Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical French Phonetics This book aims to help students of French to overcome the difficulties which confront them when they try to acquire a correct pronunciation of that language. It is the result of many years' successful experience in teaching phonetics to American students. The author is thoroughly familiar with the difficulties of pronunciation which they encounter, and understands how to lead them to acquire a good French accent. The book discusses the principles of voice production, illustrates by means of two cuts the organs of speech, and gives the exact position of these organs in making each French sound. It devotes a chapter to the vowels and one to consonants, giving the phonetic symbol for each sound with a paragraph explaining its use. One chapter is devoted entirely to daily exercises for the pupil's practice. Another is given to phonetic transcription of French stories and poems, the same piece of literature being presented in two columns, side by side, one in the regular Roman print and the other in the phonetic alphabet. The vocabulary at the end furnishes the student with the meaning of every French word and idiom occurring in the chapter on phonetic transcription. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Introduction to French Phonetics: For the Use of English-Speaking Students and Teachers In the first part of this book I have endeavoured to fix the identity of each sound in standard French by (i) giving a list of its traditional spellings, (ii) defining the position of the organs of speech necessary for its production, and (iii) explaining its relations to other sounds, usually its nearest English analogues. Where the pronunciation of the latter fluctuates, reference is made to the most important varia tions, including those current In America and Australia. Occasion is everywhere taken to warn the student against the errors' into which he will be most likely to fall. The second part deals with the factors which control the combination of sounds in connected speech. One needs only an elementary acquaintance with the language to be aware that a knowledge of these factors is of vital import ance. Here, again, wherever they seemed likely to be helpful, comparisons have been drawn between the two languages. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Guide to French Pronunciation and Practical Phonetics For the past few years special attention has been paid to the study of Phonetics for two reasons: (1) It is impossible to speak good French or to acquire a pure accent without studying in detail that part of the Grammar which treats of sounds and articulations. (2) We cannot expect a pupil opening a French Grammar for the first time to Read a word. Consequently in writing the following pages, the pupil who has no teacher has been constantly kept in view. A practical survey of the French sounds may prevent students from groping in the dark or depending exclusively on their teachers in preparing their next lesson. Furthermore, we know that students can acquire French in America as well as in France, provided they are well grounded. Pupils properly trained have no difficulty in enjoying good French spoken or in interpreting the plays at any French theatre. It has been demonstrated that by following the directions set forth in this framework, much drudgery may be avoided and interest awakened for further pursuit. We extend our grateful appreciation to Dr. Hugo A. Rennert, Director of the French Department of the University of Pennsylvania, for his valuable suggestions, also to Dr. J. P. W. Crawford. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of French Phonetics This little book is intended as a manual for elementary and advanced students of the French language. In elementary courses it may be employed as a substitute for the pages devoted to pronunciation in whatever Grammar the teacher is using. In such courses the material printed in small type should be omitted. In advanced courses, the book may be used as a basis for a review of the pronunciation, and as a reference book. The authors have endeavored to present the essential facts of French pronunciation, but have purposely excluded the treatment of minor variations in sound (for example, intermediate vowel qualities) and the registration of words which are distinctly rare. In many cases Frenchmen themselves vary in the utterance of a given word or group of words: in such cases we have generally given only the variety which seems approved by the best usage. For such disputed questions, and for all matters of greater detail, the reader is urged to consult the books listed in the Bibliography. We have endeavored to present the essential facts as clearly and effectively as possible. Most earlier publications on the same subject mingle the treatment of the several sounds with the rules for the pronunciation of the several letters. The results of such a method seem to us unfortunate: the student confuses his material, and rarely concentrates his attention on the really important matter - the actual learning of the difficult French sounds. These dangers we have tried to avoid by treating, first, one by one, the several sounds; then, one by one, the several letters. Book excerpt: Excerpt from French Pronunciation: Principles and Practice and a Summary of Usage in Writing and Printing The path of any one undertaking to furnish a guide to French pronunciation is a thorny one. Nevertheless, despite this fact and the thanklessness of the task, the subject receives, in a variety of forms, some attention annually. Most of this attention is of the obligatory kind and is found in the opening chapter of almost every French grammar that appears. Such treatment, While necessarily concise and brief and generally well adapted to the purpose in view, of introducing the student to the subject, hardly ever goes beyond that goal. Besides the grammars, there are quite a few manuals, or treatises, on pronunciation that appear from time to time, and in their way are helpful to the serious student of the subject, no matter how objectionable he may consider many features in such works. Lastly there are the recent dictionaries, in most Of which the most cursory examination reveals an amount of attention given to the subject of pronuncia tion proportionate to the very considerable interest there in manifested of late years. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Teach French Phonetics: Lessons, Exercises Drills for Class Use The following pages are not concerned with Phonetic Theory. They deal with practice, and with practice confined to the elementary stages in the class-room. They are the result of actual class-room experience. The book has been divided into two parts: the first part containing a course of ten introductory lessons for teaching the phonetic symbols, and the second part being devoted to a collection of class-room exercises, described below. Part I. The Teaching Of The French Phonetic Symbols. The amount of phonetic theory that should be taught in the modern-language classes of our schools will long remain a point of contention among modern-language masters: teachers differ widely in their practice in this respect. We have therefore adopted the plan of giving two sets of introductory lessons for teaching the phonetic symbols - the first set representing what in our opinion should be the minimum, and the second set, the maximum of phonetic theory taught. This plan will allow the reader to choose the one he prefers, or to substitute for either set a combination or modification of both. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Principles of French Pronunciation This book is for English-speaking people. It has a three fold object. First, it should serve those general readers or speakers of French whose feeling for the language is such that they will not rest content with a mere rough-and-ready approximation to the way in which it is pronounced by Frenchmen. Secondly, its concern is with teachers and their pupils already devoted to the direct method of modem-language study, as also with those who are liberal enough to give that method a trial. Thirdly, it may furnish a handy epitome of its subject for academic students of French, whose needs must be met more in detail by the advanced investigations of the recognized specialists, and particularly those native to the language.
