Book excerpt: Closer to Dylan Thomas than Matthew Arnold in his 'creative violence' and insistence on the sound of poetry, Gerard Manley Hopkins was no staid, conventional Victorian. On entering the Society of Jesus at the age of twenty-four, he burnt all his poetry and 'resolved to write no more, as not belonging to my profession, unless by the wishes of my superiors'. The poems, letters and journal entries selected for this edition were written in the following twenty years of his life, and published posthumously in 1918. His verse is wrought from the creative tensions and paradoxes of a poet-priest who wanted to evoke the spiritual essence of nature sensuously, and to communicate this revelation in natural language and speech-rhythms while using condensed, innovative diction and all the skills of poetic artifice.

Book Synopsis Gerard Manley Hopkins by : Gerard Manley Hopkins
Download or read book Gerard Manley Hopkins written by Gerard Manley Hopkins and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1990 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844-89) has long been admired as a letterwriter for the vividness, sense of humor, and honesty with which he expressed his opinions. Although he died young, his life overlapped with some of the great poets--Wordsworth, Tennyson, Yeats, Robert Bridges--of the Victorian era, and his comments on them are astute and revealing. This collection, drawn from the three volumes edited by C.C. Abbott, covers the whole period of Hopkins's life, adding some important and lesser-known letters that have only recently come to light. Ranging in date from his school days to his final years in Dublin, the letters include correspondence with his German master at Highgate, a rare letter written during the course of his priestly duties, one to an Irish colleague on the political situation in Ireland, a late letter to his brother Everard on art and poetry, and various other letters to his Oxford friends, to John Henry Newman and Coventry Patmore, and to his family. Together they reveal a man of great warmth who had a wonderful perception of natural beauty, and deep religious ardor.

Book Synopsis Selected Poems of Gerard Manley Hopkins with Modern English Paraphrases by : Gerard Manley Hopkins
Download or read book Selected Poems of Gerard Manley Hopkins with Modern English Paraphrases written by Gerard Manley Hopkins and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Walhout writes of his first series of Hopkins paraphrases that it contained twenty of his most difficult poems. This second series includes all of the remaining early poetry and unfinished poetry from Hopkin's major poetic period. It is designed to reduce the difficulty in understanding the poems by offering complete paraphrases. The purpose is somewhat similar to that of giving a modern version of the Bible compared with, say, the King James Version. My first series of Hopkins paraphrases contains twenty of the most difficult poems. This second series includes all of the remaining poems from Hopkins's major poetic period beginning with The Wreck of the Deutschland in 1875, which was a turning point both in his decision to write poetry and in his distinctive style. The occasional poems, though not ranking high in Hopkins's own estimation, are included here because they reflect the distinctive style. Hopkins produced other poetical work, which is usually classified into early poetry and unfinished poetry. The early poetry seems less urgent for paraphrasing. As for the unfinished poems, it may seem presumptuous to paraphrase poems which Hopkins himself did not perfect. Neverthe
Book Synopsis The Collected Works of Gerard Manley Hopkins by : Gerard Manley Hopkins
Download or read book The Collected Works of Gerard Manley Hopkins written by Gerard Manley Hopkins and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-08-27 with total page 780 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, the latest in Oxford's edition of The Collected Works of Gerard Manley Hopkins, presents Hopkins at his most private and self-considering: there are mundane memoranda about neckties to purchase or letters to write, but also exacting revisions of poems. There are entries of quiet rapture, his attention caught by the unexpected sight of a bluebell or "some delicate flying shafted ashes...between which the sun sent straight bright slenderish panes of silver sunbeams down the slant towards the eye." Paintings, sculptures, and works of literature are stringently assessed, his aesthetic principles freely exercised. There are also nightmares relived; undergraduate "sins" unsparingly recorded; "signs" of heavenly mercy carefully noted; small acts of "kindness" from others, both unexpected and restorative, gratefully acknowledged. Like most diarists, Hopkins was committed to life-writing practices not simply to itemize his daily activities, but to explore the possibilities of textual "selving." The space of the page was the opportunity, incitement, and necessity of reporting what had been seen, what had been felt, what had been feared, in order both to memorialize the experiences and to make possible subsequent re-readings. Thus, the diaries and notebooks are a summary of the present and an investment in-even a prediction of-future responses. The entries extend from September 1863, during his second term at Oxford, until February 1875, while studying theology as a Jesuit in his beloved Wales, and from February 1884 until July 1885, while Hopkins was living at a "third remove" in Dublin, Ireland as a Classics Professor at University College and Fellow of the Royal University of Ireland.
