Download or read book Islands written by Stuart Montgomery and published by Etruscan Books. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. ISLANDS is a collection of three long poems, 'Sirens', 'Circe', and 'Calypso', which are all part of the same cycle of songs. Each poem took longer to write than the adventures described. Begun in the '60s, a piece of 'Circe' appeared in Poetry Chicago and the full poem was published by Fulcrum Press in 1969. An early unfinished version of 'Calypso' was included in a Christmas supplement of the Poetry Book Society in 1976 and is now complete and published for the first time. 'Sirens', recently finished, makes it first appearance in this collection. "These poems, sensuous and crafted sing of the sea. They are chiseled into shape and swell with echoes like a conch shell held to the ear telling the ancient story"--Tom Pickard.

Book excerpt: The Islands Project: Poems For Sappho is a book-length collection of poems intended as a conversation with and investigation of the life of Sappho as can be imagined from her work and historical circumstances. The poems attempt a meeting between a contemporary woman poet and one from antiquity, both of them adrift in time. What can a lesbian poet know of her supposed progenitor? If Sappho is only fragments, is not a lesbian tradition in poetry the same, or does it only feel that way? The Islands Project investigates these questions and deals, at the same time, with the death of the poet's mother.

Book Synopsis Head of Island Beautification for the Rural Outlands by : Jefferson Navicky
Download or read book Head of Island Beautification for the Rural Outlands written by Jefferson Navicky and published by AC Books. This book was released on 2023-01-31 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When William Harrison Brown (aka Bird) returns to the island of his youth, he attempts to take his place in the long line of landscape painters in his family. Bird, however, paints with a 1961 Underwood typewriter. A series of interlinked prose poems, HEAD OF ISLAND BEAUTIFICATION FOR THE RURAL OUTLANDS follows Bird as he attempts to make peace with his identity as a son, islander, and writer in a family of visual artists. The book is part history of grief, part exploration of ghosts and hauntings, part philosophy of landscape painting, and part meditation on the nature of islands. An exciting new book out by Jefferson Navicky, author of ANTIQUE DENSITIES: MODERN PARABLES & OTHER EXPERIMENTS IN SHORT PROSE, which won the 2022 Maine Literary Book Award for Poetry, as well as two other hybrid works. "Gorgeous and sweeping, lyrical yet grounding, Jefferson Navicky's words felt both otherworldly and at home in my head and heart as I was reading this de-licious book. As an artist and islander, I savored his story's whispered secrets on legacy and art, family and individuality, and consumed Navicky's bite-sized prose with delight and wonder."--Mira Ptacin, author of The In-Betweens "Jefferson Navicky's work of fiction is many things: a frolicsome, inventive and thoughtful work of the imagination, a meditation on the vastness of a human life; and a poem that gives shape to human longing, regret, and the inevitable passage of time. Three generations of artists inhabit this large world, with their memories, visions, failures, and loves. The eighty-two short chapters are infused with the light and sound of the ocean--its changeability, its power and beauty."--Eleanor Morse, author of Margreete's Harbor Poetry. Hybrid.

Book Synopsis Devils & Islands by : Turner Cassity
Download or read book Devils & Islands written by Turner Cassity and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2007-03-15 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As he approaches eighty, Turner Cassity may finally be out of control. His hatchet has never fallen more lethally, meaning if you have the stomach for him he is more enjoyable than ever. Under the blade come Martha Graham, Johann Sebastian Bach, musicologists, tree huggers, Frank Gehry, folk music, folk art of all times and all places, folk... . There are, however, his unpredictable sympathies: Edith Wilson, skyscrapers, Pontius Pilate, Pilate’s legionnaires. He obviously has a soft spot for Pop Culture, although he cannot avoid seeingit de haut en bas. As usual, he is all over the place geographically. One feels he would slash his wrists before he would write a poem about any city on the traditional Grand Tour. Manaus, Campeche, Trieste, Budapest (as destroyed by Godzilla)—these are his places. He has a disturbing willingness to write on both sides of an issue, resembling in this Bernard Shaw. You have to read very carefully to see whether he tips his hand. One looks forward to Mr. Cassity’s posthumous poems, when he is beyond the reach of libel. For now, at least, we have Devils & Islands.

Book Synopsis MAKE US ALL ISLANDS by : Richard Georges
Download or read book MAKE US ALL ISLANDS written by Richard Georges and published by Shearsman Books. This book was released on 2017-03-03 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A history submerged in the ever-shifting currents of the ocean emerges in this debut collection by Richard Georges. These poems craft narratives of long forgotten migrations, shipwrecks, and the personal with a vivid and sensual aesthetic that is located in the contested spaces between the sea and the shore. "The voice is placid, and leaves no print of self-conscious style and ego but rather the poems themselves, rolling softly up the beach and then sucking us into a greater history of the sea and our only and sometimes lonely selves-- our i-lands." --Vladimir Lucien "In these pages all roads lead to the sea. The poet never plots a route. Gods fall, forgotten paths return, poetry books break and glasses of water kill. Though the sea divides, it brings redemption. Georges shows all mankind to be one author. His beauteous poems rise like coral islands. Justice is done." --Andre Bagoo "Singing 'light into bleakness, ' in vivid poetic language that shakes us out of apathy, Georges' harsh and lyrical hymns portray the painful beauty of the Virgin Islands and Caribbean archipelago." --Loretta Collins Klobah

Book Synopsis The Wind-Honed Islands Rise by : Reuben Tam
Download or read book The Wind-Honed Islands Rise written by Reuben Tam and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reuben Tam was born on Kaua'i, the northernmost of the Hawaiian Islands. His early, formative years were spent combing its beaches and coastlines, while his later, mature years took him to another island in another ocean, Monhegan, off the coast of Maine. These two places shaped his entire life and informed both the subject matter and the spirit of his painting and his poetry. While his painting and his poetry were seemingly disparate disciplines, they were both expressions of the same unique vision, a vision born of his love of the natural environment and his complete immersion in it. Every aspect of his professional and personal life, with its myriad interests and activities, reflected this vision.
