Book excerpt: The Window to My Soul is an empirical experience, essentially aimed to demonstrate how powerful we, as humans, really are and that when we come to terms with our impediments and make decisions to fight, victory finally becomes ours. As I reached the end of my script, I realized that I needed to complete the preface to the book (in the making). Thinking about the past, a past that Ive put behind me, I also realized that I had to bring those experiences into the present in order for me to make sense of what had really happened to me. As I structured and completed my thoughts, I eventually found the courage to put the past back to where it belonged. This book covers my experiences over a period of time, and I felt that I had to make sense of those happenings that took place around me while I was in a state of total confusion. The stroke that I suffered was one of the key issues with which I had to deal; the damage to my brain had been so severe that I could hardly grasp the full severity of what was happening to me or comprehend or come to terms with what was happening to me at the time. But I knew I had to survive in the ever-changing world around me.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black gospel music grew from obscure nineteenth-century beginnings to become the leading style of sacred music in black American communities after World War II. Jerma A. Jackson traces the music's unique history, profiling the careers of several singers--particularly Sister Rosetta Tharpe--and demonstrating the important role women played in popularizing gospel. Female gospel singers initially developed their musical abilities in churches where gospel prevailed as a mode of worship. Few, however, stayed exclusively in the religious realm. As recordings and sheet music pushed gospel into the commercial arena, gospel began to develop a life beyond the church, spreading first among a broad spectrum of African Americans and then to white middle-class audiences. Retail outlets, recording companies, and booking agencies turned gospel into big business, and local church singers emerged as national and international celebrities. Amid these changes, the music acquired increasing significance as a source of black identity. These successes, however, generated fierce controversy. As gospel gained public visibility and broad commercial appeal, debates broke out over the meaning of the music and its message, raising questions about the virtues of commercialism and material values, the contours of racial identity, and the nature of the sacred. Jackson engages these debates to explore how race, faith, and identity became central questions in twentieth-century African American life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to create the life you want in alignment with your soul’s purpose • Reveal your soul aptitudes, limiting behaviors, and past-life karmic issues • Discover 14 easy-to-use spiritual tools to strengthen your intuition to profound levels and develop an inner source of guidance and wisdom for any situation • Learn why the Law of Attraction doesn’t work for most people and how to make it work for you Like an enlightened spiritual teacher, you, too, can tap in to the infinite wisdom of the cosmos to create a life of deep meaning and purpose. The key is integrated intelligence--your innate capacity, often experienced as “intuition,” to instantly draw upon knowledge beyond the confines of the five senses, from past, present, and future. Integrated intelligence enables not only a connection to the wisdom of the universe but also access to your soul template, revealing your self-limiting behaviors, karmic issues from past lives, and soul aptitudes--the abilities at which you excel. With knowledge of your soul template, you can successfully create the life you were meant to live in alignment with your soul’s purpose. Providing 14 easy-to-use spiritual tools to activate your integrated intelligence, Marcus Anthony shows you how to tap in to the wisdom of your soul template, distinguish the voice of ego from the voice of your inner sage, and strengthen your intuition to profound levels, thereby developing a trusted inner source of guidance. Explaining how the mind is not a shallow pond but an ocean of competing voices and energies, he reveals why the Law of Attraction doesn’t work for most people: any vision you attempt to manifest must be aligned with your soul template or the competing voices will act against it. Revealing how to bring the mind into presence to get “the secret” to work for you, Anthony shows how to use integrated intelligence to identify and live your true calling and create the life you want while fulfilling the deeper needs of your spirit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this ambitious book on southern gospel music, Douglas Harrison reexamines the music's historical emergence and its function as a modern cultural phenomenon. Rather than a single rhetoric focusing on the afterlife as compensation for worldly sacrifice, Harrison presents southern gospel as a network of interconnected messages that evangelical Christians use to make individual sense of both Protestant theological doctrines and their own lived experiences. Harrison explores how listeners and consumers of southern gospel integrate its lyrics and music into their own religious experience, building up individual--and potentially subversive--meanings beneath a surface of evangelical consensus. Reassessing the contributions of such figures as Aldine Kieffer, James D. Vaughan, and Bill and Gloria Gaither, Then Sings My Soul traces an alternative history of southern gospel in the twentieth century, one that emphasizes the music's interaction with broader shifts in American life beyond the narrow confines of southern gospel's borders. His discussion includes the "gay-gospel paradox"--the experience of non-heterosexuals in gospel music--as a cipher for fundamentalism's conflict with the postmodern world.

Book excerpt: Pure light beings from the 7th dimension have an interest in current human development. They have identified themselves as Simion, the Evolutionary Collective and have telepathically channeled Keys to Soul Evolution, through Jill Mara. Simion offers assistance to propel humankind forward to our next spiritual octave. They explain that the sentient Earth is making the transition to the next dimension, and we can join her by raising our vibration, thereby accelerating our soul evolution, individually and collectively. They educate us as to the inherent power of our collective intent to create a world of harmony and abundance. The light beings explain that our thoughts and emotions are energy forms that help create our universe, which is becoming increasingly super-conductive as we near a pivotal point when our solar system reaches the central plane of our galaxy around 2012. The level of energy available at this time will trigger a physical and spiritual shift that will transform our reality. They advise each of us on ways to consciously participate in creating a smooth transition, including how to: *Clear away the layers of your ego veil to reveal your soul's brilliance. *Develop sensitivity to frequency and raise your vibration. *Discover and create with your soul vision to live a purposeful life. *Regenerate and flow with the zero point field of source energy. *Use higher intentions to collectively encourage outcomes. Simion also reveals what humans can expect in the lighter dimension, such as: *Sensations of enlightenment and Ascension. *Inter-dimensional space and time travel. *Associations with the inter-galactic community. *The energetic balance and renewal of resources. *Giant strides in technology, healing methods, and psychic abilities. The purpose for delivering this message is to assist humanity in its ascension. Book excerpt: The almost unfathomable courage and the undying faith that propelled the Civil Rights Movement are brilliantly captured in these moving personal recollections. Here are the voices of leaders and followers, of ordinary people who became extraordinary in the face of turmoil and violence. From the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1956 to the death of Martin Luther King, Jr., in 1968, these are the peeople who fought the epic battle: Rosa Parks, Andrew Young, Ralph Abernathy, Hosea Williams, Fannie Lou Hamer, and others, both black and white, who participated in sit-ins, Freedom Rides, voter drives, and campaigns for school and university integration. Here, too, are voices from the "Down-Home Resistance" that supported George Wallace, Bull Connor, and the "traditions" of the Old South—voices that conjure up the frightening terrain on which the battle was fought. My Soul is Rested is a powerful document of social and political history, as well as a magnificent tribute to those who made history happen.
