Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first mass political parties appeared in the United States in the 1830's, as the majority of adult white males identified ardently with the Democratic and Whig parties. Ronald Formisano opens a window on American political culture in this case study of antebellum voting and party formation in Michigan. Examining the social bases of voter commitment and the dynamics of grass roots loyalties from Jackson to Lincoln, he proposes that the forming of parties had little to do with issues of political economy, but rather with value conflicts generated by the evangelicals' promotion of a moral society. Borrowing from other disciplines, and elaborating some of the analytical techniques used by Lee Benson in The Concept of Jacksonian Democracy, Professor Formisano studies demographic and voting data to determine patterns of partisan loyalty. His study throws light on the roots of the modern Republican Party, links between religion and politics, and the role of ethnic and cultural loyalties in political life. Originally published in 1971. This book was released on 1991 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an integrated theoretical perspective for explaining political party operations. Schlesinger examines the distinctive structure of the party organization, the nature of its collective outputs, and the direct and indirect rewards it offers participants. He also develops the impact of political ambitions and the structure of political opportunities and electoral arrangements on party capabilities. Schlesinger concludes by looking at the "changing multinuclear party" and the implications of his theory for comparative research. The comparative potential of the theory is demonstrated through the construction of a typology of parties based on officeholders' age and career paths for five Western democracies. Book excerpt: Presents a brilliant, persuasive case that American political parties, so often dismissed as immature or ineffective compared with their European counterparts, are in fact old and durable political organizations, serving well the needs of a pluralistic society. What chiefly distinguishes this work is the inclusion of considerable material on American parties in a comparative context to the analysis of British, Scandinavian, European, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand political parties.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " The South continues to be the most distinctive region in American politics. Over the last half century, Democratic dominance in the South has given way to the emergence of a truly competitive two-party system that leans Republican in presidential elections. In some ways, the region is increasingly like the rest of the country, yet even the degree of change and the speed with which it occurred give the South a distinctive air. The contributors to Southern Political Party Activists examine both the development of American political party organizations and the changing political character of the South, focusing on grassroots party activists-those who are involved in party organizations at the county level. John A. Clark is associate professor of political science at Western Michigan University. Charles L. Prysby is professor of political science at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
