Book Synopsis Paleogeodynamics by : Lev P. Zonenshain
Download or read book Paleogeodynamics written by Lev P. Zonenshain and published by American Geophysical Union. This book was released on 1997-01-23 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Special Publications Series. This volume presents the English language translation of L.P. Zonenshain and M.I. Kuzmin's classic text Paleogeodynamics, first published in Russian in 1992. The study of paleogeodynamics, or plate tectonics, has had an incredible impact on geological research in the former Soviet Union. The authors of this text were among the first to systematically study and utilize the plate tectonic model in the Soviet Union. Within this book the entire sweep of plate tectonic observation, interpretation and example are presented, including detailed descriptions and analysis related to oceanic ridge structures, geochemistry, plate tectonic processes, seismology, tectonostratigraphy terranes, paleoclimatology, paleomagnetism, reconstruction of past plate motions and global Earth history models. Because Zonenshain and his colleagues at the Shirshov Institute of Oceanography pioneered the quantitatively precise mathematical analysis of past plate and terrane motions, one of the sections is highly mathematical, presenting for the first time their development of reconstruction techniques based upon spherical geometry. The extensive bibliography presents and combines both Russian and English language references. Also unique to this volume are numerous examples taken from the plate tectonic history of portions of the former Soviet Union and from data collected during Soviet oceanographic cruises.

Book Synopsis The Geology of Central Europe by : Tom McCann
Download or read book The Geology of Central Europe written by Tom McCann and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2008 with total page 806 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 1 focuses on the evolution of Central Europe from the Precambrian to the Permian, a dynamic period which traces the formation of Central Europe from a series of microcontinents that separated from Gondwana through to the creation of Pangaea. Separate summary chapters on the Cadomian, Caledonian and Variscan orogenic events as well as on Palaeozoic magmatism provide an overview of the tectonic and magmatic evolution of the region. These descriptions sometimes extend beyond the borders of Central Europe to take in the Scottish and Irish Caledonides as well as the Palaeozoic successions in the Baltic region.
Book Synopsis The Permian of Northern Pangea by : Peter A. Scholle
Download or read book The Permian of Northern Pangea written by Peter A. Scholle and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Permian was a remarkable time period. It represents the maximum stage of Pangean continental assembly, includes a major global climatic shift from glacial to nonglacial conditions (icehouse-greenhouse transition), and is ter minated by one of the most profound faunal/floral extinction events in the Earth's history. In addition, Permian oceans, although poorly understood, must have had some quite unique characteristics. Permian seas reached the most extreme values of carbon, sulfur, and strontium isotopic ratios ever achieved in Phanerozoic time, and the isotopic ratios of all three elements abruptly returned to more "normal" values at, or very close to, the Permo Triassic boundary. Finally, the Permian is marked by an abundance of important sedimentary mineral resources. It has large fossil fuel concentra tions (coal, oil, and natural gas), enormous phosphate reserves, and very extensive evaporite deposits, including gypsum, anhydrite, and halite, as well as a variety of potash salts. Study of the Permian has been hampered, however, by a number of factors. These include a scattered geologic literature (presented in a variety of languages), a confusing regional and global stratigraphic framework (based, in part, on inadequate type sections), and largely provincial, often poorly correlatable faunas. All have contributed to the sparsity and inadequacy of overviews of this critical geological interval. The two volumes attempts to bring together some of the widely scattered observations about these fascinating rocks, at least for the northern (pre dominantly nonglacial) parts of Pangea.
Download or read book Tectonics written by Eldridge M. Moores and published by Waveland Press. This book was released on 2014-07-23 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deformation of the Earth’s crust happens at a multitude of scales, ranging from submicroscopic to planetary. Tectonics explores structures and processes from regional to global, differentiating itself from the material covered in most structural geology textbooks. Moores and Twiss emphasize basic principles and methodologies of tectonics, embracing the time-honored perspective of using present processes to understand the past. Comprehensive in scope and detail, coverage includes the effects of plate motions and reconstructions and the resultant structures associated with active rift, transform, and subduction boundaries as well as triple junctions and collision zones; deformations of both the ocean basins and the continents; and orogenic belts. Moores and Twiss present tectonics as an open-ended field of study in which assumptions can be challenged and interpretations changed. The authors emphasize the use of models as a means of understanding observations and putting them in context to maintain a distinction between what we know from observing the Earth and what we infer from interpretation.
Book Synopsis Tectonic Evolution of the Moroccan High Atlas: A Paleomagnetic Perspective by : Pablo Calvín
Download or read book Tectonic Evolution of the Moroccan High Atlas: A Paleomagnetic Perspective written by Pablo Calvín and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-29 with total page 666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a significant amount of structural, paleomagnetic and magnetic fabric data in the Central High Atlas (Morocco). The authors thoroughly described and analyzed the present-day structure of this intraplate chain through 22 of cross-sections, potential field data analysis and 3D reconstruction. In addition, the authors propose a palinspastic reconstruction of the structure of the basin at 100 Ma (i.e., post-extension and pre-compression) to finally evaluate its Mesozoic and Cenozoic geodynamic evolution. This books presents (1) a unique three-dimensional model at the chain scale, (2) an analysis of the ca. 100 Ma remagnetization, to perform palinspastic restorations of most representative structures, (3) as well as the interpretation of the magnetic fabrics in order to unravel the tectonic or deformation setting that the rocks underwent in different parts of the basin. This book is of interest to structural geologists in Northern Africa, the Mediterranean and Iberia, as well as to those interested in inverted intraplate basins and paleomagnetists from around the planet. Also, this book is intended to help students to understand better the geological evolution of the Atlas and therefore Morocco and surrounding areas.
