Book Synopsis Towards Africa-oriented Risk Analysis Models by : Korwa Gombe Adar
Download or read book Towards Africa-oriented Risk Analysis Models written by Korwa Gombe Adar and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2008 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Risk analysis studies on Africa conducted by a number of international organisations have addressed a number of complex and interlocking socioeconomic and political issues, largely painting a bleak picture of the continent. These reports have been used by the Western countries as benchmarks for the flow of donor funds, often with disastrous consequences. The failure of the Structural Adjustment Programmes (SAPs) introduced by the Bretton Woods institutions in the 1970s and 1980s serve as a good example. Taking cognisance of these interpretations, the case studies in this volume have employed appropriate methodological, conceptual and theoretical approaches with the objective of reaching balanced assessments on the underlying principles of risk and threat in Africa. The authors take a more holistic view, clearly defining the concept of risk and its corollaries and going beyond the somewhat limited view of those organisations which apply largely Eurocentric values to their assessments.

Book Synopsis Measuring Political Risk by : Charlotte H. Brink
Download or read book Measuring Political Risk written by Charlotte H. Brink and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offering a fresh, transparent approach encompassing new material, this invigorating volume measures political risk - for instance the risk that foreign investment might face in any country. It also demonstrates how progress or regress made in good governance initiatives as conditionalities to aid can be assessed. Governments can monitor their own policy environment(s), and take remedial action if necessary. The methodology allows for measurement of previously un-quantified 'soft' factors that add to the risks foreign investors might face, demonstrating why these factors are of importance to both risk assertive and risk averse investors. Features include: - 103 contextualized, measurable risk factors and their 411 risk factor indicators. - Guidelines to using these factors in order to perform generic macro analyses, or micro, client/project/industry-specific analyses. - Explanation of the methodology with which to comprehensively measure the probability of risk occurring in any macro or micro investment climate.

Download or read book Risk and Africa written by Lena Bloemertz and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2012 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through a range of articles, this book explores the changing nature of risk in contemporary African societies. It provides a valuable addition to the current debate on the concept of risk, which has traditionally been skewed in favor of a European historical experience. The contributions illustrate that technological hazards, pollution, and climate change - as well as the introduction of new forms of insurance and the restructuring of civil society - are just some of the recent developments that invite us to be skeptical of prevailing notions of risk in the African context. The reader is encouraged to move away from focusing on the vulnerability of Africa as a pre-modern society to consider more localized and contemporary perspectives of risk. In exploring new ways of conceptualizing risk in Africa, the book addresses the challenge of making theoretical and methodological advances in risk research relevant to understanding the processes of social change on the continent. Book Synopsis A Short Guide to Political Risk by : Robert McKellar
Download or read book A Short Guide to Political Risk written by Robert McKellar and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a competitive and increasingly internationalised business world, many companies rely on the high risk/reward ratio of operating in unstable areas. Those companies willing to engage in emerging or developing countries can often be exposed to a politically volatile environment over which they have little control. Political risk, therefore, is one of the most hazardous challenges that an international business can face. In A Short Guide to Political Risk you will find a business-centric introduction to political risk that will familiarise international managers with the concept and accelerate the learning curve towards proficient and coherent political risk management. Robert McKellar explores: the key political risks that companies have faced in the recent past, and current trends in the evolution of the political risk landscape; the concept of political risk and its constituent elements; models and approaches for assessing political risk; the principal options for managing political risk, and suggestions for organisational structures to ensure a coherent and consistent approach; as well as wider issues that a company needs to consider in developing its own attitude and philosophy on political risk. A Short Guide to Political Risk is an essential introductory guide for risk managers and for all senior managers concerned with their organisation's global performance and reputation.

Download or read book Investment and Risk in Africa written by Paul Collier and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together academics in the fields of economics, political science, and law, with business practitioners in the fields of risk assessment and portfolio management. Their contributions are sequenced to tell a story. Africa is perceived as being a highly risky continent. As a result, investment is discouraged. These risks are partly exaggerated. However, to the extent that they reflect genuine problems, they are capable of being mitigated by insurance and reduced by political restraints such as central banks, investment charters, and international agreements.

Book Synopsis Political Risks Facing African Democracies by : Michael Bratton
Download or read book Political Risks Facing African Democracies written by Michael Bratton and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where are African countries headed politically? How resilient are Africa's governments, regimes, and states? What are the characteristics of political risk? This paper is motivated by a desire to discover whether it is possible to identify early-warning indicators of risk to African political systems. We suggest that Afrobarometer survey data may be used to systematically track trends in mass political support, such as approval for incumbent governments, satisfaction with political regime performance, and the popular legitimacy of state institutions. Where trends in dimensions of popular disapproval turn sharply upward, we infer increasing political risk. The paper is anchored empirically with 15 years' worth of public opinion data for selected African countries and offers interpretations of what these observations might mean. The analysis is both retrospective, connecting empirical trends to known episodes of instability in Mali, Kenya, and Zimbabwe, and prospective, raising red flags for countries like Ghana, among others, once considered stable but currently facing new political strains.

Book Synopsis Tectonic Politics by : Nigel Gould-Davies
Download or read book Tectonic Politics written by Nigel Gould-Davies and published by Chatham House Insights. This book was released on 2019 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Political risk now affects more markets and countries than ever before and that risk will continue to rise. But traditional methods of managing political risk are no longer legitimate or effective. In Tectonic Politics, Nigel Gould-Davies explores the complex, shifting landscape of political risk and how to navigate it. He analyses trends in each form of political risk: the power to destroy, seize, regulate, and tax. He shows how each of these forms reflects a deeper transformation of the global political economy that is reordering the relationship between power, wealth, and values. In a world where everything is political, the craft of engagement is as important as the science of production and the art of the deal. The successful company must integrate that craft--the engager's way of seeing and doing--into strategy and culture. Drawing on a career in academia, business, and diplomacy, Gould-Davies provides corporate leaders, scholars, and engaged citizens with a groundbreaking study of the fastest-rising political risk today. "As tectonic plates shape the earth," he writes, "so tectonic politics forges its governance."
