Book excerpt: In this research, we proposed a novel point-based statistical approach for automatic building segmentation and extraction by analyzing the differences between two LiDAR returns, the change of variance, and density from LiDAR point clouds. Then we applied an object-based supervised classification algorithms namely support vector machine (SVM) with several LiDAR-derived features, such as height texture (NDSM, DEM), and contrast texture from co-occurrence matrix and intensity (amplitude of LiDAR response) to extract the building areas in comparison of the result of the statistical methods. Since the terrain is highly uneven and the normalized DSM was a crucial factor in both methods, we filtered the ground points using a new filtering method, which is a combination of the slope-based algorithm (Vosselman 2003) and statistical analysis of last-return of LiDAR data in order to establish the DEM. Furthermore, the accuracy assessment was tested using a four band high-resolution (one foot) digital aerial ortho-imagery. The results show that LiDAR data could be used as a very reliable and stable data source for building extraction in urban areas.

Book excerpt: Three dimensional (3D) information about ground and above-ground features such as buildings and trees is important for many urban and environmental applications. Recent developments in Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) technology provide promising alternatives to conventional techniques for acquiring such information. The focus of this dissertation research is to effectively and efficiently filter massive airborne LiDAR point cloud data and to extract main above-ground features such as buildings and trees in the urban area. A novel segmentation algorithm for point cloud data, namely the 3D k mutual nearest neighborhood ( k MNN) segmentation algorithm, was developed based on the improvement to the k MNN clustering algorithm by employing distances in 3D space to define mutual nearest neighborhoods. A set of optimization strategies, including dividing dataset into multiple blocks and small size grids, and using distance thresholds in x and y, were implemented to improve the efficiency of the segmentation algorithm. A segmentation based filtering method was then employed to filter the generated segments, which first generates segment boundaries using Voronoi polygon and dissolving operations, and then labels the segments as ground and above-ground based on their size and relative heights to the surrounding segments. An object-based feature extraction approach was also devised to extract buildings and trees from the above-ground segments based on object-level statistics derived, which were subject to a rule based classification system developed by either human experts or an inductive machine-learning algorithm. Case studies were conducted with four different LiDAR datasets to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed approaches. The proposed segmentation algorithm proved to be not only effective in separating ground and above-ground measurements into different segments, but also efficient in processing large datasets. The segmentation based filtering and object based feature extraction approaches have also demonstrated effectiveness in labeling the segments into ground and above-ground and in extracting buildings and trees from the above-ground segments. When incorporating spectral information from remote sensing imagery with the LiDAR data, the accuracy for feature extraction was further increased.

Book excerpt: Despite advances in remote sensing technology and computational power, automatic land use classification has remained a difficult process, and successful approaches require the incorporation of ancillary GIS data. This study seeks to address the issues which have held back land use classifications making exclusive use of remotely sensed data by using buildings as an alternative to parcels for classification and using ontology to identify existing classification problems and delineate avenues for improving classification methodology. LIDAR point cloud data from the City of Austin is used exclusively for the initial building extraction process, and an impervious surface classification layer derived from DOQQ aerial photography is joined with this layer for the building classification process. The building extraction employs segmentation in Definiens Professional and Neural Network classification in MATLAB and achieves a segment level of accuracy of 92% and kappa of 0.7, with an adjusted building detection rate of 74%, after the exclusion of buildings under 50 square meters in area. A land-use classification scheme using classes derived from the City of Austin's Urban Land Use codes is applied to ground truth buildings and results in a classification accuracy of 80.4% with a kappa of 0.35. When this classification methodology is applied to the extracted buildings the result is overall accuracy is 78.6% with a kappa of 0.33. Further avenues for improving these results are suggested by the ontology and an exploration of the errors.

In this thesis, the 2D extraction and 3D reconstruction methods are propos ed to map and visualize urban buildings. Chapter 2 presents an object-based method for extra ction of building footprints using LiDAR derived NDTI (Normalized Difference Tree Index) and intensity data. The overall accuracy of 94.0% and commission error of 6.3% in building e xtraction is achieved with the Kappa of 0.84. Chapter 3 presents a GIS-based 3D building re construction method. The results indicate that the method is effective for generating 3D buil ding models. The 91.4% completeness of roof plane identification is achieved, and the over all accuracy of the flat and pitched roof plane classification is 88.8%, with the user's accu racy of the flat roof plane 97.8% and pitched roof plane 100%.

