Book excerpt: England is a strange place-- funny, complex and sad. Distance yourself from it, experience other cultures-- then look again. That strangeness becomes almost overwhelming. This is a powerful and perceptive view of England in the eighties. Using ideas of 'pleasure, ' Chis Steele-Perkins explores a public, ritual face that cuts across class and location. What we see is not only familiar it is also frequently disturbing. Chris Steele-Perkins is a "Magnum photographer whose work has been seen in most major publications in the world. Book Synopsis On The Pleasure Principle In Culture by : Robert Pfaller

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many illusions it is easy to find owners—people who proudly declare their belief in things such as life after death, human reason, or the self-regulation of financial markets. Yet there are also different kinds of illusions, too, for example, in art: trompe l'oeil painting pleases its observers with "anonymous illusions"—illusions where it is not entirely clear who should be deceived. Anonymous illusions offer a universal pleasure principle within culture. They are present in games, sports, design, eroticism, manners, charm, beauty, and so on. However, it seems that this pleasure principle is increasingly misinterpreted. The proud proprietors of certain illusions are no longer capable of recognizing that they also follow anonymous illusions. As a consequence, they mistake happy, polite others for naïve idiots or "savages"—the possessors of stupid illusions whose happiness is an obscene intrusion into the lives of more rational creatures. The misrecognition of anonymous illusions thus becomes a crucial ideological bedrock for contemporary neoliberal policy. Hatred of the other's happiness leads to the destruction of the public sphere and to a state that, rather than fostering and stimulating its citizens' capacities, interpellates them as victims and limits itself to providing "protective" or repressive measures directed against them.
Book Synopsis Modern Classics Beyond the Pleasure Principle by : Sigmund Freud
Download or read book Modern Classics Beyond the Pleasure Principle written by Sigmund Freud and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2003-07-29 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: in Freud's view we are driven by the desire for pleasure as well as by the desire to avoid pain. But the pursuit of pleasure has never been a simple thing. Pleasure can be a form of fear, a form of memory and a way of avoiding reality. Above all, as these essays show with remarkable eloquence, pleasure is a way in which we repeat ourselves. The essays collected in this volume explore, in Freud's uniquely subtle and accessible style, the puzzles of pleasure and morality - the enigmas of human development.
Book Synopsis On Freud's Beyond the Pleasure Principle by : Salman Akhtar
Download or read book On Freud's Beyond the Pleasure Principle written by Salman Akhtar and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freud's Beyond the Pleasure Principle constitutes a major landmark and a real turning point in the evolution of psychoanalytic theory. Pushing aside the primacy of the tension-discharge-gratification model of mental dynamics, this work introduced the notion of a "daemonic force" within all human beings that slowly but insistently seeks psychic inactivity, inertia, and death. Politely dismissed by some as a pseudo-biological speculation and rapturously espoused by others as a bold conceptual advance, "death instinct" became a stepping stone to the latter conceptualizations of mind's attacks on itself, negative narcissism, addiction to near-death, and the utter destruction of meaning in some clinical situations. The concept also served as a bridge between the quintessentially Western psychoanalysis and the Eastern perspectives on life and death. These diverse and rich connotations of the proposal are elucidated in On Freud's "Beyond the Pleasure Principle". Other consequences of Freud's 1920 paper - namely, the marginalization of ego instincts and the "upgrading" of aggression in the scheme of things - are also addressed.

That’s another story. In the research lab, Marin’s lack of practical knowledge didn’t matter, but now that she’s landed a job at The Grove, a high-end, experimental sex therapy institute, she can’t ignore the fact that the person most in need of sexual healing may be her. Dr. Donovan West, her new hotshot colleague, couldn’t agree more. Donovan knows that Marin’s clients are going to eat her alive unless she gets some hands-on experience. And if she fails at the job, he can say goodbye to a promotion, so he assigns her a list of R-rated tasks to prepare her for the wild clientele of The Grove’s X-wing. But some of those tasks are built for two, and when he finds Marin searching for a candidate to help her check off her list, Donovan decides there’s only one man for the job—him. As long as they keep their erotic, off-the-clock activities strictly confidential and without strings, no one will get fired—or worse, get attached…

Rather than taking as his point of departure the intentions of composers and librettists, he is primarily concerned with the expectations and desires of the audience. Book Synopsis Schizostructuralism by : Daniel Bristow
Download or read book Schizostructuralism written by Daniel Bristow and published by . This book was released on 2021-07 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Schizostructuralism draws together insights from psychoanalytic, structuralist, and Marxist theory, and the divisions and antagonisms that both underpin and distinguish them, to form a new psychoanalytic system. Working through the key concepts and methods in these fields, Daniel Bristow describes the processes of unification and separation inherent in structure, extends concepts within the field of psychoanalytic topology and its study of surface, and interrogates types and phasings of time that operate psychosocially, testing workings of these against analyses of class division and struggle. Returning to and working through key concepts and methods in the fields of structuralism, topology, temporality, and Marxist political theory, Schizostructuralism looks again at such major figures as Freud, Reich, Lacan, Laing, and Deleuze and Guattari-invoking their socially-oriented theories and practices-and sets out possibilities for recalibrating critical and clinical approaches to be more politically radical and inclusive. Bristow draws on an array of schematic diagrams, depicting and formulating the clinical categories of neurosis, perversion, and psychosis. Schizostructuralism will be of interest to academics and students of psychoanalytic studies, Lacanian studies and philosophy. It will also inform psychoanalysts in practice and in training"--
Book Synopsis The Penguin Freud Reader by : Sigmund Freud
Download or read book The Penguin Freud Reader written by Sigmund Freud and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2006-01-26 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here are the essential ideas of psychoanalytic theory, including Freud's explanations of such concepts as the Id, Ego and Super-Ego, the Death Instinct and Pleasure Principle, along with classic case studies like that of the Wolf Man. Adam Phillips's marvellous selection provides an ideal overview of Freud's thought in all its extraordinary ambition and variety. Psychoanalysis may be known as the 'talking cure', yet it is also and profoundly, a way of reading. Here we can see Freud's writings as readings and listenings, deciphering the secrets of the mind, finding words for desires that have never found expression. Much more than this, however, The Penguin Freud Reader presents a compelling reading of life as we experience it today, and a way in to the work of one of the most haunting writers of the modern age.
