Book Synopsis Theoretical Materials Science by : A. Gonis
Download or read book Theoretical Materials Science written by A. Gonis and published by Materials Research Society. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary goal of a materials scientist is a predictive understanding of materials properties and that requires a clear picture of the role played by electrons in determining the materials' behavior. Only then can one hope to design and build new materials with desired physical, chemical and engineering characteristics. Research is carried out on the basis of quantum mechanics, through solution of the so-called single-particle Schrödinger equation that describes the behavior of electrons in a solid. This book describes one formal approach to solving the Schrödinger equation developed within the framework of multiple scattering theory (MST). It offers a comprehensive and welcome entrée to the field of electronic structure of solids and should serve as a treatise for advanced undergraduates, graduate students and researchers in the field. Topics Include: concepts and formalism; periodic solids and impurities; substitutional alloys; surfaces and interfaces; transport; phonons and photons and formal Green-function theory.
Book Synopsis Practical Handbook of Material Flow Analysis by : Paul H. Brunner
Download or read book Practical Handbook of Material Flow Analysis written by Paul H. Brunner and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-04-19 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first-ever book on this subject establishes a rigid, transparent and useful methodology for investigating the material metabolism of anthropogenic systems. Using Material Flow Analysis (MFA), the main sources, flows, stocks, and emissions of man-made and natural materials can be determined. By demonstrating the application of MFA, this book reveals how resources can be conserved and the environment protected within complex systems. The fourteen case studies presented exemplify the potential for MFA to contribute to sustainable materials management. Exercises throughout the book deepen comprehension and expertise. The authors have had success in applying MFA to various fields, and now promote the use of MFA so that future engineers and planners have a common method for solving resource-oriented problems.

Book Synopsis Materials Syntheses by : Ulrich Schubert
Download or read book Materials Syntheses written by Ulrich Schubert and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-11-23 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Materials syntheses are more complex than syntheses of inorganic or organic compounds. Materials synthesis protocols often suffer from unclarities, irreproducibility, lack in detail and lack in standards. The need to change this situation is the main motivation for this book. It collects a number of detailed protocols, ranging from organic polymers to carbonaceous and ceramic materials, from gels to porous and layered materials and from powders and nanoparticles to films.

Book Synopsis Auger- and X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy in Materials Science by : Siegfried Hofmann

This book was released on 2012-10-25 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To anyone who is interested in surface chemical analysis of materials on the nanometer scale, this book is prepared to give appropriate information. Based on typical application examples in materials science, a concise approach to all aspects of quantitative analysis of surfaces and thin films with AES and XPS is provided. Starting from basic principles which are step by step developed into practically useful equations, extensive guidance is given to graduate students as well as to experienced researchers. Key chapters are those on quantitative surface analysis and on quantitative depth profiling, including recent developments in topics such as surface excitation parameter and backscattering correction factor. Basic relations are derived for emission and excitation angle dependencies in the analysis of bulk material and of fractional nano-layer structures, and for both smooth and rough surfaces. It is shown how to optimize the analytical strategy, signal-to-noise ratio, certainty and detection limit. Worked examples for quantification of alloys and of layer structures in practical cases (e.g. contamination, evaporation, segregation and oxidation) are used to critically review different approaches to quantification with respect to average matrix correction factors and matrix relative sensitivity factors. State-of-the-art issues in quantitative, destructive and non-destructive depth profiling are discussed with emphasis on sputter depth profiling and on angle resolved XPS and AES. Taking into account preferential sputtering and electron backscattering corrections, an introduction to the mixing-roughness-information depth (MRI) model and its extensions is presented.
