Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection shows one of the most constant themes throughout Emily Dickinson's poetry -her fascination with mortality. Her unique take on death is that it is universal, inevitable and not to be feared. She describes is so often in terms of joy and relief, using images often of clouds and dawn. In Dickinson's poems, it is a comfort in its inevita-bility. Although she does use religious terms when speaking of it, she doesn't have the typical religious feel around it: there isn't that feeling of escaping endless troubles on Earth to final exaltation in the worship of God. In her poems, it has more of a peaceful serenity to it, nothing grandiose. She doesn't go into disliking life at all, but more that Death is a comforting conclusion to life. Some of the poems were written in response to her losing a friend or family member to death and there is certainly more pain and sadness connected to the loss than any fear when she talks of her own death. As someone who was always quite scared of death as a child and teen, her poems brought me comfort. I was raised in a strict religious upbringing and the afterlife was painted in very specific details along with all the trials and tribulations of life on earth that would precede it. So in reading her poems, I was able to muse about this inevitability with a peace and detachment that I couldn't find anywhere else. In a letter to her cousin, Dickinson wrote: "I believe we shall in some manner be cherished by our Maker- that the One who gave us this remarkable earth has the power still farther to surprise that which He has caused. Beyond that all is silence...". It is that theme -the affection for Earth, the confidence of a peaceful afterlife despite our ignorance of it- that threads through these poems. Reading these poems allows us to feel the serenity of calm in the face of the inevitable, a sense of timelessness in our own limited amount of time. Emma Wallace, Singer-songwriter.

Book excerpt: A gorgeously jacketed hardcover anthology of passionate love poems from around the world and through the ages. It has often been said that love, both sacred and profane, is the only true subject of the lyric poem. Nothing better justifies this claim than the splendid poems in this volume, which range from the writings of ancient China to those of modern-day America and represent, at its most piercing, a universal experience of the human soul. This collection includes poems by John Donne, Christina Rossetti, W. H. Auden, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Robert Graves, e. e. cummings, Dorothy Parker, William Shakespeare, Sappho, Bhartrhari, Anna Akhmatova, and W. B. Yeats, among many others." Everyman's Library pursues the highest production standards, printing on acid-free cream-colored paper, with full-cloth cases with two-color foil stamping, decorative endpapers, silk ribbon markers, European-style half-round spines, and a full-color illustrated jacket

Now is the time to see the sunlight dancing as one with the shadows." "Gamble everything for love, if you're a true human being. If not, leave this gathering." Book excerpt: Purchase one of 1st World Library's Classic Books and help support our free internet library of downloadable eBooks. 1st World Library-Literary Society is a non-profit educational organization. Visit us online at www.1stWorldLibrary.ORG - The eagerness with which the first volume of Emily Dickinson's poems has been read shows very clearly that all our alleged modern artificiality does not prevent a prompt appre-ciation of the qualities of directness and simplicity in approaching the greatest themes, - life and love and death. That "irresistible needle-touch," as one of her best critics has called it, piercing at once the very core of a thought, has found a response as wide and sympathetic as it has been unexpected even to those who knew best her compelling power. This second volume, while open to the same criticism as to form with its predecessor, shows also the same shining beauties.

Book excerpt: The epic made simple. The miracle in the mundane. One day, while browsing an antique store in Helena, Montana, photographer Tyler Knott Gregson stumbled upon a vintage Remington typewriter for sale. Standing up and using a page from a broken book he was buying for $2, he typed a poem without thinking, without planning, and without the ability to revise anything. He fell in love. Three years and almost one thousand poems later, Tyler is now known as the creator of the Typewriter Series: a striking collection of poems typed onto found scraps of paper or created via blackout method. Chasers of the Light features some of his most insightful and beautifully worded pieces of work—poems that illuminate grand gestures and small glimpses, poems that celebrate the beauty of a life spent chasing the light.

Book excerpt: The On Poems by Philodemus (c. 110-35 BC), the Epicurean philosopher and poet who taught Vergil and influenced Horace, is our main source for Hellenistic literary theory. In Book 1 Philodemus summarizes a survey of previously unknown poetic and aesthetic theories. Compiled by Crates of Mallos this survey reviews the critical theories of earlier Epicureans, Peripatetics, and Stoics, who argued in some way that sound is the source of poetic excellence, and that the ear, unaided by the mind, can judge it. Philodemus led the reaction against this invasion of Hellenistic literary criticism by musical theory, arguing that form and content are interrelated, and that substantive content, not pretty sound, is what makes poetry worthwhile. The 200 fragments of Book 1 were entirely jumbled after its discovery at the site of Vesuvius' destruction of Herculaneum. This edition reconstitutes their original sequence, according to a new method, while exploiting previously unknown manuscript sources and new techniques for reading the extant pieces. In thus restoring this important aesthetic treatise from antiquity, it makes a major addition to the corpus of classical literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume III: The Remaining 65 Psalms Each of the 85 Psalms (83 poems) discussed in the previous volume of Major Poems of the Hebrew Bible has the highly remarkable feature of scoring an exact integer as the average number of syllables per colon; sometimes seven or nine, more often eight, which may be called the central normative figure of Biblical poetry. This can only mean that the classical poets did count their syllables. Moreover, they succeeded in bringing about a creative merger between various forms of numerical perfection and the structure of their songs, which is generally underpinned by the correct articulation in strophes and stanzas. The breakthrough of this discovery became possible on the basis of (a) a refined recipe for establishing the original (i.e. pre-Masoretic) syllable structure of the ancient Hebrew, and (b) a definition of the colon. In those poems in which the correct colometry is difficult to delimit, it can be established only by a three-pronged approach tackling syntax, prosody and semantics and able to combine them. In this third volume, the 65 remaining Psalms are subject of structural analysis, and once more are covered by full syllable counts. Although these songs do not seek to apply the exact integers, they display the other forms of numerical perfection on more than one textual level, so that they embody the same poetics. This will be no different in volume IV, which deals with Job 15-42 and will be published as the final volume in the Major Poems of the Hebrew Bible project.
