Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It became clear in the early days of fusion research that the effects of the containment vessel (erosion of "impurities") degrade the overall fusion plasma performance. Progress in controlled nuclear fusion research over the last decade has led to magnetically confined plasmas that, in turn, are sufficiently powerful to damage the vessel structures over its lifetime. This book reviews current understanding and concepts to deal with this remaining critical design issue for fusion reactors. It reviews both progress and open questions, largely in terms of available and sought-after plasma-surface interaction data and atomic/molecular data related to these "plasma edge" issues.

Book excerpt: The physics of impurity transport in response to a local gas injection in the scrape-off-layer (SOL) of Alcator C-Mod is investigated. Carbon "plumes'' are formed at variable locations in the SOL -- up to the separatrix -- by puffing deuterated ethylene gas (C2D4) through the end of a reciprocating fast-scanning probe. CCD cameras are used to simultaneously record C+1 and C+2 emission patterns from two near-perpendicular views. The plume dispersal patterns are found to yield direct qualitative information about plasma flow, including the direction of VExB near the separatrix. Impurity transport and plasma-surface interaction physics implicit in the 3-D plume structure is explored in detail using a Monte Carlo impurity transport code, with the aim of extracting background plasma-flow quantities. A number of important local effects involving plasma-probe interaction have been identified: a vertical ExB drift near the probe surface, a parallel electric field above the probe tip arising from plasma recycling off the probe surface, and sputtering of a carbon layer that dynamically forms on the probe surface. The emission patterns are also found to yield important information on flows in the SOL: radial electric field (Er) in the near SOL and volume-averaged values of the parallel Mach number in the far SOL. Er values obtained from plume data compare favorably with estimates of Er based on the poloidal propagation velocity of edge plasma fluctuations measured by the scanning probe. Comparisons between parallel Mach numbers obtained from the plume data and probe measurements indicate that the probe over-estimates the parallel flow towards the divertor in the far SOL. This result supports the picture of particle balance in the SOL of Alcator C-Mod being dominated by main-chamber recycling, with weak plasma flow into the divertor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Usually when sufficient heating power is injected, tokamak plasma will make an abrupt transition into a state with improved confinement, known as the high-confinement mode, or H-mode. Given the greatly enhanced fusion yield, H-mode is foreseen as the baseline scenario for the future plasma operation of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER). Many research efforts have been given to understand the criteria for H-mode access. To further contribute to this research, a primary focus of this thesis is characterizing the H-mode access conditions in the Alcator C-Mod tokamak, across a broad range of plasma density, magnetic field, and plasma current. In addition, dedicated experiments were designed and executed on C-Mod, to explore the effects of divertor geometry, ICRF resonance location, and main ion species on H-mode access conditions. Results from these experiments will be included in this thesis. The underlying physics of H-mode access is very complex, and the critical mechanisms remain largely unresolved. To promote our understanding, some models proposed for the H-mode transition are tested, using well documented local plasma conditions, obtained in C-Mod experiments. In particular, this thesis pioneers the test of a recently developed model for H-mode threshold power predictions.

Book excerpt: The importance of tokamaks and their role in fusion reactors has been known for some time, but it is only now that plasma physicists have reached a clear understanding of the major principles governing the behaviour of confined high-temperature plasma. This book gives a timely and comprehensive survey of these concepts as well as a simple presentation of the basic physics involved. The topics discussed include: the theory of plasma equilibrium and its main instabilities, semi-empirical approaches for investigating heat transport, major plasma instabilities restricting the region of a tokamak's operating modes, a variety of plasma confinement regimes and other phenomena such as MARFE, magnetic bubbles and fishbones. The author proposes a new mechanism for anomalous heat transport connected with the idea of microscale 'island' structure. The information is presented in a clear and systematic way which will make this book interesting and useful to a broad spectrum of scientists and engineers involved in fusion reactor research. '...an excellent book - authoritative, broad and bristling with insight' Professor R D Hazeltine, The University of Texas at Austin.
