Book excerpt: As I make my way through various on-line and brick-and-mortar book stores, I am increasingly convinced that Russian literature is woefully under-represented. One can always find War and Peace or Crime and Punishment, but to think that is all there is to it?! In all fairness, it would take a separate store chain or a huge server bank to accommodate all the works that would provide a reasonably comprehensive picture of Russian literature. However, I can't help feeling disheartened when seeing, how much precious shelf space is dedicated to the mediocre romance novels and how little - to the works by Alexander Pushkin, Mikhail Lermontov, Anton Chekhov, Ivan Turgenev and Fyodor Tyutchev, to say nothing of Nikolai Gogol, Sergei Yesenin, Anna Akhmatova, Marina Tsvetayeva, Igor Severyanin, Alexander Blok, Alexei Tolstoy (yes, there was more than one famous Tolstoy in Russian literature) and many others. There is an entire population of poems and stories you have in all likelihood never met.

To this day, my heart races at the fact of anyone reading my inner thoughts and judging me harshly for the way I see life or if someone feels that I fail at have any meaning. Still I was told by an English instructor once that I was one of the greatest writers that she had ever met. Truth-be-told I couldve lived off of that recognition alone, but if I want it to be true in everyones eyes, I have to keep writing until that is a fact.

His poetry of love expresses those thoughts we want to communicate to our mates and family. He explains that the universe is full of love and that it is a waste of time for everyone to quarrel when what they really want to do is love each other. Love is a pure emotion that exists like a single thread among all of us and beyond that knows no bounds; we must simply embrace love and nurture it. Tell your loved ones that you love them, and try to never quarrel. This poetry collection offers a path directly to the heart. The Loving Song Being of one is the being of another Leaving one Only to be with another Only smiles and laughter make you feel You have what you have been after. A very special Love A touch of your lips warm waves, vibrations of breath Kisses when you came Kisses when you left playing that Song forming a place of Love A place of care, Loving cant be wrong For loving is a Song.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rilke’s Letters to a Young Poet are arguably the most famous and beloved letters of the twentieth century. Written when the poet was himself still a young man, with most of his greatest work before him, they were addressed to a student who had sent Rilke some of his own writing, asking for advice on becoming a writer. The two never met, but over a period of several years Rilke wrote him these ten letters, which have been cherished by hundreds of thousands of readers for what Stephen Mitchell calls in his Foreword the "vibrant and deeply felt experience of life" that informs them. Eloquent and personal, Rilke’s meditations on the creative process, the nature of love, the wisdom of children, and the importance of solitude offer a wealth of spiritual and practical guidance for anyone. At the same time, this collection, in Stephen Mitchell’s definitive translation, reveals the thoughts and feelings of one of the greatest poets and most distinctive sensibilities of the twentieth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An event of rare literary distinction, this book records the conjunction between two distinguished American poets, illuminating not only their work and their connection but also the deep strain of pantheistic mysticism in the American tradition. In 1934, William Everson came across a volume of Jeffers's poetry. In Everson's word, the power of Jeffers 'broke my own acquired agnosticism and compelled me to think of myself as a manifestly religious man. It is a power I still attest to in writing this study, a power which I continue to think of as an undiluted religious force'. It was after reading Jeffers that Everson's vocation as a poet emerged, and though they never met or corresponded, Everson has remained loyal and dedicated to Jeffers throughout his life. Everson, who published extensively under his religious name Brother Antoninus during his nearly twenty years as a Dominican lay brother, has become one of the most knowledgeable scholars and critics of Jeffers, as well as his one avowed poetic disciple. This book is written as a series of over-lapping and ever-widening meditations on Jeffers's sense of God, nature, the self, and language.

