Book excerpt: A severe glaze storm in January 1998 affected a broad geographic region encompassing parts of eastern Canada and the adjacent north-eastern United States. Ice accumulations were estimated at over 100mm in some areas. Over 3 million hectares of forests and woodlots were damaged in eastern Ontario and southern Quebec. One of the hardest hit areas was that around Winchester, Ontario. Four woodlots were studied in Winchester Township, Ontario following the ice storm to investigate post-storm damage patterns to present hardwood species. Over 1000 hardwood trees were examined for degree of damage based on percentage of crown loss. The results indicate a varied response to glaze accumulation depending on tree morphology, size, species and position in the woodlot. Based on a susceptibility index of vulnerability to ice damage ' Populus tremuloides', 'Acer rubrum' and 'A. saccharinum' and the 'A. rubrum' and 'A. saccharinum ' hybrid typically sustained severe damage. 'Tilia americana, Ulmus americana, A. saccharum, Fraxinus Americana' and 'F. nigra' sustained intermediate damage. 'Quercus macrocarpa' and 'Amelanchier laevis' sustained minor damage. Varied response to ice accumulation is dependent on location and biological factors including location within woodlot and canopy, aspect, tree diameter and height.

The literature search also superficially considered: wind and snow damage; some of the biological functions of tree reaction to wounds, crown damage, defoliation, and increased exposure; and disease and insect implications.

Book Synopsis Environmental Hazards by : Keith Smith
Download or read book Environmental Hazards written by Keith Smith and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-01-13 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The expanded fifth edition of Environmental Hazards provides a balanced overview of all the major rapid-onset events that threaten people and what they value in the twenty-first century. It integrates cutting-edge material from the physical and social sciences to demonstrate how natural and human systems interact to place communities of all sizes, and at all stages of economic development, at risk. It also shows how the existing losses to life and property can be reduced. Part I of this established textbook defines basic concepts of hazard, risk, vulnerability and disaster. Critical attention is given to the evolution of theory, to the scale of disaster impact and to the various strategies that have been developed to minimise the impact of damaging events. Part II employs a consistent chapter structure to explain how individual hazards, such as earthquakes, severe storms, floods and droughts, plus biophysical and technological processes, create distinctive patterns of loss throughout the world. The ways in which different societies make a positive response to these threats are placed in the context of ongoing global change. In this extensively revised edition: An entirely new and innovative chapter explains how modern-day complexity contributes to the generation of hazard and risk Additional material supplies fresh perspectives on landslides, biophysical hazards and the increasingly important role of global-scale processes The increased use of boxed sections allows a greater focus on significant generic issues and offers more opportunity to examine a carefully selected range of up-to-date case studies Each chapter now concludes with an annotated list of key resources, including further reading and relevant websites. Environmental Hazards is a well-written and generously illustrated introduction to all the natural, social and technological events that combine to cause death and destruction across the globe. It draws on the latest research findings to guide the student from common problems, theories and policies to explore practical, real-world situations. This authoritative, yet accessible, book captures both the complexity and dynamism of environmental hazards and has become essential reading for students of every kind seeking to understand the nature and consequences of a most important contemporary issue.

Book excerpt: “With wit and a humbling sense of wonder, this is a book that can be shared and appreciated by a wide audience who now religiously check their phones for daily forecasts.” — Publishers Weekly Starred Review “This terrific, accessible, and exciting read helps us to better understand the aspects of weather and the atmosphere all around us.” —Library Journal Starred Review We live at the bottom of an ocean of air — 5,200 million million tons, to be exact. It sounds like a lot, but Earth’s atmosphere is smeared onto its surface in an alarmingly thin layer — 99 percent contained within 18 miles. Yet, within this fragile margin lies a magnificent realm — at once gorgeous, terrifying, capricious, and elusive. With his keen eye for identifying and uniting seemingly unrelated events, Chris Dewdney reveals to us the invisible rivers in the sky that affect how our weather works and the structure of clouds and storms and seasons, the rollercoaster of climate. Dewdney details the history of weather forecasting and introduces us to the eccentric and determined pioneers of science and observation whose efforts gave us the understanding of weather we have today. 18 Miles is a kaleidoscopic and fact-filled journey that uncovers our obsession with the atmosphere and weather — as both evocative metaphor and physical reality. From the roaring winds of Katrina to the frozen oceans of Snowball Earth, Dewdney entertains as he gives readers a long overdue look at the very air we breathe.

Download or read book The State of Canada's Forests. 1997-1998, the People's Forests written by Canadian Forest Service and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report provides factual and analytical information about Canada's forests, and addresses topics and issues important to the development of the Canadian forest sector. In addition to providing an annual overview on the state of Canadian forestry, the report places particular emphasis on Canada's forests as a source of commercial timber, and on management and environmental issues related to timber production. A national forest account is introduced to show the changes in the forest resource as it is depleted by harvesting, fire and insects, and replenished through reforestation and intensive management activities. Data are included from the mid-1970s to the present on exports by province and their value, their contribution to the balance of trade, employment, and types of materials produced.
