Book Synopsis Poetry and Personality by : Steven Jay Van Zoeren
Download or read book Poetry and Personality written by Steven Jay Van Zoeren and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a history of the hermeneutics of China's earliest classic, the Book of Odes, which was probably compiled about the 6th century BC. Neither a reading of the Odes as such, nor yet a history of their interpretation, this study attempts rather to trace the principles that guided the interpretation of the Odes over some two thousand years of Chinese history. The book begins by tracing the rise and development in China of the disposition to treat certain 'classical' texts as the ultimate repositories of the culture's values and norms, a disposition that was to shape the political, social, and cultural institutions of traditional China. A notable example was the examination system, which tested candidates for state office on their knowledge of the canon, in the process making questions concerning the interpretation of the canon prominent in public as well as in private life. The author then describes the emergence of the distinctive and influential hermeneutic associated with the Odes.

Second Series by James Russell Lowell is about a variety of incredibly talented writers and poems as their lives proceed from Lowell's imagination. Excerpt: "On the banks of a little river so shrunken by the suns of summer that it seems fast passing into a tradition, but swollen by the autumnal rains with an Italian suddenness of passion till the massy bridge shudders under the impatient heap of waters behind it, stands a city which, in its period of bloom not so large as Boston, may well rank next to Athens in the history which teaches come l' uom s' eterna."

Book Synopsis The Common Reader - Second Series by : Virginia Woolf
Download or read book The Common Reader - Second Series written by Virginia Woolf and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2017-02-16 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The Common Reader” is a collection of classic essays by Virginia Woolf, originally published in two parts in 1925 and 1935. As the title suggests, the essays are intended for the average reader and deal with a variety of literary topics presented in layman's terms. In the second series, Woolf looks at the lives and works of such authors as Daniel Defoe, Mary Wollstonecraft, Thomas Hardy, and others. A fantastic collection of essays not to be missed by fans of Woolf's seminal work and literature lovers in general. Contents include: “Virginia Woolf”, “The Strange Elizabethans”, “Donne After Three Centuries”, “'The Countess Of Pembroke's Arcadia'”, “'Robinson Crusoe'”, “Dorothy Osborne's 'Letters'”, “Swift's 'Journal To Stella'”, “The 'Sentimental Journey'”, “Lord Chesterfield's Letters To His Son”, “Two Parsons”, etc. Adeline Virginia Woolf (1882–1941) was an English writer. She is widely hailed as being among the most influential modernist authors of the 20th century and a pioneer of stream of consciousness narration. She suffered numerous nervous breakdowns during her life primarily as a result of the deaths of family members, and it is now believed that she may have suffered from bipolar disorder. In 1941, Woolf drowned herself in the River Ouse at Lewes, aged 59. Other notable works by this author include: “To the Lighthouse” (1927), “Orlando” (1928), and “A Room of One's Own” (1929). Read & Co. Great Essays is proudly republishing this classic collection now in a new edition complete with a specially-commissioned new biography of the author.
