Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Soul Exceeds its Circumstances brings together sixteen of the most prominent scholars who have written on Seamus Heaney to examine the Nobel Prize winner’s later poetry from a variety of critical and theoretical perspectives. While a great deal of attention has been devoted to Heaney’s early and middle poems—the Bog Poems in particular—this book focuses on the poetry collected in Heaney's Seeing Things (1991), The Spirit Level (1996), Electric Light (2001), District and Circle (2006), and Human Chain (2010) as a thematically connected set of writings. The starting point of the essays in this collection is that these later poems can be grouped in terms of style, theme, approach, and intertextuality. They develop themes that were apparent in Heaney’s earlier work, but they also break with these themes and address issues that are radically different from those of the earlier collections. The essays are divided into five sections, focusing on ideas of death, the later style, translation and transnational poetics, luminous things and gifts, and usual and unusual spaces. A number of the contributors see Heaney as stressing the literary over the actual and as always looking at the interstices and positions of liminality and complexity. His use of literary references in his later poetry exemplifies his search for literary avatars against whom he can test his own ideas and with whom he can enter into an aesthetic and ethical dialogue. The essayists cover a great deal of Heaney’s debts to classical and modern literature—in the original languages and in translations—and demonstrate the degree to which the streets on which Heaney walked and wrote were two-way: he was influenced by Virgil, Petrarch, Milosz, Wordsworth, Keats, Rilke, and others and, in turn, had an impact on contemporary poets. This remarkable collection will appeal to scholars and literary critics, undergraduates as well as graduate students, and to the many general readers of Heaney's poetry.

Book excerpt: For readers of Roberto Bolaño's Savage Detectives and Muriel Spark's Loitering with Intent, this "sublime" and "delightfully unhinged" metaphysical mystery disguised as a picaresque romp follows one poet's spectacular fall from grace to ask a vital question: Is everyone a plagiarist? (Nicolette Polek, author of Imaginary Museums). A scandal has shaken the literary world. As the unnamed narrator of Dead Souls discovers at a cultural festival in central London, the offender is Solomon Wiese, a poet accused of plagiarism. Later that same evening, at a bar near Waterloo Bridge, our narrator encounters the poet in person, and listens to the story of Wiese's rise and fall, a story that takes the entire night—and the remainder of the novel—to tell. Wiese reveals his unconventional views on poetry, childhood encounters with "nothingness," a conspiracy involving the manipulation of documents in the public domain, an identity crisis, a retreat to the country, a meeting with an ex-serviceman with an unexpected offer, the death of an old poet, a love affair with a woman carrying a signpost, an entanglement with a secretive poetry cult, and plans for a triumphant return to the capital, through the theft of poems, illegal war profits, and faked social media accounts—plans in which our narrator discovers he is obscurely implicated. Dead Souls is a metaphysical mystery brilliantly encased in a picaresque romp, a novel that asks a vital question for anyone who makes or engages with art: Is everyone a plagiarist?

Book excerpt: I wrote these poems from my soul to help someone on the journey they may be walking. Life is like shiny sequins sometimes flashy most times you lose some pieces. Like the fabric when you rub the pattern of sequin in one direction against the grain it may be rough in the other direction it will be smooth; such is my metaphor for my life. Like the fabric of life in spite of a few tugs that leave a space or two without sequins. I still maintain and shine just the same. My life has been a purposeful journey to birth this book of poetry it’s a part of fulfilling my purpose to inspire through words. We all have an audience to reach and we have something to contribute to this world through our experiences. I grew up reading Dr. Wayne W. Dyer’s books from the first to the last. The impact of his words were jewels that made my life challenges lessons for my spiritual growth. I hope these simple poems ordered from A to Z will reveal some positive revelations I found to help me on my journey through life. Just pick a problem and open the book to any poem you will have a new perspective on any situation; if you like just sit back and enjoy from beginning to end. Things will happen in life the most important thing to remember is you are love, remain whole and keep shining your light. Therefore, I present poetry from my spirit entitled Sequin Soul.

Book excerpt: Altar Coals, in the Bible were used for one of two purposes either to render judgment, or for purging. For me, these poems have served as the altar coals toward these same purposes. My intention is to share them, and maybe they too will serve the reader in that capacity as well. We are living in a time where it is fashionable to be openly sinful, even among the churched. It is all too common in today's modern lifestyle. This practice is oftentimes accepted in the guise of love, and is nearly always void of admonition or rebuke. We are in desperate need of a wake-up call to bring us into reality of how the night is far spent, and the day is dawning. The Lord is due to return soon, and His people are distracted in their quest for pleasure or greed, bound by sinful habits, insensitive, irresponsive, and feigning obedience to God. Remember, that even the lukewarm' are rejected along with those who are found to be cold, (Revelation 3). We need to be shaken from our fence-sitting attitudes (which is lukewarm) unto all the truth of God that we can absorb. It is now that we need to have our hearts set ablaze by the Holy Spirit to manifest the will of God, first in our own lives, and then outwardly reaching toward others. When we get right' with God, He changes our hearts and there is an undeniable testimony that exudes from a life changed by the power of God. It is His holiness, and righteousness then revealed through us. The days are growing darker, and the latter rain will bring the Earth's harvest to a full ripening, whether of that to righteousness and holiness, or to unrighteousness, and evil heartedness. It is deception to think that there is a middle ground', for in this war there are no neutrals. This is the spirit of those who will overcome the wickedness prevalent in this last day, "They overcame him (the dragon, Satan) by the blood of the Lamb, and the word of their testimony, and they loved not their lives unto the death." (Revelation 12:11)

Book excerpt: I have an unconditional love which I know was imparted to me from my mother and the demonstrated love she had for me and my siblings. My mother's journey caused her to observe many indifferences; she never changed, her love was unconditional. This book of poems is my way of sharing, through poetry, the love my mother gave to me. I may have been the different child out of the eleven children; not ever did she once make me feel I didn't matter. In this book, My Poetry Soul brings to light that no matter what, where, when, why, or how, I'm included, and I want you to feel the stories of my love's journey. I believe there is a poem that you will connect to, whether in moments of sadness, health, wealth, achievements, even death, no matter the love language we speak, always matters. I hope that something that My Poetry Soul has written touches someone's life and encourages you.
