Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond Onomatopoeia By: Christine L. Frissora, M.D. Christine L. Frissora, M.D. is a Gastroenterologist at The Weill Cornell Medical Center. She earned her B.A. from Cornell University and graduated from the College Arts & Sciences. She earned her medical degree from Cornell University Medical College. Dr. Frissora has always been an avid reader and was fascinated by Ernest Hemingway’s use of prose in his work. He cut words, sliced sentences, and left a lot for the readers to fill in on their own. Being a talented writer, her professors made her promise to continue writing. “You have to keep writing – you have so much to say.” Later, other talented professors were struck by the author’s ability to capture an experience: “I feel like I was there.” “I felt my hand on his heart.” “That gave me chills.” Poetry sometimes motivates people to change their behavior. It can be used as a visualization tool for high stress situations – such as handling medical emergencies (A Great Win) or to enhance sports performance (Champions). Dr. Frissora covers a wide range of topics from beauty and sadness, to the trivial heartbreak of a tough loss in a match. She provides basic tools so that you can write your own poetry for your family or just for yourself. The poems come to the author in complete vignettes, but every writer is different. Dr. Frissora hopes that you will enjoy her free verse style and share the journey of a new voice in poetry. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Never before, have so many depended so heavily upon innuendo, double entendre and verbal camouflage to express, then secondarily to cover up their audacious lies. The only aspect more repugnant than these preposterous acts of repetitious weaving is the speaker who begins to imagine his or her own vacuous fabrications piqued enough to be veracious. In the past this "spinning" activity was known as double-speak and prior to that simply, doubletalk. Leaping back further still we find such oratory described more poetically as the "Turn Of A Phrase." Whereby the speaker either eloquently or by wit and mastery of the language, profusely and proficiently moved or 'spun' the topic on its axis. Thus guiding the emphasis and direction from one pivotal position to a different point altogether. In this way changing both the complexion and outcome of the discussion. May these short stories of poetic prose turn upon their phraseology axis' to reveal slivers of recognition and identity for you.

Book excerpt: The poems of C. J. are ones you will remember for a long time to come. Perhaps one day they will be required reading in high schools and, unlike the stuffy "Thee and Thou" of olden text, his works "will" be appreciated by future youths. Patrica "Tish" Schau CJ's writing is impossible to pigeonhole. Like Brautigan, his poetry has a strong narrative drive, pushing the boundaries between verse and story, blurring the boundaries of the real and surreal. And he's not afraid to be laugh-out-loud funny-to trade on the double entendre or create moments of absurd slapstick. A breath of fresh air in a literary form that so often feeds on misery, loneliness and despair. John Holton, Author Bendigo, Australia C. J. Krieger is a well seasoned poet, whose work is as rich and sweet as a mid August harvest. He has home grown his compassionate philosophies into a collection of poetry that is a virtual feast for the heart and mind. Sandra Erickson, Artist and Poet

Book excerpt: Foreword I love words. I love word play. I love simile and metaphor, double entendre and innuendo. I love reference and inference. I love writing poetry. But sometimes... It hurts. Prepare to listen, learn, and be deeply moved as you read these 34 poems--most of them short, many of them angry, and all of them ringing with truth. While the first several poems address historical outrages, such as slavery, lynchings, poll taxes, redlining, and medical maltreatment and neglect of Blacks, subsequent poems deal with more recent events that captured headlines worldwide, including the Capitol riots of January 6, 2021. "May Day," a mere 12 lines long, is a powerful tribute to George Floyd, and Breonna Taylor's death merits two poems. "The Conversation" is a heartbreaking expression of Black parents' need to talk with their young sons about the very real dangers they face in this society as they reach adolescence and adulthood. As you read, as you listen, you will encounter not just strong emotions, but subtle literary references, ingenious rhymes, and compelling rhythms. "Freedom Song" has as its leitmotif the stirring beat of a drum. It is easy to imagine many of these memorable poems being set to music. One can hope that someday soon, they will be.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is better to read a little and ponder a lot than to read a lot and ponder a little Denis Parsons Burkitt Poetry satisfies this dictum admirably. Unfortunately, modern English verse is very dense and leaves the ordinary reader gasping for explanation. In general, poetry in the western hemisphere is a forgotten genre that is studiously ignored. Religion in the classical sense has also lost meaning for many in the West, but the hunger for spirituality seems alive and well. It is ironic that in the wake of 9/11 and the widespread general hostility for Islam, a Muslim Sufi -Saint, Maulana Jallaluddin Rumi is the most popular poet instead of literary stalwarts like Frost, Shakespeare or Milton. Following a near-death experience, Rashid Osmani, the author of this collection started writing poetry. This is his third book to be published. His style is reflective of the spirituality and sensuousness of Rumi, who is revered by the author as the master. Forty poems are grouped in four chapters with delightful titles like Smile and Ponder. Each poem is followed by an explanatory note for context and meaning that helps the reader overcome the biggest obstacle to enjoyment of modern poetry. Website comments from other poets are also included to shed additional light and offer different perspectives.

