Book Synopsis World-Regional Social Policy and Global Governance by : Bob Deacon
Download or read book World-Regional Social Policy and Global Governance written by Bob Deacon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-12-04 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the case for and the prospects of the development of world-regional social policies as integral elements of a pluralistic, equitable and effective system of global governance. Focusing on transnational regionalism, this book examines the trajectory and crossing over of the three strands of scholarly analysis within the past decade which have given rise to this volume: the perceived negative impact of neo-liberal globalisation upon national social policy; the need for but the difficulty of securing reforms in the institutions of global social governance; and the increasing salience of the world-regional level of governance in handling cross-border issues. The authors develop an intellectual and research agenda that will also inform the political development of an international programme concerned with the social policy dimensions of regional governance. Combining the perspectives and collective expertise of a team of international scholars and activists, the book features: Theoretical and policy cases for a focus on regionalism and social policy A mapping and analysis of social policy dimensions of regional integration processes and formations in four continents An assessment of the regional dimensions of global agencies, in particular of the UN (ILO, WHO, UNESCO, UNDP) including the approach to regional social policy of the UN Regional Economic Commissions and Development Banks An articulation of a multi-levelled conceptualisation of global social governance within which regional associations of countries plays a significant part. The book will be of interest to students and scholars of social policy, development studies, international relations and political science, especially those focused on the public policy dimensions of globalisation, regionalisation and international development.

Book Synopsis Ageing in the Asia-Pacific Region by : David R. Phillips
Download or read book Ageing in the Asia-Pacific Region written by David R. Phillips and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-11-01 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 2004. The Asia-Pacific region is now clearly witnessing the rapid ageing of many of its nations and Asia is already the region with, relatively, the largest number of older persons. This book focuses on the challenges that this demographic trend poses to economies and societies in the region, and the policies that have evolved to date to meet new demands. It looks forward over the coming decades to consider how societies and economies will deal with ageing and the necessary structural and behavioural changes that this will entail. The book is organized into two main sections. The first introduces the key features, demography, research and long-term care issues of the region, and provides region-wide context and analysis. The second section offers in-depth case studies of thirteen countries, including China, Japan, Korea and Indonesia. As well as providing a wealth of original research material, the book also offers valuable comparative analysis: while the larger economies have had to develop policies to maintain their social and economic successes in the face of demographic ageing, developing countries must find ways to build their economies around an ageing population. With contributors drawn from a range of academic and professional disciplines, including many practising social gerontologists, this book will be of interest to scholars in economics, sociology, social policy, health policy, politics and development studies. With its particular emphasis on the future, it will also be an essential reference for anybody with a professional interest in policy-making in the region.

Download or read book The International Law of Youth Rights written by Jorge Cardona and published by Hotei Publishing. This book was released on 2015-02-04 with total page 1959 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1996 William Angel launched a unique, pioneering study tracing the origin, growth and basic features of the international law of youth rights. It consisted of both source documents and commentary on the historical trends to elaborate and codify international instruments and standards in this field, as well as action taken by governmental, intergovernmental, and non-governmental organizations to promote and protect youth rights. It concluded with a call for a new international instrument and monitoring machinery to better promote and protect the rights of youth on a global basis. The aim of the current revised, updated and expanded edition of this ground-breaking work is twofold. First, to preserve and update the landmark historical research undertaken by William Angel and present it to today’s audience. Second, to introduce up-to-date analysis of the state of the International Law of Youth Rights and to provide an easy-to-use compilation of sources of law for researchers and practitioners active in this field. This important collection will provide a roadmap for readers to finding the various sources of the International Law of Youth Rights and a reference point for the most relevant legal documents in force. It aims to spark further legal, political and sociological research in the academic field, as well as support even stronger advocacy actions to further the rights of young people. Two volume set.
