Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poland and the Poles My book is based on a study of Poland extending over many years and on personal contact with the Poles during five years' residence in the country. I have attempted to give an unprejudiced account of the Poles and to combat some of the false ideas that are current, inspired by the enemies of the Polish people. A book of this kind cannot be written as a continuous narrative, and must inevitably be a series of essays, in which certain facts are often repeated from different points of view. In Polish proper names I have kept the original forms except for the transliteration of the nasal vowels into on and en. I have used the accepted English forms of the names of well-known towns, such as Warsaw, Cracow, Lemberg, Vilna and Dantzig, but I see no reason to change the Polish name of Poznan into the German form, Posen. The rapid changes in the position of Poland, while I have been writing the book, have made my task difficult. When I began to write, Poland was overrun by the German armies. When I finished, Poland was an independent State. Moreover, my actual knowledge of recent events was scanty, so that the last chapter does not purport to be a final summary of the period, but a mere sketch to bring my book up to date. I have tried, so far as I could, to avoid controversial topics. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poland the Knight Among Nations Americans know very little of the real Poland. Most of them have read Thaddeus of Warsaw, but this Thaddeus was not the real Kosciuszko. He was not even a real Pole - only a creature of the author's imagination. Since Sienkiewicz wrote his Trilogy, Americans have known more. They have much still to learn, for with all her faults, there is much in Poland, with her history, her literature, her art, and her unfortunate peo ple, which Americans ought to know. I am glad this excellent book has been written. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Knout: A Tale of Poland "Some two years ago," says the New York Freeman's Journal "we recollect, that, in explaining what kind of stories Catholics might read with safety, if not with profit, we instanced the Polish story of "The Knout" perceiving that its principles and sentiments were such as Catholic faith inspires. We have thought, therefore, that we could furnish our readers with no piece of light literature more entertaining and instructive than a good and spirited translation of "The Knout." Whether the translation is "good and spirited" we cannot pretend to say, but it is now offered to the public precisely as it appeared in the columns of the New York Freeman's Journal, with the additional advantage of a careful revision by the translator. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches in Poland When the world that we had lived in passed away, and when the people that we were four months ago had suddenly died, and we stood like newly-incarnated souls and Shuddered, though not with fear, on the verge of a new world, then we saw, astonished, that we were still holding In our hands some things we had brought with us out of that past life they were changed, perhaps, by the Shock of fire, but they had not perished, and among them are belief in certain rights and duties, and pity for certain wrongs. Therefore I make bold to Show what I carried with me out of that former time. It is the story Of my journey in Poland, the country that was lying captive while all we lived at ease, the nation that had no future while we were making progress, that now in our days Of peril turns towards us in friendliness and hope, Poland who comes in the midst Of death to a new birth, who will live, we believe, even as we shall, in freedom in the new age of mankind. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principal Features of the History and Literature of Poland The memory of every Pole cannot but cling with the warmest attachment to the broken shadow of the departed Friend 'of the cause of their country, whose' love of justice, humanity, and freedom, gave a lofty character to his long ezer tions on behalf of the Oppressed and the unfortunate. The simple mention of Poland wakes almost imme diately the image of another thought that brings to the lips the name of the late lamented lord dudley coutts stuart. How natural that I, a Pole, should feel a desire to pay a tribute of the heart to a spirit so noble. I believe I may realise my wishes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poland, the Unknown Of all the questions presented for settlement to the Congress of 1919, none was more momentous than that of Poland. Civilization has had to defend itself against Germany - a Prussified Germany. For forty years before the Great War Germany had been penetrated, hypnotized, dominated, possessed, by the evil spirit of Prussia. But the fabric of Prussia was originally reared on the ruins of Poland. Prussia only existed as a real power in Europe because, and when, Poland had ceased to exist. The Polish question is the Prussian question on its reverse side. Whatever Governments may say or do, the feeling of the peoples who have suffered from the Hohenzollerns is Delenda est Borussia. But the cry "Down with Prussia" is equivalent to the demand "Up with Poland." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Poland Yes, we did regard the accomplished facts as not final. As much as we could, we did stick to our belief, expressed in the song to which no Pole ever listens sitting, the song; Poland Is Not Yet Lost. And when this war broke out, within a few weeks we had a declaration from the Russian commander-in-chief, a declaration that the partition of Poland had been a great wrong. And now you see all the three powers declaring that each one of them is going to give Poland happiness, to restore Poland. The Polish question is not dead; it is not buried. Fif you speak of Poland today, you may mean any one of four things. First of all, you may mean the old empire, the empire as it existed in 17 7 2, the empire which had been created by the union between the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. In 17 72 Poland extended from a point near Berlin almost to Kief, and reached very close to the Black Sea. Secondly, you may mean by Poland, not the whole of Poland, but only what is usually called the Congress-king dom, that is, the kingdom created by the Congress of Vienna in 1815, the part which is now usually referred to as Russian Poland. The Congress of Vienna in 1815 took away from Prussia part of what had been assigned to her in 1795 and formed this into what is now called Poland, that is to say, Russian Poland.
