Esta práctica estaría llamada a convertirse en un denominador común para los distintos territorios durante un intervalo temporal que abarca {u2013}al menos- desde la mitad del siglo XII y hasta las primeras décadas del siglo XVI. A la vista de estas consideraciones, podría pensarse que hablamos de un conjunto de técnicas sobradamente familiares para la historia del arte. Sin embargo, es un hecho que el conocimiento actual de las policromías sobre piedra se ha visto ralentizado -tanto a nivel popular como técnico-científico- por la interacción de un conjunto de factores de origen diverso. Habremos de esperar hasta la segunda mitad del siglo XX para asistir a una verdadera toma de conciencia de la importancia histórica del color para la piedra medieval, proceso que ha venido de la mano de las campañas de conservación y restauración. Este redescubrimiento de la policromía sobre piedra cambia radicalmente nuestra percepción de los monumentos medievales y deja claro que nuestro conocimiento de los mismos ha sido, durante años, incompleto. Atendiendo a estas cuestiones, proponemos un estudio global {u2013}histórico y tecnológico- de las policromías sobre piedra del periodo medieval. Pretendemos así definir los aspectos que condicionaron la implantación y desarrollo de estas técnicas, así como aquellos que motivaron tanto su olvido histórico como su reciente recuperación. Entendemos que la toma en consideración de todos estos elementos por parte de los agentes involucrados en la salvaguarda del patrimonio puede contribuir a una mejor toma de decisiones de cara a enfocar las actuaciones de conservación y restauración de las policromías sobre piedra de nuestros monumentos.

Within each cultural framework, characteristics are observable that suggest various reasons for the use of colour in sculpture. These encompass local preferences, customs or cultural requirements; and others point to an impulse to enhance the expression of the phenomenal. Whether colour is really necessary or even essential to sculpted works of art is a question especially pertinent since the Renaissance. Surface finishes of sculptural representations may allude to the sensory world of colour without even having pigment applied to them. What makes polychromy so special is that it functions as an overlay of another dimension that sometimes carries further encoded meaning. In nature, the colour is integral to the given object. What the present survey suggests is that the relationship between colour and sculpture is a matter of intentional expression, even where the colour is intrinsic – as in the sculptor’s materials.

Coverage within each section is exhaustive. Thirteen pages are devoted to items related to linseed oil; eleven to the history and physical and chemical properties of pigments; two to artificial ultramarine blue; eleven to wood; and so on with hundreds of entries. Much of the information — physical behavior, earliest known use, chemical composition, history of synthesis, refractive index, etc. — is difficult to find elsewhere. The rest was drawn from such a wide range of fields and from such a long span of time that the book was immediately hailed as the best organized, most accessible work of its kind. That reputation hasn't changed. The author's new preface lists some recent discoveries regarding pigments and other materials and the pigment composition chart has been revised, but the text remains essentially unchanged. It is still invaluable not only for museum curators and conservators for whom it was designed, but for painters themselves and for teachers and students as well.

Although they were common across the Latin West, surviving examples are spread very unevenly over Europe. Most of the c. 500 preserved tabernacle shrines are found in Central Italy, Northern Spain, across Germany, and particularly in Scandinavia. More than one-third of the total European stock is preserved in Sweden, making it the only country where the entire development of such 'Helgonskåp' ('saints' cupboards') can still be gleaned. Departing from the Swedish wealth, this study explores the tabernacle shrine as a European phenomenon in medieval art. The first chapters distinguish and analyse seven different types of tabernacle shrine, while the last sections focus on the object type as an artistic category, as a physical object in medieval church space, and on its remarkable survival in Lutheran Sweden.
