Book excerpt: Discussions on the production, distribution, use, and consumption of pottery from the Neolithic Near East. Ceramics from the Neolithic period carry visual messages through their shapes, styles, and painted decorations. Honoring the work of Dutch archaeologist Olivier Nieuwenhuyse, the chapters in this volume go beyond the technical to address issues of ideology, symbolism, feasting, and communalism in pottery productions in the Near East. Essays exploring aspects of the chaîne opératoire of ceramic production, including archaeometric and experimental techniques in the neolithic pottery tradition, provide new insights into how the vessels were distributed and used. This international volume brings together papers presented at the Third International Workshop on Late Neolithic Pottery from the Ancient Near East.
Book Synopsis Plain Pottery Traditions of the Eastern Mediterranean and Near East by : Claudia Glatz
Download or read book Plain Pottery Traditions of the Eastern Mediterranean and Near East written by Claudia Glatz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evolution and proliferation of plain and predominantly wheel-made pottery presents a characteristic feature of the societies of the Near East and Eastern Mediterranean since the fourth millennium B.C. This plain pottery has received little detailed archaeological attention in comparison to aesthetically more pleasing and chronologically sensitive decorated traditions. Yet, their simplicity and standardization suggest they are products of craft specialists, the result of high-volume production, and therefore important in understanding the social systems in early complex societies. This volume-reevaluates the role and significance of plain pottery traditions from both historically specific perspectives and from a comparative point of view;-examines the uses and functions of this pottery in relation to social negotiation and group identity formation;-helps scholars understand cross-regional similarities in development and use.

Book excerpt: "The glazed ceramics produced in the Islamic world are of tremendous importance to the fields of art history, archaeology, and the history of technology. Unfortunately, their study has been beset by three major problems. Firstly, problems existed with the chronological and typological ordering of the various types, particularly in the relationship between different regions. Secondly, debilitating problems existed regarding the identification of centres of production for these wares. Although there is some documentary and archaeological evidence, it has not been enough in the overwhelming majority of cases to link ceramic types to particular centres with any certainty. Thirdly, technical studies of these wares have previously focused on a few types, while most important technological questions have gone unanswered. Such questions include the origins of tin-opacified glazes, stonepaste bodies, underglaze painting, and other techniques." "This study is aimed at approaching these three problems, focusing on the period from the beginning of the Islamic period, up until about 1250. Three chief methodologies have been used. Standard archaeological approaches to pottery classification are used to create a seriated ceramic typology, including study of forms and motif assemblages."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Synopsis The Cypro-Phoenician Pottery of the Iron Age by : Nicola Schreiber
Download or read book The Cypro-Phoenician Pottery of the Iron Age written by Nicola Schreiber and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-01 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For almost a century scholars have been perplexed by Cypro-Phoenician (or Black-on-Red) pottery. In this major study, Dr. Schreiber’s research, coupled with her own work in the field, resolves the pottery’s origin and provides a fresh assessment of the chronology of the region. Transporting perfumed oil around the Mediterranean and Near East, the pottery offers valuable clues to Iron Age trade - shipping, cargoes, and trading entrepots. Dr Schreiber investigates the sources of perfumed oil and the relative roles of Cyprus and Phoenicia in trade to the Aegean islands. The book provides archaeologists and historians with a work of key significance in unravelling the human narrative of the early centuries of the 1st millennium BC.
