Compounded disturbances such as multiple fires or post-disturbance management activities are increasingly common, but ecological responses are not well understood and may represent novel types of disturbances. I studied bird and small mammal communities in the mixed severity fire regime of the Siskiyou Mountains of southwestern Oregon, USA, at various points in time after one or two high severity fires in and around the historic 200,000-ha Biscuit Fire. Post-disturbance time intervals included 2-4 years after a single fire, 17-18 years after a single fire, 2-3 years after a repeat fire (15 year interval between fires), and >100 years since stand-replacement fire (mature/old-growth forest). Additionally, I examined the response of these communities to postfire salvage logging of the Biscuit Fire. Avian species richness did not differ significantly among habitats. Among the recently burned habitats, bird density was highest 17-18-years after fire and lowest 2 years after a single fire. Sites 17-18 years postfire were dominated by broad-leaved shrubs. Ordination of community data revealed two distinct gradients in avian species composition, one relating to tree structure (live, dead-sound, dead-decayed) and another relating to shrub volume and height. Bird density was positively related to shrub height and volume; increases in broad-leaved plants following fire were associated with significant increases in bird density. Immediately after a single high severity fire event, small mammal communities transitioned from low abundance and high species richness to high abundance and low species richness dominated by deer mice. Partial recovery to a pre-burn state was evident 17 years after fire with wood rats being present but vole species still absent relative to unburned mature forest. Repeat fire was associated with heightened abundance of deer mice and herbaceous cover. Postfire salvage logging created a significant pulse of woody debris but no significant changes in densities or biomass of small mammals were observed. Fire effects on small mammal communities were much larger than those of postfire salvage logging in the short term. Longer term studies of changes in small mammal communities following salvage logging are needed over decades and greater time scales to fully evaluate the impacts of the management activity. To examine bird response to postfire salvage logging, we used point counts to measure changes in densities and occurrence for 17 common bird species. Response was measured at two spatial scales (20 ha and 2 ha) relative to two measures of salvage logging: proportion of surrounding area logged and logging intensity (basal area removed). The 20-ha scale comprised the logging unit as well as unit edges and surrounding unlogged areas, while the 2-ha scale comprised only the logging unit and not surrounding edges. At the 20-ha scale, we found a positive response in the density of shrub-associated species (house wren, lazuli bunting, black-headed grosbeak [scientific names given in Appendix A]) and edge-associated species (olive-sided flycatcher, yellow-rumped warbler) and little evidence of negative responses, save for a reduction in density of Hammond's flycatcher. At the 2-ha scale, shrub-associates again responded positively but not edge-associates. Brown creeper responded negatively at the 2-ha scale and five species had suggestive negative trends but they were not significant suggesting that, except for shrub nesting species, bird use of salvage units is associated with edges and not interior portions of salvage units. The lack of a strong negative response to salvage logging of the Biscuit Fire suggests that the small logging unit sizes relative to the burn area, as well as extensive snag retention in riparian buffers, tended to retain many bird species in the burn landscape.

This current work investigated the long-term impacts that wildfires may have on avifauna in Mediterranean habitats of Southern California, by reassessing species diversity and vegetation cover previously studied by USGS before and after large fires in 2003. Two study areas in San Diego County, California, Rancho Jamul Ecological Preserve and Santa Ysabel Open Space Preserve, served as primary research locations. Each study area contained 30 individual point count locations split equally between five different vegetation types: Chaparral, Coastal Sage Scrub, Oak Woodland, Grasslands, and Riparian. In 2021, A total of 1,247 individuals representing 87 bird species were observed (709 at Santa Ysabel, 538 at Rancho Jamul). Data collected by the USGS from two years before and two years after the 2003 fire events of both bird point counts and estimations of vegetation cover were compared to data collected in 2021. Two primary findings of this current project show that time period (p = 0.0006) and percent change in herb/grass cover in the post fire period (p = 0.04) were the strongest predictors of changes in avian diversity. I also conducted a canonical correspondence analysis and found a change in species composition over time, most likely caused by how much time had passed since the most recent fire event.

Williams State Military Reservation, Utah, during summer of 1993-1998. I used point counts and incidental observations to compile an avian checklist. I observed 100 species, accounting for one third of all birds known from Utah. Overlap in species composition among habitats was considerable, yet each habitat supported a distinct complement of common species. I compared bird species composition, abundance, richness, and diversity before and after fire in burned and unburned Gam bel oak woodland using point counts. I also investigated how similarity of the Gam bel oak avian community to surrounding communities changed after fire. Post-fire changes in individual species abundances reflected a shift from a woodland to a grassland/shrubland community. However, this shift occurred through elimination rather than addition of species, i.e., the post-fire Gambel oak avifauna was a subset of the pre- fire avifauna. Species richness and diversity on burned plots decreased significantly after fi re; unburned plots experienced significant increases in richness and diversity. I also used point counts to evaluate recovery of the Gam bel oak avian community by comparing species composition, abundance, richness, and diversity in different-age burned and unburned Gambel oak woodland. Total abundance, richness, diversity, and similarity to the unburned community increased with post-fire age. I observed significant differences in the abundance of 10 species. Fire did not result in sequential invasion and replacement of bird species assemblages; rather, species found in burned plots were a subset of the avifauna in unburned plots. Return of individual species was related to recovery of preferred nesting and foraging substrates. Over 25% of species found in unburned plots were still absent 11 years post-fire. I conclude that fire had pronounced effects on avian community composition and structure in this habitat. The contention that almost all bird species associated with Gambel oak woodlands are tolerant to fire is not substantiated by the results of this study. Due to the lack of spatial replication in this study, a comparison of avian response to fire in several sites across Gambel oak range would be desirable.

Book excerpt: We investigated the effects of different fire restoration treatments on five shrubsteppe bird species in the Great Basin of central Utah. Sagebrush communities and the associated avifauna are under particular threat due to changing fire regimes. Although fires are locally destructive, it is hypothesized that they improve habitat by increasing landscape-level heterogeneity. As long as fire follows a historic fire regime, the plant and animal communities can usually recover. However, fires can and often do burn outside of the normal regime. The Milford Flat Fire, which occurred in west-central Utah, was the largest wildfire recorded in the Great Basin. Considered catastrophic, concern existed that natural recovery of sagebrush and its avifauna would be unlikely. To prevent this, vegetation reseeding treatments were applied immediately post-fire. These treatments included two seed mix types, with or without a shrub component, and three mechanical applications, drill seeding, aerial seeding followed by chaining, and aerial seeding only. We surveyed the avian community in the different treatment types and in untreated areas within the fire using line transect distance sampling methods. Using a space for time substitution, we sampled nearby unburned areas as reference to represent pre-fire conditions. We hypothesized that the treatment areas would be more similar to the reference than the untreated areas, and that the treatments would all have similar effects. We found some effect on the presence and extirpation of the birds at the guild and overall bird level. We found no significant effect from the treatments on the five study species at the species level, and no effects on bird densities. The effects of the restoration treatments were overshadowed by the effect of the fire on changing the habitat, namely, the density of sagebrush. We saw a pattern of birds responding to the removal or survival of sagebrush and the treatments were insufficient in affecting a short term response.
