Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Isaac Babel, Dmitry Shostakovich, and Anna Akhmatova star in this series of portraits of some of the greatest writers, artists, and composers of the twentieth century. "We stopped and Shklovsky told me / quietly, but clearly, / 'Remember, we are on our way out. / On our way out.' And I recalled / ... the wall of books, / all written by a man / who lived / in times that were hard to bear." Lev Ozerov’s Portraits Without Frames offers fifty shrewd and moving glimpses into the lives of Soviet writers, composers, and artists caught between the demands of art and politics. Some of the subjects—like Anna Akhmatova, Isaac Babel, Andrey Platonov, and Dmitry Shostakovich—are well-known, others less so. All are evoked with great subtlety and vividness, as is the fraught and dangerous time in which they lived. Composed in free verse of deceptively artless simplicity, Ozerov’s portraits are like nothing else in Russian poetry.

All created uniquely powerful musical art that had a profound effect on their audiences. Through their music and their lives they became forces for liberation, challenging the established order and inspiring people around the world to look at life in new ways. So great was their originality that to a large extent they created their own musical genres, and listeners claim the music leads them to a higher state of being. Great Spirits: Portraits of Life-Changing World Music Artists presents personal encounters with some of the most interesting and important musical artists of the past fifty years--Bob Marley, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, Nina Simone, Sun Ra, Augustus Pablo, the Neville Brothers, Yabby You, and Nadia Gamal. Based on the author's meetings and interviews with these giants, the pieces reveal the unique essence of each musician as a person, as an artist, and as a force for social change. Spanning the realms of jazz, blues, reggae, gospel, African, and Middle Eastern music, these artists epitomize musical creation at its highest level.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Realm of Tones: Three Hundred and Two Portraits of the Most Celebrated European Musicians With Short Biographical Notices Thus, this work may serve the reader, even if he does not possess any special historical culture, as a short compendium of the history of music; at the same time, on account of its handy form, it will be a convenient book of reference and a welcome substitute for those voluminous dictionaries which treat of musical subjects at great length. The order in which the portraits follow each other, is not to be looked upon as of any categorical importance; in fact, headings, marking distinct paragraphs, have been intentionally omitted, for it is difficult to classify free artist-natures in music, the freest of all arts. In accordance with the general plan of the work, the portraits of the Italian artists are followed by those of the Germans, the French, the Scandinavians, and the English; the violinists, the pianists, the composers of operettas and rhythmical dances, the violoncellists, and the great stars of dramatic and lyric singing are classed together. This collection does not claim any degree of completeness; good and reliable portraits of many old masters were not obtainable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Steinway Collection of Paintings by American Artists: Together With Prose Portraits of the Great Composers Ric Frangois Chopin. She it was, even before Liszt, who interpreted his personality and music in her supple prose. The history of her life tells us of her sojourn on the Isle of Majorca with the sick, ner vous composer. It was at the deserted monastery of Valdemosa, which for him was full of terrors and phantoms, but only interesting to her more robust imagination. Often on returning from her nocturnal rambles with her children she would find him at the keyboard, pale, his eyes haggard, hair on end, unable to recognize them at once, and then, after an attempted smile, he would play sublime things, terrible, heart rending ideas that had obsessed him m his hours of sadness and solitude. Some are the visions of deceased monks and the sounds of funeral chants, which beset his fancy; others are sweet and melancholy - they came to him in the hours of sunshine and health, with the noise of the children's laughter under the window, the distant sound of guitars, the warbling of the birds among the humid foliage, and the sight of the pale, little roses on the snow. Others, again, are of a mournful character, and, while charming the ear, lacerate the heart. Thus George Sand, concerning those compositions modestly entitled by the composer, 'preludes. Of them Robert Schumann wrote: I must signalize them as most remarkable. I will confess I expected something quite different, carried out in the grand style of his studies. It is almost the contrary here 5 these are sketches, the beginnings of studies, on, if you will, ruins, the feathers of eagles, all strangely inter mingled. But in every piece we find in his own hand, Frederic Chopin wrote it. The Treludes were published In I 8 39, the same year of the trip.
