Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pots and Other Living Beings is made up of poems with paired photographs, each describing an aspect of living in the postmodern, neoliberal age, with its promised and failed utopia, ruin, and dispossessions. The work comes from a series of 4000 photographs and binders full of notes, created during a research trip to the American southwest regarding the founding, making, dreaming, and proliferation of the nuclear bomb; thinking of the food, family farms, arts, schools, hospitals, we could have had, if our resources, imagination, time, and energy had been directed towards life, in all of his/her forms.
Download or read book Martin Versfeld written by Ernst Wolff and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2021-10-15 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Martin Versfeld (1909–1995) is one of South Africa’s greatest philosophers, appreciated by academics and activists, poets and the broader public. His masterful prose spans the tension between disquiet and joy. Detractor of the violent trends of modernity, a critic of apartheid from the first hour, he was among the first philosophers of ecology. At the same time he celebrated the generosity of the world and advocated an ethics of simplicity, drawing on mediaeval theology and Eastern wisdom. His philosophy offered food for thought in dark times of the 20th century, as it still does for us in the 21st century. This first book-length study on Versfeld is an invitation to think with him on justice and exploitation, cultural difference and human nature, religion and the environment, time and connectedness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the erudition that has distinguished his lifelong study of literary criticism, Wellek considers the trends, theories, and quarrels of recent years. He continues to insist that criticism--whether written by structuralists, phenomenologists, Marxists, or the New Critics--makes judgments and also takes into account "a common humanity that makes all art accessible to us." He also considers the relationship between literature and linguistics and the difficulty of constructing evolutionary models for literary history. Originally published in 1982. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A celebration of the remarkable poem vessels of Dave the Potter David Drake, also known as Dave the Potter, was born enslaved in Edgefield in the backcountry of South Carolina near the Savannah River. Despite laws prohibiting enslaved people from learning to read or write, David was literate and signed some of his pots. His practice was not only to add his name and a date but also to embellish his work with verse—a powerful statement of resistance. The Words and Wares of David Drake collects multifaceted scholarship about David and his craft. Building on the 1998 national traveling exhibit catalog, I Made This Jar: The Life and Works of Enslaved African-American Potter, Dave, and featuring more than one hundred beautiful images and six new essays, this authoritative volume presents the diverse perspectives of scholars, artists, and collectors. The Words and Wares of David Drake adds important depth and context to our understanding of both Edgefield pottery and the life of Dave. David's work is now so highly prized it is the cornerstone of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's traveling exhibit of nineteenth-century ceramic art from Edgefield. Book Synopsis Melting-Pot Modernism by : Sarah Wilson
Download or read book Melting-Pot Modernism written by Sarah Wilson and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2011-03-15 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1891 and 1920 more than 18 million immigrants entered the United States. While many Americans responded to this influx by proposing immigration restriction or large-scale "Americanization" campaigns, a few others, figures such as Jane Addams and John Dewey, adopted the image of the melting pot to oppose such measures. These Progressives imagined assimilation as a multidirectional process, in which both native-born and immigrants contributed their cultural gifts to a communal fund. Melting-Pot Modernism reveals the richly aesthetic nature of assimilation at the turn of the twentieth century, focusing on questions of the individual's relation to culture, the protection of vulnerable populations, the sharing of cultural heritages, and the far-reaching effects of free-market thinking. By tracing the melting-pot impulse toward merging and cross-fertilization through the writings of Henry James, James Weldon Johnson, Willa Cather, and Gertrude Stein, as well as through the autobiography, sociology, and social commentary of their era, Sarah Wilson makes a new connection between the ideological ferment of the Progressive era and the literary experimentation of modernism. Wilson puts literary analysis at the service of intellectual history, showing that literary modes of thought and expression both shaped and were shaped by debates over cultural assimilation. Exploring the depth and nuance of an earlier moment's commitment to cultural inclusiveness, Melting-Pot Modernism gives new meaning to American struggles to imaginatively encompass difference—and to the central place of literary interpretation in understanding such struggles.

Book Synopsis Israel's Poetry of Resistance by : Hugh Page
Download or read book Israel's Poetry of Resistance written by Hugh Page and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2013-08-01 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Noting that Israel's earliest responses to earth-shaking changes were cast in the powerfully expressive language of poetry, Hugh R. Page Jr. argues that the careful collection and preservation of these traditions was an act of resistance, a communal no to the forces of despair and a yes to the creative power of the Spirit. Further, Page argues, the power of these poems to craft and shape a future for a people who had suffered acute displacement and marginalization offers a rich spiritual repertoire for Africana peoples today, and for all who find themselves perennially outside the social or political mainstream.

Book excerpt: **Named a Best Book of the Year by The Boston Globe, Garden & Gun, Electric Literature, and St. Louis Public Radio** The New York Times bestselling author of The Book of Delights and Inciting Joy is back with exactly the book we need in these unsettling times. Margaret Roach of The New York Times says, “Yes, please. I'll have another dose of delight.” In Ross Gay’s new collection of small, daily wonders, again written over the course of a year, one of America’s most original voices continues his ongoing investigation of delight. For Gay, what delights us is what connects us, what gives us meaning, from the joy of hearing a nostalgic song blasting from a passing car to the pleasure of refusing the “nefarious” scannable QR code menus, from the tiny dog he fell hard for to his mother baking a dozen kinds of cookies for her grandchildren. As always, Gay revels in the natural world—sweet potatoes being harvested, a hummingbird carousing in the beebalm, a sunflower growing out of a wall around the cemetery, the shared bounty from a neighbor’s fig tree—and the trillion mysterious ways this glorious earth delights us. The Book of (More) Delights is a volume to savor and share.

Book Synopsis Pine Cones and Pearls by : Kallie Lynn Rice
Download or read book Pine Cones and Pearls written by Kallie Lynn Rice and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2009-01-15 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just as pine cones and pearls are a contrast of textures, so is this book, a contrast of subjects and thoughts presented in a variety of styles. Some people will connect with the material and others may not. I hope as you read this book, you will connect with something in a poem or essay. In our hearts, we each have a story to tell and I encourage you as I was encouraged, to share that story, that poem or those thoughts in some way with another person just as I have done in Pine Cones and Pearls. Over the years I have dabbled in writing poetry and short stories. Most of them had been placed in a book, tucked away in a closet and forgotten. This book is the result of cleaning out the closet. These writings are a combination of old and new material that depict experiences occurring in my life.
