Book excerpt: I m just searching for myself in a little time capsule that remodels itself with each spring that passes by, and I know I m buried with questions that outnumber the answers, but I can t find myself the further I dig. Devonte. My first poetry collection Little Time Capsule captures the most self-reflecting and introspective poetic moments of my young adulthood. In weeding through my old journals and napkin scribbles and online posts to gather enough material for this book, I put together a compilation that I m hoping will make people smile and want to re-read over and over again. Within these pages are twenty-three unique poems delving into everything from my father s sudden passing to my struggles accepting myself as an LGBT youth and much more. I began writing in the eighth grade after our teacher asked my class to create a poem using our vocabulary words for that week. No one volunteered to read his to the class, so I did mine and got a good reaction. I never forgot how it felt the first time I strung words together to create what sounded like music in my head. I like cleverness and flashiness to poetry. I like writing in different styles. I love the challenge of wowing an audience and giving myself something cool to read later on. The poetry in Little Time Capsule was written over a span of nearly 10 years, roughly from 2003 to 2013 with the earliest poem being It, my personal favorite out of this bunch and the latest being Crystal Compass, which best depicts my state of mine before I decided to publish. I narrowed down the list of chosen poems from 139 to just 23. That was hard to do considering some of my poems stuck with me for years before I no longer felt comfortable reciting them. My beliefs tend to change over time as I mature, so something I said when I was 15 may turn out to be something I cringe at when I m 23. I feel it was best to publish these precious poems before I grew any further, hence the title of this book. I ve placed these poems in a time capsule for me to unearth later in life, for me to look back on and maybe share with future loved ones and the world. Here s a little about me: I was born in Chicago in 1989 to parents Claudette and Avery but spent my coming of age years in Meridian, MS. I love maintaining long term friendships and spending time with my beloved grandmother Lee who helped put me through college. Devonte is the recipient of the Winifred Farrar Award for English and also the Earl Love Guyton Scholarship which is awarded for showing promise in the field of communication (demonstrated) through a portfolio. In 2007 he won first place in the Meridian Community College Literary Review for poetry with the poem Twisting My Tongue in Pig-Latin and earned his bachelor s degree in communication from Mississippi State University in 2012.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of 2021 Write Bloody Publishing Book Award. A perfect book for readers searching for the salve of darker verse and recovery poetry. Every Little Vanishing is, at its core, a collection of poetry that will bring you to your knees with its honesty. "...our marriage / a bridge between staying for the children we had or leaving for the people we want to become." "Every Little Vanishing” might change your definition of poetry forever. If you've ever thought of the poem as something that muses and meanders, think again. Sheleen McElhinney writes poems the way novelists write page-turning fiction. Her first lines grab you by the collar and pull you––no––drag you through each word, kicking and screaming until you reach the poem's end. By the last line, you hurt so good you beg Sheleen to do it again. There were times I wanted to rip out the pages of this book and swallow them, desperate to consume the work in as many ways possible. There were times I pressed my ear to this book and heard an ocean of grief. What I mean is, this book will both drown and buoy you." --Megan Falley, Author of Drive Here and Devastate Me, Write Bloody 2018 Co-Author of How Poetry Can Change Your Heart, Chronicle Books, 2019 “Like submarines, Sheleen McElhinney's unflinching poems probe the lightless regions of memory, addiction, loss, longing, and daughter-/sister-/mother-hood. In her debut collection she illuminates the various ruthlessnesses of a ruthless personal history—an illumination powerful enough to reveal a hard won hope, even here among the grief and disappointments of living. This is a poetics of survival that, using as its instruments, a fierce attention to detail and a brazen, uncompromising candor. It wades resolutely through the terrors of inhabiting a body in time and arrives at the one true miracle: the next moment. And the next. And the next.” --Jeremy Radin, Author of Slow Dance With Sasquatch and Dear Sal. ABOUT THE BOOK: These poems drag you to the darkroom of vulnerability where everything is exposed; the wounded child, the wreckless adolescent, the life and death of a sibling to addiction, and the loss of self through marriage and motherhood. These poems hold beneath their hard exterior the soft underbelly of what it means to love and lose. They are for anyone who wants to learn how to grow a new skin, to excavate the body of its grief, to devour it, and to let it choke you.

If it was a special moment or lifetime event, she would always try to capture the splendor of the situation with words that intrigue and inspire. In fact, she still loves sharing the written word of poetry today. She is not only known for her beautifully written poetic works, but also her two Youth Christian books entitled, Jillian Foster's: Forgiven, which reflects the elements of anti-bullying and forgiveness and Michael Conway's: Acceptance, which preaches acceptance and anti-prejudice behavior. Now, for the first time, you will get to read the poetic works of Janine, captured in time and entitled: The Time Capsule. A time capsule is supposed to hold the most important artifacts of a given time period. So too does this book, but over many time periods in Janine's life. This piece of art allows the reader to delve into the priceless moments that define her Christian faith, love, inspiration, and family. Let this book become your table top treasure of words that define the depth of any given moment and the true meaning of the celebration of life's most precious events.

Book excerpt: Who remembers having to do a time capsule in school? The kind where you write a letter to your future self. Years later, you're to venture down memory lane! This collection of poems has been time capsuled in a notebook I was once afraid to even venture back to. Why, you ask? As we all age, life tends to take directions that some of us may have or not have hoped for. Going down memory lane can either be pleasant.....or not. The letters enclosed bore a far more graver discovery into self awareness, for me, than I could have ever imagined.

The pain, the betrayal, lost friendships, first unrequited love bled from his soul, seeped through his fingers and into the words and sentences on a laptop. The images born in his mind lived on paper. Three years of poetry filled with despair and hope went into this book and were conserved as the time capsule of his teenagehood. Writing gave him a purpose to live, a desire to share his thoughts, emotions, and experiences, a will to connect with the world through rhythm and line.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eric Ormsby is a poet who writes prose that is both graceful and hard-headed. With an outspoken contempt for cant and literary persiflage, Ormsby ranges over a surprising array of writers and literatures. Each essay involves a new and sometimes startling viewpoint, whether on Hart Crane's homosexuality and its effect on his poems or the strange and twisted, yet redeeming, place which Shakespeare held in his own family history. From American and Canadian poetry to Classical Arabic literature Ormsby brings a fresh slant and incisive expression to his prose. What was Franz Kafka doing at a ski resort in the last years of his life and what did he do there besides tobogganing? Everyone knows that Jorge Luis Borges was bookish, but did you know he was bloodthirsty as well? How is Pat Lowther's posthumous reputation as a poet connected with the brutal circumstances of her murder? These and other mysteries are explored in the 17 elegant essays that make up Eric Ormby's new book.
