Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poland as a Geographical Entity Different races of men have different characteristics, which allow us to distinguish one race from another. One race has straight hair, another has curled hair; one has a broad head, another has a long, head; one has blue eyes, another black. We may class men according to their physical characteristics. We may go farther and differentiate individual men according to their differences. No two men, even of the same race, are exactly alike. By making an inventory of their physical characteristics every man might be differentiated from every other. A somewhat similar method has been applied to geographical regions. These have been studied and classified. Certain similarities have been found. This, that, and the other are mountainous and rainy; other regions are flat and dry. They obviously fall into different groups corresponding, we may say, to the different races of men. Regions have also been studied and analysed. An inventory has been made of their characteristics so that the points in which they differ from other regions may be noted. No one region is exactly like another, any more than one man is exactly like another. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. From the early 1990s on, it was possible to discern certain phenomena that were an outcome of either earlier decisions taken by the communist authorities, or else part of what the communists had inherited from earlier times. This book looks into these areas.

Book excerpt: This anthology aims to present the fundamental philosophical issues and tools required by the reflection within and upon geography and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) . It is an introduction to the philosophy for GIScience from an analytical perspective, which looks at GIS with a specific focus on its fundamental and most general concepts and distinctions. The first part of the book is devoted to explore some of the main philosophical questions arising from GIS and GIScience, which include, among others, investigations in ontology, epistemology, linguistics and geometrical modeling. The second part concerns issues related to spatial and cartographical representations of the geographical world. The third part is focused on the ontology of geography, specifically in terms of geographical entities, objects and boundaries. Finally, in the fourth part, the topic of GIS constitutes a starting point for exploring themes such as quantum geography and disorientation, and for defining professional profiles for geographers with competences in GIS environment. This book on a new and unexplored field of research could be a fundamental point of reference for professional philosophers and geographers interested in the theoretical reflection about the foundational concepts of GIScience. It is also interesting reading material for students (both undergraduates, postgraduates and Ph.D. students) in philosophy, geography, applied ontology, GIScience, geomatics and computer science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poland in a Colonial World Order is a study of the interwar Polish state and empire building project in a changing world of empires, nation-states, dominions, protectorates, mandates, and colonies. Drawing from a wide range of sources spanning two continents and five countries, Piotr Puchalski examines how Polish elites looked to expansion in South America and Africa as a solution to both real problems, such as industrial backwardness, and perceived issues, such as the supposed overrepresentation of Jews in "liberal professions." He charts how, in partnership with other European powers and international institutions such as the League of Nations, Polish leaders made attempts to channel emigration to South America, to establish direct trade with Africa, to expedite national minorities to far-away places, and to tap into colonial resources around the globe. Puchalski demonstrates the intersection between such national policies and larger processes taking place at the time, including the internationalist turn of colonialism and the global fascination with technocratic solutions. Carefully researched, the volume is key reading for scholars and advanced students of twentieth-century European history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Placed at the intersection among philosophy, geography, and computer science, the domain of investigation of applied ontology of geography ranges from making explicit assumptions and commitments of geography as a discipline, to the theoretical and technical needs of geographical/IT tools, such as GIS and geo-ontologies. Such a domain of investigation represents the central topic of discussion of this book, which intends: 1) to provide an overview of the mutual interactions among the disciplines encompassed in the domain; 2) to discuss notions such as spatial representation, boundaries, and geographical entities that constitute the main focus of the (philosophical) ontology of geography; 3) to propose a geographical classification of geo-ontologies in response to their increasing diffusion within the contemporary debate, as well as to show what ontological categories best systematize their contents. The second edition of the book differs from the first one as it offers a broader analysis of the (philosophical) ontology of geography: an analysis that is no more limited to the theoretical need of geo-ontologies.
