Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I don't care who you hire, or what the company has to pay him … so long as he's the best there is." This anguished cry from the wife of murder victim Dean Milo would draw private investigator Bill Dear into one of the most frustrating and ultimately triumphant cases of his career. Dean Milo was a phenomenally successful businessman who had built a tiny family business into a $50 million-a-year corporation. Along the way he had established a lengthy list of enemies that began with his immediate family and stretched throughout the social and business community. His fast-track ride to the top came to a violent halt on August 11, 1980, when Milo was found dead in his luxurious Ohio home, shot twice in the head. A blank telegram form lay nearby. Four months after his death, the investigation remained a confusing collection of non sequiturs. Clues pointed toward Milo's involvement with the Mafia, the drug world, and the gay community. His own family refused to cooperate with the author¬ities. And time was ticking by … In desperation, Maggie Milo turned to Texas private eye Bill Dear. This is the gripping story of the remarkable collaboration between Dear and the police detectives of Akron, Ohio, that led to eleven convictions, an Ohio record. It is also a tale of the human weakness, desperation, and overwhelming greed that led to a sudden death.

Book excerpt: They are young, tough and resourceful, and they have been targeted for assassination by the very agency that made them. They are the CIA work-group known as Acrobat, and they are on the run. - Duncan Idaho, the Langley roadrunner who skirts the line between brilliantly daring and foolishly reckless. - Monika Summers, a ray of all-American sunshine, the utility player who can do it all, and does it exceptionally well. - Tobey Jansen, the nerdy financial genius trapped in the body of a punk-rocking anarchist. - Ljubica Greene, elegant and beautiful, the shopper who can score high caliber firearms or bogus walking papers as easily as shopping at Neiman Marcus. - Russell Orr, the six-foot-four strategic planner who knows how to keep his options open. What did Acrobat see in their time at Langley? What secrets did they uncover? How long will they last on the run? And most important of all, when will they realize that one of their own has betrayed them? From a blazing firefight in the bowels of Times Square, to a whisper campaign in the quiet hallways of Langley; from the political minefield of a White House briefing room, to a nightmarish chase down a lonely country road--Acrobat redefines the espionage thriller.

Book excerpt: During this time of a pandemic season and beyond, I hope to articulate a message in my book that you do not have to be stuck when you find out the root cause of your problem(s). Many situations arise because there are so many variations of sin used by the enemy to deceive people into thinking they have what they do not have. Today, not tomorrow, quit trying to please whoever it is that does not appreciate you on your job, church, school, college, team, family, relationship, or marriage. God has a door appointed for you to go through. Living in denial will delay/prohibit your mobility. Do not suppress your innermost feelings when you know you were once free, but now it feels like a trap within everyday life because of what somebody does or does not do. Life is meant to bring about trials and tribulations; however, if you can unravel the hidden truths, you are destined to be set free. Take charge and put action to your repetitive thoughts of what you constantly think about doing continually. At some point in life, you have to ask God for the revelation to say enough is enough. Otherwise, through time, you will accumulate multiple regrets which will cause you to be incarcerated from your choices. Today, please break free and move into your destiny. Do not bury yourself while you still live. Please act upon a solution, get away from denial, and make that long-awaited change that gets you away from being stuck. Hence, that level of immobility will penetrate your mind until you take action. After you conclude to take action, you will not have to look back anymore: ". . .Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord. The Lord will fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace" (Exodus 14:13a-14 KJV). Remember, sometimes, if not all the time, you must take feasible action for change. Failure to do so could result in being STUCK: Living In Denial Will Prohibit Your Mobility.

Book excerpt: In a world of increasing right-wing populism, global capitalism, and a climate emergency, leading thinkers come together to interrogate the meaning and practice of being outspoken. The violence, nativism, persecution, and social hostilities of the twenty-first century demand a call to order: philosophical and theoretical communities must commit their intellectual resources to confronting and articulating the structures, desires, and resentment driving the dismantling of democratic values. Action in the absence of understanding and political vision devoid of inclusive ideas are all the more vulnerable to taking a reactionary turn. Contributors to this volume challenge the return of fascism, dehumanization of immigrants, distrust of science, intolerance of fair and equitable economic models, and suspicion of inclusive political platforms. All, in their own way, tackle the burning question of how we might reimagine twenty-first-century life in the face of divisive forces. Outspoken includes essays by some of the world’s most radical thinkers – Rosi Braidotti, Henry A. Giroux, Amelia Jones, and Slavoj Žižek, among others – who together chart multiple progressive courses for political antagonism and social intervention.

