Book Synopsis The Isle of Pines, 1668 by : John Scheckter
Download or read book The Isle of Pines, 1668 written by John Scheckter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A short fiction of shipwreck and discovery written by the politician Henry Neville (1620-1694), The Isle of Pines is only beginning to draw critical attention, and until now no scholarly edition of the work has appeared. In the first full-length study of The Isle of Pines, supported by the first fully critical edition, John Scheckter discloses how Neville's work offers a critique of scientific discourse, enacts complicated engagements of race and gender, and interrogates the methods and consequences of European exploration. The volume offers a new critical model for applying post-colonial and postmodern examination strategies to an early modern work. Scheckter argues that the structure and publication history of the fiction, with its separate, unreliable narrators, along with its several topics-shipwreck survival, the founding of a new society, the initial phases of European colonization-are imbued with the sense of uncertainty that permeated the era.

Book Synopsis From Oikonomia to Political Economy by : Germano Maifreda
Download or read book From Oikonomia to Political Economy written by Germano Maifreda and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renaissance Europe witnessed a surge of interest in new scientific ideas and theories. Whilst the study of this 'Scientific Revolution' has dramatically shifted our appreciation of many facets of the early-modern world, remarkably little attention has been paid to its influence upon one key area; that of economics. Through an interrogation of the relationship between economic and scientific developments in early-modern Western Europe, this book demonstrates how a new economic epistemology appeared that was to have profound consequences both at the time, and for subsequent generations. Dr Maifreda argues that the new attention shown by astronomers, physicians, aristocrats, men of letters, travellers and merchants for the functioning of economic life and markets, laid the ground for a radically new discourse that envisioned 'economics' as an independent field of scientific knowledge. By researching the historical context surrounding this new field of knowledge, he identifies three key factors that contributed to the cultural construction of economics. Firstly, Italian Humanism and Renaissance, which promoted new subjects, methods and quantitative analysis. Secondly, European overseas expansion, which revealed the existence of economic cultures previously unknown to Europeans. Thirdly factor identified is the fifteenth- and sixteenth-century crisis of traditional epistemologies, which increasingly valued empirical scientific knowledge over long-held beliefs. Based on a wide range of published and archival sources, the book illuminates new economic sensibilities within a range of established and more novel scientific disciplines (including astronomy, physics, ethnography, geology, and chemistry/alchemy). By tracing these developments within the wider social and cultural fields of everyday commercial life, the study offers a fascinating insight into the relationship between economic knowledge and science during the early-modern period.
Book Synopsis British Sociologists and French 'Sociologues' in the Interwar Years by : Baudry Rocquin
Download or read book British Sociologists and French 'Sociologues' in the Interwar Years written by Baudry Rocquin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-01-04 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comparative study of the development of sociology in Britain and France between 1920 and 1940, taking a broad definition of the discipline to examine divergence across the channel in the interwar years. Rocquin charts the tension between differing schools of thought, presenting an alternative history of Europe based on cultural and intellectual struggle, and variation in theoretical visions of society - a divide that is still crucial in understanding the present situation between Continental Europe and the United Kingdom. This is a compelling addition to the history of sociology, and will be of interest to students and scholars across history, historical sociology, politics, European studies, and the sociology of knowledge.
Book Synopsis Mississippian Political Economy by : Jon Muller
Download or read book Mississippian Political Economy written by Jon Muller and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ambitious work offers a coherent and comprehensive look at the material conditions underlying and stimulating political development in southeastern North America during the Mississippian period. After introducing theoretical issues, Muller addresses reproduction, production, distribution, and consumption within their social and material contexts. Examined through the lens of the production, distribution, and consumption of prestige and staple goods, a profoundly domestic, though significantly differentiated, Mississippian political economy emerges. This study's broad synthetic view ensures that neither environment nor ideology are overemphasized. A fine statement of an important theoretical position, the volume features considerable graphic and tabular presentation of data.
Book Synopsis Objectifying China, Imagining America by : Caroline Frank
Download or read book Objectifying China, Imagining America written by Caroline Frank and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the ever-expanding presence of China in the global economy, Americans more and more look east for goods and trade. But as Caroline Frank reveals, this is not a new development. China loomed as large in the minds—and account books—of eighteenth-century Americans as it does today. Long before they had achieved independence from Britain and were able to sail to Asia themselves, American mariners, merchants, and consumers were aware of the East Indies and preparing for voyages there. Focusing on the trade and consumption of porcelain, tea, and chinoiserie, Frank shows that colonial Americans saw themselves as part of a world much larger than just Britain and Europe Frank not only recovers the widespread presence of Chinese commodities in early America and the impact of East Indies trade on the nature of American commerce, but also explores the role of the this trade in American state formation. She argues that to understand how Chinese commodities fueled the opening acts of the Revolution, we must consider the power dynamics of the American quest for china—and China—during the colonial period. Filled with fresh and surprising insights, this ambitious study adds new dimensions to the ongoing story of America’s relationship with China.