Book excerpt: Quodlibet (kwd'l-bet'): a theological or philosophical issue presented for formal argument or disputation; usually humorous musical melody. Reading like a recipe including plenty of thought-provoking theology, a handful of double entendre, layers of perspective, and a dash of humor for a slightly thicker flavor, author Lance Barrett's poetic devices memorialize the daily challenges, failures, and successes of striving to become Christ-like. With a buffet of rhyming wonders, haikus, and aesthetically enticing words of wisdom and wit, Barrett offers a feast that will guide readers toward faith, hope, and the ability to love sacrificially. Creating what can only be considered an interpretation of the classic lyrical formulas, Quodlibet presents the emblematic characteristics of the Christian life. Ranging from poems under an overarching theme of goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, Barrett's work will lead readers to a deeper understanding of the greatest composer of rhyme and reason-God.

This book was released on 2017-04-30 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Curtis Gruenler proposes that the concept of the enigmatic, latent in a wide range of medieval thinking about literature, can help us better understand in medieval terms much of the era’s most enduring literature, from the riddles of the Anglo-Saxon bishop Aldhelm to the great vernacular works of Dante, Chaucer, Julian of Norwich, and, above all, Langland’s Piers Plowman. Riddles, rhetoric, and theology—the three fields of meaning of aenigma in medieval Latin—map a way of thinking about reading and writing obscure literature that was widely shared across the Middle Ages. The poetics of enigma links inquiry about language by theologians with theologically ambitious literature. Each sense of enigma brings out an aspect of this poetics. The playfulness of riddling, both oral and literate, was joined to a Christian vision of literature by Aldhelm and the Old English riddles of the Exeter Book. Defined in rhetoric as an obscure allegory, enigma was condemned by classical authorities but resurrected under the influence of Augustine as an aid to contemplation. Its theological significance follows from a favorite biblical verse among medieval theologians, “We see now through a mirror in an enigma, then face to face” (1 Cor. 13:12). Along with other examples of the poetics of enigma, Piers Plowman can be seen as a culmination of centuries of reflection on the importance of obscure language for knowing and participating in endless mysteries of divinity and humanity and a bridge to the importance of the enigmatic in modern literature. This book will be especially useful for scholars and undergraduate students interested in medieval European literature, literary theory, and contemplative theology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born to immigrant parents and growing up during the Depression, Harvey learned many life lessons as he grew, some harder than others. He loved school, especially geography and social studies, but eventually joined his father in his hardware business. While he was famous in town as Harvey Hardware and made a good living for his family, there was not much time left for creative outlets. When his daughter, Marilyn, passed away from Hodgkins lymphoma in 1987, Harvey joined The Compassionate Friends to share his grief and also began writing as an outlet for his emotions. Over time, his poems moved away from loss and grief to other observations on life. In Harvey Hockstein Rhymes, these thoughts and musings come together to allow all the guests of this life to share in his journey. Once Harvey started writing, he could not be stopped. Through computer struggles and e-mail issues, he persevered to bring us his thoughts of love, life, family, loss, and the universe. In sweet, funny, and imaginative verse, we catch a glimpse of what Harvey has been thinking through all these years. Being an overachiever, it took Harvey only eighty-plus years to bring us this book, which is comprised of just a sample of his many thoughts and may be called a short rendition of the last eighty-six years.
