A new idea and hope emerges that propels me to make a sound decision to rejoin the imperfect human race, fight the good fight, and run the race of life. Through the years I have come to know that God loves us more deeply than we love ourselves. God never abandons us but waits patiently and lovingly for us to call out for His help. I admit there are times I don’t understand His ways. However, as I put my trust in God by earnestly and honestly seeking His guidance and grace for my life, all the difficulties I’m having seem to become easier with which to deal. Complex issues seem to melt like ice cream on a hot summer day. By inviting God to be the rudder of my ship each day, my life has taken on a bright new meaning. It can be like the excitement of starting to read an exciting new novel, wondering what wonderful surprise and blessing God has in store for me in the next pages. In sacred scriptures, we read that God inhibits the praises and answers the prayers of His people. He can and will move the mountains and obstacles that often feel like handcuffs upon our wrists. When the essay was ready by the teacher, she immediately took it to the Principal who insisted that he read it in front of the entire school assembly. That experience was somewhat embarrassing to him not being used to so much attention. He continued to write but in a more subdued and secretive fashion. It was only after he began writing poetry of a spiritually uplifting nature, and began reading them during church services and other suitable occasion, did he, through the encouragement of others decide to attempt to publish any of his work.

Eight years later, my father passed away. The morning of his funeral, I woke up at 3:30, grabbed pen and paper, and wrote the poem "A Tribute to My Dad." My parents lived on top of a mountain in the Wichita Mountain Range and Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma, five hundred miles from my front door. Back in the day, my family and I, mom, and dad had great adventures climbing mountains, hiking trails, and watching the buffalo roam. Most days, in the still of the early morning light, dad would take their dog, Darla, for a walk down the hill and back. On occasion, I walked with them. On one such occasion, dad said he wanted to show me something interesting. So I followed him to the front line of the property where stood an old, snarled, twisted tree. In the middle of the tree trunk was a big hole. When you looked inside the hole, you could see the trunk was hollow. Whenever you discover a hole in the trunk of a tree, the first rule is to put a secret message in a glass jar and drop it down into the hole. And that's just what we did. When those beautiful days surrendered to evening shadows, my mom and I would sit on the swing in her garden, eat ice cream, talk about days gone by, and watch the sun slide behind the mountaintops. Years passed and seasons changed, and I understood that my parent's unconditional love and unselfish acts of kindness were unspoken words of encouragement, which inspired this writer to collect and share her own words of encouragement and inspiration.
