Book excerpt: Polymer/inorganic interfaces play a fundamental role in a wide range of applications, yet understanding of the fundamental interactions between polymers and inorganic phases, and how they affect the strength and durability of the interface, is still in its infancy. This proceedings volume addresses various aspects of polymer/inorganic interfaces, including surface preparation and treatment, characterization and interface performance. In addition, applications where the interface and its properties play a significant role, such as in biointerfaces, microelectronics, polymer composites and interpenetrating polymer networks, are discussed. Contributions to the volume examine various inorganic material/polymer interfaces with an emphasis on composites, epoxy resins, polyurethanes, poly(methyl methacrylate), polysiloxanes and various hydrophilic polymers. These are arranged in seven units that identify major research efforts in specific fields. They include: experimental probes of interfaces; biointeractions and biointerfaces; adhesion and interface durability; interface characterization; primers for interface preparation; interfaces and composites and surface preparation.

Book excerpt: This volume addresses various aspects of polymer/inorganic interfaces, such as surface preparation and treatment, characterization, and performance of interfaces. In addition, it also discusses applications where the interface and its properties play a significant role, such as biointerfaces, microelectronics, polymer composites, and interpenetrating polymer networks. Tailoring surface properties of substrates, and hence interfaces, involves both the use of self assembled monolayers and tethered copolymers (brushes) for controlling surface energy, lubricity, biocompatibility, adhesion, and topography. Polymeric brushes have the ability to modify their morphology as the solvent strength or pH changes. Primers influence adhesion of polymers to metals either by altering the chemical interactions which form reactive species that hasten chemical bonding or altering acid base interactions, or by altering the mechanical performance, such as tensile strength and viscoelastic properties of that primer coating.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hybrid organic-inorganic materials and the rational design of their interfaces open up the access to a wide spectrum of functionalities not achievable with traditional concepts of materials science. This innovative class of materials has a major impact in many application domains such as optics, electronics, mechanics, energy storage and conversion, protective coatings, catalysis, sensing and nanomedicine. The properties of these materials do not only depend on the chemical structure, and the mutual interaction between their nano-scale building blocks, but are also strongly influenced by the interfaces they share. This handbook focuses on the most recent investigations concerning the design, control, and dynamics of hybrid organic-inorganic interfaces, covering: (i) characterization methods of interfaces, (ii) innovative computational approaches and simulation of interaction processes, (iii) in-situ studies of dynamic aspects controlling the formation of these interfaces, and (iv) the role of the interface for process optimization, devices, and applications in such areas as optics, electronics, energy and medicine.

Book excerpt: The first book on the topic, and written by the founder of the technique, this comprehensive resource provides a detailed overview of sum-frequency spectroscopy, its fundamental principles, and the wide range of applications for surfaces, interfaces, and bulk. Beginning with an overview of the historical context, and introductions to the basic theory of nonlinear optics and surface sum-frequency generation, topics covered include discussion of different experimental arrangements adopted by researchers, notes on proper data analysis, an up-to-date survey commenting on the wide range of successful applications of the tool, and a valuable insight into current unsolved problems and potential areas to be explored in the future. With the addition of chapter appendices that offer the opportunity for more in-depth theoretical discussion, this is an essential resource that integrates all aspects of the subject and is ideal for anyone using, or interested in using, sum-frequency spectroscopy.

Book excerpt: The prolific use of polymer/inorganic interfaces in emerging technologies necessitates a complete understanding of interface failure mechanisms, especially with respect to the effects of environment and interface chemistry. Motivated by an observed anomalous debonding phenomenon along the interface between a diglycidyl ether of bisphenol F (bisphenol F) epoxy polymer layer and a silicon nitride film, this work addresses debonding mechanisms and their relationship to interface chemistry, moisture diffusion, and mechanical fatigue. Weak interfacial bonding, suggested by low measured adhesion values, facilitates the stress-dependent transport mechanism that produces the anomalous behavior. A new model is developed to describe the effect of moisture diffusion through the polymer layer and ∼1 mum ahead of the debond tip where, upon sufficient accumulation of water molecules at the interface, weak interfacial hydrogen bonds are displaced, resulting in an insidious debond growth mechanism that occurs under both monotonic and cyclic loading. Moisture diffusion rates, and hence debond growth rates in this stress-dependent transport region, were moderated by blending organosilane molecules, namely amino, glycidoxy, and methacryloxy silanes, into the bisphenol F polymer layer. While only slight changes in layer mechanical properties and mechanical fatigue response were observed, significant effects on adhesion were observed to correlate with diffusion of blended organosilanes to the interface, which was driven by compatibility between organofunctional and epoxy moieties. By confining the organosilane molecules to the interface, a dramatic effect on adhesion and subcritical (amino) and discontinuous (glycidoxy, methacryloxy) silane layers stayed the stress-dependent transport mechanism, which was replaced by debond growth rate threshold behavior. Where the silane layer was discontinuous, debonding occurred along the bisphenol F/silicon nitride interface between silane islands and otherwise along the bisphenol F/silane interface, resulting in a characteristic stick-slip behavior that translated into negligible susceptibility of these systems to moisture attack under monotonic loading. Alternatively, where the silane layer was continuous the debonding mechanism is approached using a more traditional kinetic analysis. These effects, as well as the resultant threshold region mechanical fatigue behavior, have important implications for interface integrity approached from a defect tolerance perspective.

Book excerpt: Polymeric materials are used for a legion of applications in a wide array of technological areas, and their proper surface/interface characteristics are of cardinal importance for their applications. Therefore, the need to characterize polymer surfaces/interfaces and their suitable modification to impart desired characteristics is quite patent. This book chronicles the proceedings of the Symposium on Polymer Surfaces and Interfaces: Characterization, Modification and Application held as a part of the Society of Plastics Engineers Annual Technical Conference, Boston, May 7--11, 1995. The articles in this book address many aspects of polymer surfaces and interfaces. Topics covered include: various ways (chemical, photochemical, laser, flame, corona) to modify polymer surfaces; modification of contact lens surfaces; various ways to analyze/characterize polymer surfaces; metal/polymer interfaces; metal/polyimide adhesion; metal/self-assembled organic monolayer interfaces; polymer alignment layers for liquid crystals; alignment of liquid crystal surfaces; polyimide alignment layers; molecular re-orientation of polymer surfaces; plasma polymerized organic coatings; epoxy/fiber interphase; epoxy underfill materials for packaging integrated circuits; transport in polymers; polymer miscibility; and cell adhesion.
