But the main emphasis is on the glorious years between AD 3030, Constantine made Byzantium his capital, and 1453, when his city fell to the Turks. Within this period, Constantinople was the Heir of the Roman Empire and also the birth of the Byzantine civilization. The author traces the development of the Brilliant society of Byzantium, and of the architecture, which embodied its beliefs, and aspirations. He describes those buildings which still remain within the land walls, among them the Hippodrome, the Churches of St. Eirene, ST. John of Stoudios and SS. Sergius and Bacchus, and - above all - the church of Hagia Sophia, one of the greatest buildings of any period. He also discusses important buildings which have not survived, such as the Great Palace, and the church of the Holy Apostles. Mr Maclangan emphasizes the debt which Western civilization owes to the owes to the city; its libraries preserve much of the literature of antiquity and its military valour saved Europe for Christendom. The store cannot however be allowed to end in 1453. Some of the finest buildings, and the incomparable skyline, were the creation of the early Ottoman sultans an their great architect Sinan. This period is covered by Mr Maclagan in his final chapter. Fully illustrated by plans and photographs, this book will be an invaluable aid to visitors to Istanbul.
