Book excerpt: This is a reprint of The Complete Book of Police and Military Motorcycles originally published in 2001. From Pittsburgh's adoption of motorcycles for police use in 1909 to General John J. "Black Jack" Pershing's motorized pursuit of Pancho Villa into Mexican territory in 1916 to the deployment of motorcycles in both world wars, this book tells the fascinating tale of these magnificent machines from their 20th century beginnings to their current use by police departments and militaries throughout the world.Joseph Berk explores the history of their manufacture by Harley-Davidson, Kawasaki, BMW, and others, from marketing strategy to product evolution. In addition, he gives the reader an exclusive inside look at how specific police departments from Atlanta to Los Angeles determine which make and model to adopt, complete with critiques of the "Big Three" police models used in the United States from officerswho have put them to the test. Berk's detailed look at the intensive 10-day training program LAPD motor officers undergo is a testament to the carefully honed, specialized skills motor officers bring to their work, and lively discussions with individual officers about how they put their machines to work on the streets on a day-to-day basis offer a unique personalized perspective. Completing the picture, Berk examines the use of motorcycles in combat, detailing the specific makes and models used by Special Forces and other military units from World War I through the turn of the century and beyond.

Book Synopsis Police Corruption by : Maurice Punch
Download or read book Police Corruption written by Maurice Punch and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Policing and corruption are inseparable. This book argues that corruption is not one thing but covers many deviant and criminal practices in policing which also shift over time. It rejects the 'bad apple' metaphor and focuses on 'bad orchards', meaning not individual but institutional failure. For in policing the organisation, work and culture foster can encourage corruption. This raises issues as to why do police break the law and, crucially, 'who controls the controllers'? Corruption is defined in a broad, multi-facetted way. It concerns abuse of authority and trust; and it takes serious form in conspiracies to break the law and to evade exposure when cops can become criminals. Attention is paid to typologies of corruption (with grass-eaters, meat-eaters, noble-cause); the forms corruption takes in diverse environments; the pathways officers take into corruption and their rationalisations; and to collusion in corruption from within and without the organization. Comparative analyses are made of corruption, scandal and reform principally in the USA, UK and the Netherlands. The work examines issues of control, accountability and the new institutions of oversight. It provides a fresh, accessible overview of this under-researched topic for students, academics, police and criminal justice officials and members of oversight agencies.

Book Synopsis Police, Power, and the Production of Racial Boundaries by : Ana Muñiz
Download or read book Police, Power, and the Production of Racial Boundaries written by Ana Muñiz and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2015-08-03 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on five years of ethnography, archival research, census data analysis, and interviews, Police, Power, and the Production of Racial Boundaries reveals how the LAPD, city prosecutors, and business owners struggled to control who should be considered “dangerous” and how they should be policed in Los Angeles. Sociologist Ana Muñiz shows how these influential groups used policies and everyday procedures to criminalize behaviors commonly associated with blacks and Latinos and to promote an exceedingly aggressive form of policing. Muñiz illuminates the degree to which the definitions of “gangs” and “deviants” are politically constructed labels born of public policy and court decisions, offering an innovative look at the process of criminalization and underscoring the ways in which a politically powerful coalition can define deviant behavior. As she does so, Muñiz also highlights the various grassroots challenges to such policies and the efforts to call attention to their racist effects. Muñiz describes the fight over two very different methods of policing: community policing (in which the police and the community work together) and the “broken windows” or “zero tolerance” approach (which aggressively polices minor infractions—such as loitering—to deter more serious crime). Police, Power, and the Production of Racial Boundaries also explores the history of the area to explain how Cadillac-Corning became viewed by outsiders as a “violent neighborhood” and how the city’s first gang injunction—a restraining order aimed at alleged gang members—solidified this negative image. As a result, Muñiz shows, Cadillac-Corning and other sections became a test site for repressive practices that eventually spread to the rest of the city.
Download or read book No More Police written by Mariame Kaba and published by The New Press. This book was released on 2022-08-30 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An instant national best seller A persuasive primer on police abolition from two veteran organizers “One of the world’s most prominent advocates, organizers and political educators of the [abolitionist] framework.” —NBCNews.com on Mariame Kaba In this powerful call to action, New York Times bestselling author Mariame Kaba and attorney and organizer Andrea J. Ritchie detail why policing doesn’t stop violence, instead perpetuating widespread harm; outline the many failures of contemporary police reforms; and explore demands to defund police, divest from policing, and invest in community resources to create greater safety through a Black feminist lens. Centering survivors of state, interpersonal, and community-based violence, and highlighting uprisings, campaigns, and community-based projects, No More Police makes a compelling case for a world where the tools required to prevent, interrupt, and transform violence in all its forms are abundant. Part handbook, part road map, No More Police calls on us to turn away from systems that perpetrate violence in the name of ending it toward a world where violence is the exception, and safe, well-resourced and thriving communities are the rule.
