advice from people who have been through the process before. We start by setting the scene, giving an overview of what intranets are and how to justify it to your organization. We then give you a rundown of the main areas you'll need to think about when developing an intranet, covering browsers, development techniques, usability, content management, security, and internal marketing. Finally, we'll take a look at what to do when the Intranet moves beyond its original function, looking at remote access, extranets, and what to do when the Intranet gets too big.

Book Synopsis Practical Intranet Security by : Paul M. Ashley
Download or read book Practical Intranet Security written by Paul M. Ashley and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreword by Lars Knudsen Practical Intranet Security focuses on the various ways in which an intranet can be violated and gives a thorough review of the technologies that can be used by an organization to secure its intranet. This includes, for example, the new security architecture SESAME, which builds on the Kerberos authentication system, adding to it both public-key technology and a role-based access control service. Other technologies are also included such as a description of how to program with the GSS-API, and modern security technologies such as PGP, S/MIME, SSH, SSL IPSEC and CDSA. The book concludes with a comparison of the technologies. This book is different from other network security books in that its aim is to identify how to secure an organization's intranet. Previously books have concentrated on the Internet, often neglecting issues relating to securing intranets. However the potential risk to business and the ease by which intranets can be violated is often far greater than via the Internet. The aim is that network administrators and managers can get the information that they require to make informed choices on strategy and solutions for securing their own intranets. The book is an invaluable reference for network managers and network administrators whose responsibility it is to ensure the security of an organization's intranet. The book also contains background reading on networking, network security and cryptography which makes it an excellent research reference and undergraduate/postgraduate text book.

Book Synopsis Organizational and Social Perspectives on Information Technology by : Richard Baskerville
Download or read book Organizational and Social Perspectives on Information Technology written by Richard Baskerville and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The articles in this book constitute the proceedings papers from the IFIP WG 8.2 Working Conference, "IS2000: The Social and Organizational Perspective on Research and Practice in Information Technology," held June 1 0-12, 2000, in Aalborg, Denmark. The focus of the conference, and therefore this book, is on the basic aim of the working group, namely, the investigation of the interrelationships among four major components: information systems (IS), information technology (IT), organizations, and society. This basic social and organizational perspective on research and practice in information technology may have evolved substantially since the founding ofthe group, for example, increasing the emphasis on IS development. The plan for the conference was partially rooted in the early WG 8.2 traditions, in which working conferences were substantially composed of invited papers. For IS2000, roughly half of the paper presentations were planned to be invited; the remaining half were planned to be double-blind refereed in response to a "Call For Papers." Invited papers were single-blind reviewed in order to provide the authors with pre-publication feedback and comments, along with the opportunity to revise their papers prior to its final incorporation in this book.

Book Synopsis Assessing Competence in Professional Performance across Disciplines and Professions by : Paul F. Wimmers
Download or read book Assessing Competence in Professional Performance across Disciplines and Professions written by Paul F. Wimmers and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-19 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the challenges of cross-professional comparisons and proposes new forms of performance assessment to be used in professions education. It addresses how complex issues are learned and assessed across and within different disciplines and professions in order to move the process of “performance assessment for learning” to the next level. In order to be better equipped to cope with increasing complexity, change and diversity in professional education and performance assessment, administrators and educators will engage in crucial systems thinking. The main question discussed by the book is how the required competence in the performance of students can be assessed during their professional education at both undergraduate and graduate levels. To answer this question, the book identifies unresolved issues and clarifies conceptual elements for performance assessment. It reviews the development of constructs that cross disciplines and professions such as critical thinking, clinical reasoning, and problem solving. It discusses what it means to instruct and assess students within their own domain of study and across various roles in multiple contexts, but also what it means to instruct and assess students across domains of study in order to judge integration and transfer of learning outcomes. Finally, the book examines what it takes for administrators and educators to develop competence in assessment, such as reliably judging student work in relation to criteria from multiple sources. "... the co-editors of this volume, Marcia Mentkowski and Paul F. Wimmers, are associated with two institutions whose characters are so intimately associated with the insight that assessment must be integrated with curriculum and instructional program if it is to become a powerful influence on the educational process ..." Lee Shulman, Stanford University

Book excerpt: This book examines the future trend toward "intelligent" warfare considering the global environment, the history of warfare, and scientific and technological advancement. It develops a comprehensive set of theoretical frameworks, application concepts, and evaluation criteria for military intelligence. The volume is packed with theoretical highlights and vivid examples, including the tracking of Osama bin Laden, the decapitation strike against Qasem Soleimani, the remote assassination of Iranian nuclear scientists, the drone war in the Nagorno–Karabakh conflict, modern equipment deployed in the Palestinian–Israeli conflict, and the war between social media groups. In addition, the author envisions a possible future for "intelligent" wars in which adversarial parties engage in combat through virtual and unmanned systems. This nature may help avoid the brutality and high death toll associated with traditional warfare. The book explores the possibility of future civilized warfare. It will be of interest to researchers, academics, and students in the fields of politics, military intelligence, and military technology, and to those who are interested in intelligent warfare in general.

It presents step-by-step solutions with universal application. Each issue discussed is accompanied by short practical suggestions for improved intranet design and architecture.
