Book excerpt: Excerpt from Potash in Agriculture: Results Obtained in the United States Early in the last century, Stassfurt, in Northern Germany (in the province of Saxony), was noted for its extensive salt-works, which employed on y the unscientific pan process of evaporating water from a natural brine, obtained by pumping from driven salt-wells. This, method was slow, wasteful and expensive, so that when deposits of solid rock-salt were discovered 'in various places, this evaporated product could not compete against the mined crystal salt. Hun dreds of thousands of them should use it, both for their own present and future profit and to prevent their posterity from receiving a heritage of worn out soils. But ashes - once the most common source of potash - are no longer to be had in quantity. Our forests are now cleared and the ash heap of the pioneer is a thing of the past, while wood as a fuel for factories and railroads has been replaced by coal and oil. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Potash Pays: Practical Suggestions to Farmers Showing How to Use Fertilizers With Profit While certain tests with certain soils in California have shown that they contained considerable potash, yet the important question is: How much of this potash is avail able as plant food? Or, the question may be asked: Is this potash naturally in the soil in a soluble condition? If the potash is in an insoluble condition it is useless to plant growth, and potash fertilizers must be used in order to obtain proper yields. The mere statement that a chemical analysis shows considerable potash in a soil is not sufficient; for by present chemical methods it is impossible to determine the quantity of plant food which is available to the different plants growing on the soil. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Potash and Paying Crops: The Results of the Latest Scientific Investigations in Germany The prosperity of any agricultural country depends upon the prosperity of its agricultural community, and the latter, in turn, depends upon the quantity and the quality of the crops raised on its land. That country takes the lead, in the long run, which raises on a given area twice as much as another country; that farmer is more prosperous who raises on a ten-acre field as much, if not more, than another does on twenty acres. This plain, simple and self-evident consideration establishes at once the pre-emi nent position which in our days agricultural science should, and as a matter of fact, does occupy in civilized countries. For, the ultimate object of _all scientific research, of all work in the laboratory, and of all field experiments, is not so much the unearthing of a scientific truth as rather the practical application of scientific truths to farming, so as to render this pursuit more profitable and less uncertain. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Publications From the Department of Agriculture and Biological Chemistry, the Pennsylvania State College, State College, Pa, Vol. 2: 1931-1935 The effect of a high concentration of lime in the soil is to render soil pot ash and potash applied in fertilizers more insoluble. Care should be taken, therefore, to avoid using lime where it is not necessary; and to avoid, as far as possible, those treatments, such as ap plying excess quantities of nitrogen containing materials, which increase the availability of the lime in the soil. In addition to rendering soil potash insoluble, our results show that a high concentration of lime tends to inter fere with the direct absorption of this material by the plant, especially in a dry season. Under these conditions we find that the dry matter of the cured plants contains about 8 per cent of lime and about 2 per cent of pot ash. This is not desirable; the large amount of calcium is not helpful to the burn, while the low content of potash is even more undesirable from the standpoint of burning quality. The plants also contain excessive quan tities of nitrogen, which 15 harmful to the burning quality. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
