Büchner war Gegner der alten, durch die Restauration geschaffene Ordnung und arbeitete angesichts der Not der hessischen Landbevölkerung mit auf einen Umsturz hin. Weiter schreibt er: "Das Leben der Vornehmen ist ein langer Sonntag: Sie wohnen in schönen Häusern, sie tragen zierliche Kleider, haben feiste Gesichter und reden eine eigene Sprache; das Volk aber liegt vor ihnen wie Dünger auf dem Acker. Der Bauer geht hinter dem Pflug, der Vornehme aber geht hinter ihm und dem Pflug und treibt ihn mit den Ochsen am Pflug, er nimmt das Korn und lässt ihm die Stoppeln. Das Leben des Bauern ist ein langer Werktag; Fremde verzehren seine Äcker vor seinen Augen, sein Leib ist eine Schwiele, sein Schweiß ist das Salz auf dem Tische des Vornehmen."2 Eine klare Dichotomie bestimmt Büchners Zeilen: Der Vornehme und das Volk. Die Regierenden und die Regierten, die Ausbeuter und die Ausgebeuteten. Diese Lage gab den Anstoß und Anlaß für die Sektion 'Soziologische Theorien', im Oktober 1985 in Bremen eine Tagung mit dem The ma 'Soziologische Theorien der Ungleichheit' durchzuführen. Mit dieser Tagung sollte· - ausgehend vom neuesten Entwick lungsstand klassischer Positionen - einerseits die Debatte um aktuelle Beiträge der Ungleichheitsforschung auf der Seite der soziologischen Theorie aufgenommen und fortgeführt, an dererseits sollten aber auch neue allgemeine Theorieansätze zur Erklärung und Analyse sozialer Ungleichheit angeregt wer den. While transnational migration studies have documented migrants’ cross-border activities there have been few empirically grounded efforts to theorise these developments in the framework of integration and status theory. Based on a case study of Ghanaian migrants, this book seeks to understand integration processes and develops a theorem of the status paradox of migration which explores the interaction between migrants’ integration into the receiving country and the maintained inclusion into the sending society. It describes a characteristic problem for a large class of labour migrants from the global south who gain status in the sending countries by simultaneously losing it in the receiving countries of migration. This transnational dynamic of status attainment, which goes along with specifically national forms of status inconsistency, is what is called the status paradox of migration. By bringing together two modes of national status incorporation within one framework, the status paradox provides an innovative perspective on migration processes and demonstrates the usefulness of a transnationalist integration theory. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of migration, transnationalism, politics, sociology and anthropology.
