Book excerpt: Though it has won the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, and the Bollingen Prize, the poetry of Robert Penn Warren still is not widely or well understood. In this study, Victor H. Strandberg redresses this imbalance by providing a comprehensive survey of the poetic canon of this gifted, complex, and much-neglected poet. Warren writes in the tradition of Western poets concerned with the painful experience of a forced, one-way passage from innocence into "the world's stew" of time and loss. This passage, Strandberg explains, results for Warren in bifurcation of the self into warring segments: a "clean" idealistic surface ego, and a polluted "undiscovered self" in the unconscious. Revelation of the "dirty" part of human personality is tellingly evoked in many of Warren's major works. As the poet's vision expands, however, these conflicting elements are unified in a "mystic osmosis of being" whereby "the world which once provoked... fear and disgust may now be totally loved." In addition to close analysis both of individual poems and of the poet's overall development, Strandberg reviews critical opinion of Warren's poetry over the last three decades and assesses his place among fellow poets. Both as "prophecy" and as "art," he concludes, Robert Penn Warren's poetry is so significant, versatile, and excellent "as to rank him among the finest and most fertile talents of his age."

Book excerpt: In the realm of poetry, where words dance upon the precipice of emotions and thoughts, "Eyes of the Heart: A Century of Poetic Vision" emerges as a kaleidoscope of a hundred vibrant poems. Each verse within this collection serves as a window into the myriad landscapes of the human experience, exploring themes as diverse as the tapestry of life itself. Within these pages, the reader embarks on a transcendent journey through the intricacies of nature, witnessing the whispered secrets of the seasons, the tempestuous dance of the ocean, and the ethereal whispers of the wind. Amidst chaos and resilience, these poems echo the resilience of the human spirit, standing tall amidst the tumultuous storms, finding solace in the symphony of life's chaos. Enchantment weaves through the verses, painting pictures of timeless moments, inviting readers to wander through realms where time stands still, and the heart finds solace in the embrace of beauty. Yet, alongside the enchantment lies the essence of shadow, where the play of light and dark accentuates the nuances of existence, beckoning contemplation. As the poems unravel, themes of reckoning and timelessness intertwine, mirroring the eternal struggle against the passage of time while embracing the eternal essence of the human soul. Each poem serves as a mirror reflecting the collective heartbeat of a century, capturing the essence of moments frozen in the sands of time. "Eyes of the Heart: A Century of Poetic Vision" doesn't merely encapsulate a century's worth of poetic musings; it embodies the essence of being human, celebrating the profound connection between our experiences and the universe at large. It invites the reader to witness life through the lens of a poet's heart, where every verse is a mosaic piece stitching together the fabric of our shared existence. May these poems be a guide, offering solace to the weary heart, inspiration to the wandering mind, and a sanctuary to the seeking soul. May they resonate within, reminding us of the profound beauty and complexity that defines our journey through the ever-evolving tapestry of life. This collection stands as a testament to the power of poetic vision, illuminating the world through the eyes of the heart.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reveals the ways in which seventeenth-century poets used models of vision taken from philosophy, theology, scientific optics, political polemic and the visual arts to scrutinize the nature of individual perceptions and to examine poetry’s own relation to truth. Drawing on archival research, Poetry and Vision in Early Modern England brings together an innovative selection of texts and images to construct a new interdisciplinary context for interpreting the poetry of Cavendish, Traherne, Marvell and Milton. Each chapter presents a reappraisal of vision in the work of one of these authors, and these case studies also combine to offer a broader consideration of the ways that conceptions of seeing were used in poetry to explore the relations between the ‘inward’ life of the viewer and the ‘outward’ reality that lies beyond; terms that are shown to have been closely linked, through ideas about sight, with the emergence of the fundamental modern categories of the ‘subjective’ and ‘objective’. This book will be of interest to literary scholars, art historians and historians of science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Susan Dean uses Hardy's own metaphor—the diorama of a dream—to interpret The Dynasts, his largest and last major composition. She shows that the poem presents a model of the human mind. In that mind is enacted an event (the war with Napoleon) and, simultaneously, the watching of that event. The author provides a reading of the poem in visual-dramatic terms, using the diorama stage as the vehicle for the poet's field of vision. She then defines various visual dimensions, the relationships between them, and the various ways in which they can be seen and understood. Her interpretation draws on Hardy's autobiography and critical essays. Originally published in 1977. Book excerpt: Nicholas Grene explores Yeats's poetic codes of practice, the key words and habits of speech that shape the reading experience of his poetry. Where previous studies have sought to decode his work, expounding its symbolic meanings by references to Yeats's occult beliefs, philosophical ideas or political ideology, the focus here is on his poetic technique, its typical forms and their implications for the understanding of the poems. Grene is concerned with the distinctive stylistic signatures of the Collected Poems: the use of dates and place names within individual poems; the handling of demonstratives and of grammatical tense and mood; certain nodal Yeatsian words ('dream', 'bitter', 'sweet') and images (birds and beasts); dialogue and monologue as the voices of his dramatic lyrics. The aim throughout is to illustrate the shifting and unstable movement between lived reality and transcendental thought in Yeats, the embodied quality of his poetry between a phenomenal world of sight and an imagined world of vision.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the philosophical discussion of Zen spirituality reaches its limit, poetry offers an effective expression of the sublime experiences. From a poetic perspective, enlightenment is understood as poetic leaps in the spiritual journey, which brings people from the habitually or conventionally established world toward new horizons of consciousness. This leap is a breakthrough in the overall consciousness, rather than a progression in contemplative thought. Therefore, it cannot be adequately described through abstract representation, but poetry can metaphorically capture this leap and reveal both the spiritual meaning and the practical wisdom of enlightenment. This book will take you on this fantastic journey of enlightenment.
