He snoops and explores. He makes mistakes. And he gets into plenty of trouble when he encounters the dreaded and frightful, fang-toothed feral cat, and then later, narrowly escapes drowning in a rising tide pool. Fortunately, his perseverance is rewarded when he reconnects with a longtime friend, who reveals the secret of his past--and shares her admiration for the little mouse. An inspirational story that introduces children to changing habitats and endangered species.

Book excerpt: Pioneers traveling along the Oregon Trail from western Nebraska, through Wyoming and southern Idaho and into eastern Oregon, referred to their travel as an 800 mile journey through a sea of sagebrush, mainly big sagebrush ( Artemisia tridentata). Today approximately 50 percent of the sagebrush sea has given way to agriculture, cities and towns, and other human developments. What remains is further fragmented by range management practices, creeping expansion of woodlands, alien weed species, and the historic view that big sagebrush is a worthless plant. Two ideas are promoted in this report: (1) big sagebrush is a nursing mother to a host of organisms that range from microscopic fungi to large mammals, and (2) many range management practices applied to big sagebrush ecosystems are not science based.

Book excerpt: The Tijuana River Valley Historical Ecology Investigation synthesizes hundreds of historical maps, photographs, and texts to reconstruct the ecological, hydrological, and geomorphic conditions of the Tijuana River valley prior to major European-American landscape modification. How did the valley look and function before there was the state of California, the city of Tijuana, or an international border? What habitat types and wildlife were found there? How have these habitat types and the physical processes that shaped them changed over time? And finally, what can the valley's ecological past tell us about its present and future? In answering these fundamental questions, this richly-illustrated study provides scientists, managers, and residents in the valley with information designed to support and inspire ongoing management and restoration activities.