Book excerpt: An Oprah Book Club® selection A New York Times Notable Book The Mulvaneys are blessed by all that makes life sweet. But something happens on Valentine’s Day, 1976—an incident that is hushed up in the town and never spoken of in the Mulvaney home—that rends the fabric of their family life...with tragic consequences. Years later, the youngest son attempts to piece together the fragments of the Mulvaneys’ former glory, seeking to uncover and understand the secret violation that brought about the family’s tragic downfall. Profoundly cathartic, this extraordinary novel unfolds as if Oates, in plumbing the darkness of the human spirit, has come upon a source of light at its core. Moving away from the dark tone of her more recent masterpieces, Joyce Carol Oates turns the tale of a family struggling to cope with its fall from grace into a deeply moving and unforgettable account of the vigor of hope and the power of love to prevail over suffering. “It’s the novel closest to my heart....I’m deeply moved that Oprah Winfrey has selected this novel for Oprah’s Book Club, a family novel presented to Oprah’s vast American family.”—Joyce Carol Oates

Book excerpt: Winters Rain tells the story of a time when life remained an unfair spiritual war game. It was a time when there were uncertainties and untold mysteriesand for some, fame. It was a cold day in hell, where no one could tell what it was like living in a jail cell. It was a time when challenges spread their way across the sky and when great torrential downpours and blocks of ice astounded more than the pounded dough of the American pie. It was when heavy winds ruled over rough terrains pooled in the distillation of predatory fears. It was a time when the merchant of death ruled like a plague with no breath, but not without the pain of knowing persistent suffering once again. Winters Rain uniquely portrays hidden sadness and loneliness. Of the many that embarked upon this sad and lonely journey, far too many lay in waste due to unattended gurneys. All have been consumed by the bombardment of fear. All have fallen prey to its savage rival steer, for not even hell can resist the stall of innocent pain when nighttime falls upon the dream of life during a writer's Winter's Rain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Carnegie Medal for Excellence Finalist for the Young Lions Fiction Award A Chinese American assassin sets out to rescue his kidnapped wife and exact revenge on her abductors in this New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice: a twist on the classic western from "an astonishing new voice" (Jonathan Lethem). Orphaned young, Ming Tsu, the son of Chinese immigrants, is raised by the notorious leader of a California crime syndicate, who trains him to be his deadly enforcer. But when Ming falls in love with Ada, the daughter of a powerful railroad magnate, and the two elope, he seizes the opportunity to escape to a different life. Soon after, in a violent raid, the tycoon's henchmen kidnap Ada and conscript Ming into service for the Central Pacific Railroad. Battered, heartbroken, and yet defiant, Ming partners with a blind clairvoyant known only as the prophet. Together the two set out to rescue his wife and to exact revenge on the men who destroyed Ming, aided by a troupe of magic-show performers, some with supernatural powers, whom they meet on the journey. Ming blazes his way across the West, settling old scores with a single-minded devotion that culminates in an explosive and unexpected finale. Written with the violent ardor of Cormac McCarthy and the otherworldly inventiveness of Ted Chiang, The Thousand Crimes of Ming Tsu is at once a thriller, a romance, and a story of one man's quest for redemption in the face of a distinctly American brutality. "In Tom Lin's novel, the atmosphere of Cormac McCarthy's West, or that of the Coen Brothers' True Grit, gives way to the phantasmagorical shades of Ray Bradbury, Charles Finney's The Circus of Dr. Lao, and Katherine Dunn's Geek Love. Yet The Thousand Crimes of Ming Tsu has a velocity and perspective all its own, and is a fierce new version of the Westward Dream." —Jonathan Lethem, author of Motherless Brooklyn