Book excerpt: Do you like lyric poetry with real rhyme and meter? * This book has over a hundred - from a few old favorites to hard-to-find ones you have never seen, including 19 first published here - all about love. Do you like poems of deep wisdom or powerful emotion? * Some poems here will mist your eyes - no matter how often you read them. Do you like books full of big, gorgeous pictures, mostly in color? * This 300-page book has nearly 200, to illustrate whole or parts of poems, or to show an author's portrait made close to when he or she wrote the poem. * Some poems are not suited to pictures, but most are. The song "Till Shadows Have Eaten the Moon" (which gave the book its title) has 28 color photos, spread over more than a dozen pages. (Reprint rights to just one of them cost more than the price of this whole book.) Are you tired of textbooky anthologies full of poems of uneven worth, arbitrarily grouped by topic, period when written, author, or title? * Poems in this book are arranged so earlier ones help you understand later ones. There are no duds, just for the sake of inclusion. If you resist jumping around, the emotional impact builds steadily as you go. * Also, the prose text before each poem will give you key facts about its author (not a dry biography), describe events surrounding its writing, and explain words used or pronounced in a way now uncommon. * For instance, for "Auld Lang Syne" (lyrics by Robert Burns in 1788), the annotation contains a 22-entry Scottish-to-English glossary, so you will know what the song really means and why it is sung at milestone events. Do you like proverbs or pithy quotes? * You will find both here, scattered among the annotations. Do you ever suspect a poem is misquoted or wrongly attributed? * To assure accuracy, every poem's wording, punctuation, and authorship were researched thoroughly. Where questions remain, you are told. Are you annoyed by typos, even in expensive books from major publishers? * This book was scrupulously examined by a highly experienced professional proofreader who spent an entire week checking every aspect of the text. * Also, the book author hand typeset all poems for best appearance. Are you ready to own a high quality, profusely illustrated book of soulful lyric poetry, unlike any other? * Then buy this book now. It's a keeper.

Download or read book Asperity Street - Poems written by Gail White and published by Able Muse Press. This book was released on 2015-08-31 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asperity Street, Gail White’s most balanced poetry collection, explores the breadth of human existence with cutting wit, irreverence, keen intelligence, and an uncommon mix of empathy and asperity. Besides the cynical or the lighthearted, which are hallmarks of White’s work, there is a newfound earnestness and gravity in these poems in their survey and interrogation of the human condition. White journeys the span from nursery to hospice—in between, she navigates the prom, family occasions, mating, gossip, and money matters with masterful formal dexterity. This is a collection that rewards the reader with a thoroughly entertaining and illuminating experience. PRAISE FOR ASPERITY STREET: In her remarkable collection, Asperity Street, Gail White takes on the whole sweep of existence. The street becomes the road of a lifetime, beginning with a Southern childhood and ending with a hospice finale. Laconic, ironic and comic, White’s drily resourceful, wickedly companionable voice takes aim on patrimony, matrimony, religion, money and the myth that assumes we choose our lives. With her sublime linguistic choreography, these poems dance to complex metrical tunes. We feel and hear them pulse with equal parts sympathy and vitriol. In Gail White’s capable hands, Asperity Street unfolds as a brilliant mural we can return to again and again, as the poet does—still vulnerable, and wiser each time. — Molly Peacock, 2014 Able Muse Book Award judge, author of The Paper Garden Gail White has done it again: here is another collection by one of America’s wittiest, most technically adept, funniest and most serious commentators on what it feels like to be human. — Rhina P. Espaillat (from the foreword), author of Her Place in These Designs I looked forward to reading Gail White’s new book of poems, Asperity Street, because I know she is one of America’s funniest poets, so when I got the manuscript I sat down to read it immediately. I knew how much I would enjoy it. I was not disappointed. The first three sections of this four-part collection have wit and bon mots in good measure, socko endings, words I’d never seen in poems before, like “cloaca” or a made-up word ending, “substituth,” to satisfy a droll rhyme. But nothing prepared me for part four. Nothing procedural changed. The insights were as sharp as ever, the language exact and clear, the cleverness and dexterity with form as deft, the music as mesmerizing . . . but this was a serious poet I’d not encountered before: there was a deepening of vision, an enhancement of feeling, the rueful treatment of life and death took on a cutting edge that slices to the bone. Don’t miss reading this book. — Lewis Turco, author of The Book of Forms