Book excerpt: Topographic feature detection of land cover from LiDAR data is important in various fields - city planning, disaster response and prevention, soil conservation, infrastructure or forestry. In recent years, feature classification, compliant with Object-Based Image Analysis (OBIA) methodology has been gaining traction in remote sensing and geographic information science (GIS). In OBIA, the LiDAR image is first divided into meaningful segments called object candidates. This results, in addition to spectral values, in a plethora of new information such as aggregated spectral pixel values, morphology, texture, context as well as topology. Traditional nonparametric segmentation methods rely on segmentations at different scales to produce a hierarchy of semantically significant objects. Properly tuned scale parameters are, therefore, imperative in these methods for successful subsequent classification. Recently, some progress has been made in the development of methods for tuning the parameters for automatic segmentation. However, researchers found that it is very difficult to automatically refine the tuning with respect to each object class present in the scene. Moreover, due to the relative complexity of real-world objects, the intra-class heterogeneity is very high, which leads to over-segmentation. Therefore, the method fails to deliver correctly many of the new segment features. In this dissertation, a new hierarchical 3D object segmentation algorithm called Automatic Virtual Surveyor based Object Extracted (AVSOE) is presented. AVSOE segments objects based on their distinct geometric concavity/convexity. This is achieved by strategically mapping the sloping surface, which connects the object to its background. Further analysis produces hierarchical decomposition of objects to its sub-objects at a single scale level. Extensive qualitative and qualitative results are presented to demonstrate the efficacy of this hierarchical segmentation approach.

Book excerpt: Automatically generating building footprint from remote sensing data is an active research topic because of the widespread usage of building footprint in numerous applications. The invention of airborne LiDAR technology has made it possible to measure the ground objects in a large-scale area with a dense and accurate three-dimensional (3-D) point cloud, and therefore provide a new and promising data source for extracting building footprint. However, due to the fact that the LiDAR point cloud is a set of unordered 3-D point coordinates with tremendous size, many traditional remote sensing algorithms that are designed for processing raster and image data cannot be directly applied on LiDAR point cloud. This research presents an efficient and automated workflow to generate building footprint from pre-classified LiDAR data. In this workflow, the pre-classified LiDAR points that belong to the building category are first segmented into multiple clusters through applying an efficient grid-based segmentation algorithm. Each cluster contains the points of an individual building. Then the recursive convex hull algorithm is designed and applied on each cluster to efficiently generate the initial outline for each building. The LiDAR points are irregularly distributed, which causes the generated vii initial building outline to contained irregular zig-zag shape. The initial building outline needs to be regularized in order to deliver the final building footprint with acceptable linear or curvilinear boundaries. To achieve this, a signal-based regularization algorithm that can analyze the wholistic geometric structure of building outline through a 1-D signal is introduced. The signalbased regularization uses Gaussian Smoothing and unsupervised data clustering as the main techniques to regularize the initial building outline. In order to improve it, the more advanced signal processing technique named Cauchy Norm Decomposition is also proposed for more effective regularization. Furthermore, for the purpose of generating final building footprint for the building that may have curvilinear boundary, a robust regularization algorithm that is able to reconstruct both straight-line and curvilinear boundaries is developed by denoising the cumulative signal transformed from initial building outline. The performance of grid-based segmentation and recursive hull algorithm are evaluated qualitatively using the datasets collected at both Santa Rosa, CA and Toronto Downtown. The performance of all the regularization algorithm is evaluated qualitatively and quantitatively using the same datasets.

The co-registered 3D map and intensity information can be used efficiently for different feature extraction application. In this dissertation, we developed two algorithms for feature extraction, and usages of features for practical applications. One of the developed algorithms can map still and flowing waterbody features, and another one can extract building feature and estimate solar potential on rooftops and facades. Remote sensing capabilities, distinguishing characteristics of laser returns from water surface and specific data collection procedures provide LiDAR data an edge in this application domain. Furthermore, water surface mapping solutions must work on extremely large datasets, from a thousand square miles, to hundreds of thousands of square miles. National and state-wide map generation/upgradation and hydro-flattening of LiDAR data for many other applications are two leading needs of water surface mapping. These call for as much automation as possible. Researchers have developed many semi-automated algorithms using multiple semi-automated tools and human interventions. This reported work describes a consolidated algorithm and toolbox developed for large scale, automated water surface mapping. Geometric features such as flatness of water surface, higher elevation change in water-land interface and, optical properties such as dropouts caused by specular reflection, bimodal intensity distributions were some of the linear LiDAR features exploited for water surface mapping. Large-scale data handling capabilities are incorporated by automated and intelligent windowing, by resolving boundary issues and integrating all results to a single output. This whole algorithm is developed as an ArcGIS toolbox using Python libraries. Testing and validation are performed on a large datasets to determine the effectiveness of the toolbox and results are presented. Significant power demand is located in urban areas, where, theoretically, a large amount of building surface area is also available for solar panel installation. Therefore, property owners and power generation companies can benefit from a citywide solar potential map, which can provide available estimated annual solar energy at a given location. An efficient solar potential measurement is a prerequisite for an effective solar energy system in an urban area. In addition, the solar potential calculation from rooftops and building facades could open up a wide variety of options for solar panel installations. However, complex urban scenes make it hard to estimate the solar potential, partly because of shadows cast by the buildings. LiDAR-based 3D city models could possibly be the right technology for solar potential mapping. Although, most of the current LiDAR-based local solar potential assessment algorithms mainly address rooftop potential calculation, whereas building facades can contribute a significant amount of viable surface area for solar panel installation. In this paper, we introduce a new algorithm to calculate solar potential of both rooftop and building facades. Solar potential received by the rooftops and facades over the year are also investigated in the test area.
