Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This account of European settlement in the modern state of Victoria, Australia, spans developments from the first convict camp established in 1803 on the Bass Strait to the contemporary separation of the district from New South Wales. Aborigines, whalers, adventurers, squatters, speculators, and immigrants figure into this history of Victoria before the gold rush. The stories of such key leaders as John Baton and John Pascoe Fawkner offer insight into the founding of Melbourne, the economic depression and recovery of the 19th century, and the social progress of the 20th century. Details are drawn from primary sources including correspondence between officials in Melbourne, Sydney, and London and newspapers from Batman, Swanston, the Port Phillip Association, and La Trobe.

Though approving of the soil for agriculture, and the country for sheep, he had his doubts about the region after walking for twenty miles without finding water. He alludes, however, to the survey of the port by Mr. Grimes, saying, " No runs of fresh water were seen in my excursions; but Mr. Charles Grimes, Surveyor-General of New South Wales, afterwards found several, and in particular a small river (the Yarra) falling into the northern head of the port. Mr. Grimes was sent by Governor King, in 1803, to walk round and survey the harbour; and from his plan I have completed my chart of Port Phillip." On that chart we see the Yarra distinctly marked. Mr. Surveyor Grimes Round The Bay, 1803. The journal of this exploration round Port Phillip Bay was not kept by the surveyor, Mr. Grimes, but by Mr. James Fleming, whose special duty was to note the agricultural qualities of the country. The journal appeared with two other early records at the expense of the Victorian Government in 1879, under the editorship of Mr. Shillinglaw, F.R.G.S., whose notes of places are appended. The Cumberland left Sydney with the party on November 23rd, 1802, and cruised about the islands of Bass's Strait, in search of a place for a new colony, by orders of Governor King. The result of such examination of King's Island is thus noted: "The best place for a settlement is either in Elephant Bay, or opposite New Year's Island; but as we saw little of the interior there are perhaps better places. The shore is in every place difficult of access for vessels." But we extract from the journal only that portion relating to the visit of Port Phillip...

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1856 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER V. THE SUCCESSFUL SETTLEMENT OF PORT PHILLIP, BATMAN AND Gellibrand's APPLICATION. The proximity of Western Port to Launceston, its readiness of access at all times, and its perfect safety, caused it to be well known tc the Strait traders; and, as sailors' descriptions are much influenced by their own impulsive character, and as their knowledge of the qualities of soils is not equal to their experience at the rudder, we easily comprehend why that district was long the fabled land of brilliant visions, --the hope and object of colonial enterprise, and why, like the apple of Sodom, in the moment of possession, its beauty and richnesschanged to worthlessness and disgust. Even before the settlement under captain Wright, in 1826, parties had contemplated a location in this Elysium. In about 1824, according to the information afforded the writer by Mr. Mclntyre, on the Yarra, three persons resident at the South Esk, Van Diemen's Land, formed an association to run sheep at Western Port. They were Messrs. Wm. Gray, of Avoca, Fielding and Forbes. The removal of the first named gentleman to India frustrated the design. Mr. John Gardiner, also one of our early colonists, mentions that the American Robinson, as he was called, gave much valuable information relative to various parts on our southern coast about the year 1827, and urgently recommended the occupation of so fine a country. The first private individuals who sought, in a proper and legitimate manner, to establish themselves on our shores were Joseph Tice Gellibrand and John Batman. The former was Ex-Attorney-General of Van Diemen's Land; a man greatly interested in the subject, and to whom, in fact, much of the merit of ultimate success in the colonization of Port Phillip maybe..

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Records of Port Phillip: The First Annals of the Colony of Victoria The documents now submitted to you may fairly be called the First Annals of this colony. They are important as being official records, and they set at rest some points which have hitherto been in dispute or doubt regarding the settlement attempted by Governor Collins at Port Phillip Heads three quarters of a century ago. As you have thought these early historical mss. Worthy of national publication, I have compressed in the form of a Prefatory Note a few facts necessary to the illustration of their character and value, and showing how they were brought to light. I take leave to add that when future writers of Australian history come to tell the story of that marvellous national career which in less than fifty years has transformed a coast whaling-station and a few turf huts on the banks of an unnamed river into the noble Province of Victoria, they will not fail to recognize the public spirit which has induced you to preserve these memorials of an earlier attempt at its colonization, which, happily for us all, came to nought.
