Book Synopsis Diagnosis and Long-Term Outcomes of Posttraumatic Lower Limb Osteomyelitis by : Michalis Panteli
Download or read book Diagnosis and Long-Term Outcomes of Posttraumatic Lower Limb Osteomyelitis written by Michalis Panteli and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction: Post-traumatic osteomyelitis (PTOM) is an uncommon but potentially devastating complication of trauma. The aim of our study was to describe the demographics, treatment strategies and long-term outcomes of patients presenting with post-traumatic osteomyelitis (PTOM).Patients and Methods: All consecutive patients presenting to a level 1 Trauma centre with a confirmed diagnosis of PTOM of the tibia or femur were retrospectively identified, with a minimum follow-up of five years. Patients younger than 18 years old and patients presenting without a history of trauma were excluded from further analysis. Treatment was individualised according to the patient needs and the preferences of the operating surgeon. Outcomes were assessed according pain levels and return to function. Limb function was assessed according to the Lower Extremity Functional Index (LEFI), and quality of life with the EQ-5D-3L. Results: Seventy-one patients (59 male, average age 46 years) were included. PTOM involved the tibia in 45 patients and the femur in 26 patients. Eighteen patients originally sustained an open fracture. The average time from injury to presentation was 23.6 months (median 12 months; range 3-84 months). Patients were followed-up for an average of 86 months (80 months; 60-186 months) requiring on average 2.8 surgical procedures (2 procedures; 1-12 procedures), and 2.3 readmissions (2 readmissions; 0-10 readmissions). Treatment of PTOM included removal of metalwork, radical soft tissue and bone debridement as required and administration of local and/or systemic antibiotics. The reamer-irrigator-aspirator (RIA) technique was utilised in 31 cases. Fifty-one patients received local antibiotics via a cement nail (24), spacer (16), beads (6), or a combination of techniques (5). Twenty patients required soft tissue coverage including a free-flap (10), pedicled flap (4), skin graft alone (1), or combination of techniques (5). Patients received, on average, 13.8 days (14 days; 0-47 days) of intravenous and 38.5 days (28 days; 0-365 days) of oral antibiotics.Forty-four per-cent of patients were left with a moderately/severely-impaired limb, with eight patients requiring an amputation (above knee in one patient). Recurrence of disease occurred in 16 patients. Both the use of RIA and delivery of local antibiotics were associated with significantly improved outcomes (p

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book offers a comprehensive and user-oriented description of the theoretical and technical system fundamentals of computed tomography (CT) for a wide readership, from conventional single-slice acquisitions to volume acquisition with multi-slice and cone-beam spiral CT. It covers in detail all characteristic parameters relevant for image quality and all performance features significant for clinical application. Readers will thus be informed how to use a CT system to an optimum depending on the different diagnostic requirements. This includes a detailed discussion about the dose required and about dose measurements as well as how to reduce dose in CT. All considerations pay special attention to spiral CT and to new developments towards advanced multi-slice and cone-beam CT. For the third edition most of the contents have been updated and latest topics like dual source CT, dual energy CT, flat detector CT and interventional CT have been added. The enclosed CD-ROM again offers copies of all figures in the book and attractive case studies, including many examples from the most recent 64-slice acquisitions, and interactive exercises for image viewing and manipulation. This book is intended for all those who work daily, regularly or even only occasionally with CT: physicians, radiographers, engineers, technicians and physicists. A glossary describes all the important technical terms in alphabetical order. Book Synopsis Transosseous Osteosynthesis by : Gavriil A. Ilizarov
Download or read book Transosseous Osteosynthesis written by Gavriil A. Ilizarov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 796 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume deals with the transosseous external fixation techniques that I have been developing over the course of the past 40 years. During this time, our research in medicine, biology and engineering has led to the evolution of more than 800 unique, highly effective methods of treatment that extend beyond the realm of traumatology and orthopedics. The book features a comprehensive theoretical and clinical description of the biologic laws governing the depen dence of the shape-forming processes of bones and joints upon the adequacy of blood supply, as well as a delineation of the effect of tension-stress upon the genesis and growth of tissues. I have in cluded our latest data on tissue growth and regeneration during transosseous osteosyntheses. The book summarizes the biomechanical principles of applica tion of my apparatus; clinical cases selected from more than 25000 patients illustrate the management of some of the most complex disorders of the locomotor system. New solutions to many therapeutic problems are described. In particular, severe limb trauma with large defects of bone, vessels, nerves and skin can be managed without resort to transplantation. Radical debridement surgery can be followed by a one-step restora tion of the missing tissue, thus decreasing the likelihood of a serious wound infection or an amputation.
Book Synopsis What Radiology Residents Need to Know by : Ronald L. Eisenberg
Download or read book What Radiology Residents Need to Know written by Ronald L. Eisenberg and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an introduction to musculoskeletal radiology, specifically designed for the needs of first-year residents. On the first rotation in musculoskeletal imaging, radiology residents are asked to learn significant amounts of information at a fast and unrelenting pace. However, most current books are densely written and contain far more material than residents need to know. Moreover, the number, variety and quality of images is often limited. What Radiology Residents Need to Know: Musculoskeletal Radiology answers these needs by presenting the important information in bullet fashion, divided into convenient sub-units, such as "clinical information," "imaging findings," and "management." In most cases, an individual pathological condition can be presented in one page or less. In addition, it contains tips on approaching and interpreting radiographs, MRI and CT based on decades of practical experience and teaching residents at the work station. With liberal use of illustrations in the text and an online bank of many more high-quality images, this book gives readers a comprehensive library of musculoskeletal imaging scans and serves as an ideal guide for radiology residents.

Book Synopsis Physeal Injury Other Than Fracture by : Hamlet A. Peterson
Download or read book Physeal Injury Other Than Fracture written by Hamlet A. Peterson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-02-07 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book documents all the ways a growth plate can be damaged, other than fracture. This damage can be inflicted by a wide variety of insults, most of which are uncommon occurrences. They all, however, have two similar characteristics: normal roentgenographs at the time of insult and premature complete or partial arrest noted weeks, months, or years later. Because of this delay, the arrest is often not suspected or recognised early. The resulting bone deformity and relative shortening usually go undetected until corrective surgery is needed. This book emphasises etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of these injuries.
