Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Foreign Sacred Lyre: Metrical Versions of Religious Poetry From the German, French, and Italian, Together With the Original Pieces A French biographer of De Lamartine (who mingles censure of the politician with eulogy of the poet) relates that on the first appearance of his Meditations poe'tiques, ' a cry of admiration resounded through all France. The poet was saluted as a new deliverer, who, with the cross in his hand, broke the idol of Materialism, and dethroned Voltaire. In less than two years, forty-five thousand Copies were sold. He refers afterwards to the Harmonies poetiques et religieuses as a sublime book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: "Denis Devlin's poetry was formed in the Modernist mould, self-aware and kaleidoscopic. An aesthetics of fragmentation encouraged diversity which remained diversity despite the necessary process of defining a poetic identity. Integrating components from many sources did not imply assimilation to the point of blandness but a delight in provocative and frequently ironic juxtapositions." So begins Roger Little's Introduction to this collection of the translations from French, German and Italian made by the Irish poet Denis Devlin whom John Montague has called "the most resolutely cosmopolitan of recent Irish poets". First published in 1992, Irish poet Denis Devlin's Translations into English, edited by Roger Little, is reissued now in conjunction with Collected Poems of Denis Devlin, edited by JCC Mays (first published in 1989). In making these two major collections of Devlin's work available again, Dedalus hopes to introduce a new readership to the work of one of the most influential and, according to Samuel Beckett, along with Brian Coffey "without question the most interesting of the youngest generation of Irish poets".

Book excerpt: Going beyond exclusively national perspectives, this volume considers the reception of the ancient Greek poet Sappho and her first Latin translator, Catullus, as a literary pair who transmit poetic culture across the world from the early 20th century to the present. Sappho's and Catullus' reception has shaped a transnational network of poets and intellectuals, helping to define ideas of origins, gender, sexuality and national identities. This book shows that across time and cultures translations and rewritings of Sappho and Catullus articulate modernist poetics of myth and fragmentation, forms of confessionalism and post-modern pastiche. The inquiry focuses on Italian and North American poetry as two central yet understudied hubs of Sappho's and Catullus' modern reception, also linked by a rich mutual intellectual exchange: key case-studies include Giovanni Pascoli, Ezra Pound, H.D., Salvatore Quasimodo, Robert Lowell, Rosita Copioli and Anne Carson, and cover a wide range of unpublished archival material. Texts are analysed and compared through reception and translation theories and inserted within the current debate on the Classics as World Literature, demonstrating how sustained transnational poetic discourse employs the ancient pair to expand notions of literary origins and redefine poetry's relationship to human existence.

Book excerpt: Olga Sedakova stands out among contemporary Russian poets for the integrity, erudition, intellectual force, and moral courage of her writing. After years of flourishing quietly in the late Soviet underground, she has increasingly brought her considered voice into public debates to speak out for freedom of belief and for those who have been treated unjustly. This volume, the first collection of scholarly essays to treat her work in English, assesses her contributions as a poet and as a thinker, presenting far-reaching accounts of broad themes and patterns of thought across her writings as well as close readings of individual texts. Essayists from Russia, Ukraine, Germany, Italy, and the United States show how Sedakova has contributed to ongoing aesthetic and cultural debates. Like Sedakova's own work, the volume affirms the capacity of words to convey meaning and to change our understanding of life itself. The volume also includes dozens of elegant new translations of Sedakova's poems.
